Cubs @ Dodgers: Hammel vs Urias (Game 128)

The Cubs clinch a winning roadtrip and a winning season, and Bryant might have just clinched his first MVP crown.CHC (82-45): RHP Jason Hammel (13-6, 3.07)
LAD (72-57): LHP Julio Urias (4-2, 3.95)
First pitch: 3:05pmCST

Hammel was sliced, deep-fried, and salted in Colorado on Sunday (3.1 IP, 6 ER, 2 K, 2 BB), and four Cub errors lead to another 4 runs. Hammel pitched two innings against the Dodgers in May but left due to cramping in his right hamstring. The Cubs went on to win 2-0, and Hammel didn’t miss any time. The Dodgers are 32-123 (.260) against him. Kendrick is 7-16.

Urias has won his last three starts, including his last one, 6 shutout innings in Cincinnati, where he struck out 6 and walked none. He’s 3-0 with a 2.16 in his four starts this month. At Dodger Stadium, he’s 2-0 with a 3.24. He gave up 5 ER in as many innings in a start at Wrigley in June. The Cubs are 8-20 (.400) against him. Baez is 2-2 with a HR. (Love that kid.)

Lester versus whomever the Dodgers acquire between now and then tomorrow at 3:10pmCST to end the roadtrip.

Go Cubs!

Comments

Russell and Soler can attest that Urias has a pretty good curve/slider - two big strikeouts looking to get out of that jam in the first.

joe got a pitcher up for hammel at nearly the 1st sign of trouble in the 3rd...pulled after 2.1 not injured and though it wasn't his day so far he wasn't looking like a pure disaster. really short leash on him. zastryznzryzryny in.

Maddon would have started three lefties against the Dodgers, Montgomery, Zastryzny and Lester, except that he doesn't have the juice to do that. No manager does. Maddon has a boss, Epstein (and probably Hoyer, too), who gave him a starting rotation of five guys including Hammel. Maddon was asked yesterday about the starting group for next year and basically said, Not my call, that's why I drive away in my RV in the summer and occasionally check in, etc.

zastyryzryzryzny put in 3.2ip 1h 0bb 3k he's great when his control is "on"...problem is it's rarely "on" consistently. he could vault up the cubs prospect list if he ever gets better with that aspect of his game.

#Cubs plummet to 19-5 in August.

Fun with FIP

  • J. Hammel   3.07 ERA/4.27 FIP (3.68 FIP last year)
  • J. Arrieta     2.62 ERA/3.05 FIP (2.35 FIP last year)
  • J. Lester     2.81 ERA/3.67 FIP (2.92 FIP last year)
  • K. Hendricks  2.19 ERA/3.37 FIP (3.36 FIP last year)
  • J. Lackey     3.41 ERA/3.72 FIP (3.57 FIP last year with Cards)

great defense

Heyward, Russell, Baez, Bryant, Ross in particular...although Bryant's a bit hard to judge with all the positions.

Fowler and Rizzo in the top half of the NL for their positions as well (per fangraphs)...Zobrist right at the halfway cutoff for 2b in the NL.

I'm sure some luck is involved too, but the Cubs and Maddon knew what they were doing.

Hammel not particularly understanding of getting pulled out...as he should. Be curious what Maddon had to say. All I can think of is is keeping arms fresh and maybe wanting to see if Zastr? is worth considering for the playoffs and how he'd do against the Dodgers.

Ultimately it did work out for Cubs, so hard to fault him and doubtful Hammel is going to start a playoff game unless someone gets hurt or Lackey or Hendricks falls apart down the stretch.

from Muskat:

#Cubs Maddon: "I'm not going to make up an excuse for why I did what I did. It has nothing to do with lack of confidence" ... "It was the right thing to do today based on what I saw, what their lineup looked like and Rob Z.'s availability." #Cubs

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.
