Brewers @ Cubs: Nelson vs Montgomery (Game 146)

Brewers 5, Cubs 4
W: Nelson (8-14); L: Grimm (1-1); S: Thornburg (10)
PREVIEW
MIL (65-81): RHP Jimmy Nelson (7-14, 4.42)
CHC (93-52): LHP Mike Montgomery (4-5, 2.74)
First pitch: 7:05pmCST

Montgomery gave up a solo HR to Nieuwenhuis in 5 innings but ended up with a no-decision against the Brewers last Wednesday. It’ll be interesting to see how he fares seeing them again so quickly. Overall, they are 7-31 (.226) against him. Nieuwenhuis is 1-2 with that HR.

Nelson lost to the Cardinals his last time out, giving up 4 ER in 6 innings. He’s 0-3 with a 3.57 in his three starts against the Cubs this season. Overall, they are 41-163 (.252) against him. Soler is 7-20 with a HR.

Anderson (8-11, 4.53) versus Lackey (9-8, 3.35) at 1:20pmCST tomorrow afternoon.

Go Cubs!

By the way...the Cubs clinched a playoff spot last night! The pure math doesn't get you there (what?), but, since the Cards and SF play each other -- If the Cards lose one game, Cubs clinch the division. If the Cards don't lose, that means SF loses 4, and the Cubs clinch a WC spot.

So what's everyone's plans to celebrate the division clinching? I know the world series is the big goal but this has still been the most fun regular season in my lifetime.

There's a cool little cocktail bar that opened up a block from my house. They're not a sports bar, but they do broadcast Cubs games I'm told, and I'm sure it'll be playing there. The question is, can I nurse Manhattans there for the length of a baseball game without passing out?

It seems we clinched the division about a month ago to be honest. Sadly, the magic numbers have been barely registering with me. This team is a ton of fun but if they get wiped out in the division series, I'll be crushed. I could survive an LCS loss I feel like at least it felt like we were a part of the playoffs, but to be this dominant and have it wiped out in 3-5 games would be a kick in the balls.

On a sidenote, I (continue to) hate the 5-game division series.

I guess with the crapshoot the playoffs are I just want to enjoy every moment I can in case something bad happens. I really want the playoffs to get here but I also don't want this to be over. Seeing excellent baseball play all around hasn't happened for a long time.

The only disappointing thing about the great 2015 season was that this team did as well as you can do - 97 wins, Wild Card win, NLDS win - without getting any flags out of the deal. 2016 - different story. Expectations are completely raised. But it's at least great to start the push run with a flag.

I suppose this is pessimistic, but I've been looking at it for awhile this way. Cubs are 0-0. Elimination number is 3, Clinch number is 11. Those are the only numbers that have mattered for the last 2 months. A World Series win would be amazing...but I'll be happy with only breaking a 71 year trend and just getting there. Anything short of that will feel sickening.

I'm already a bit drunk, I have a shit-ton to do before 8am classes tomorrow, and I haven't been around most of the summer because blah blah blah life sucks, but:

Parachat Recap and Game Summary are In Effect.

@dschoenfield Jorge Soler since returning from injury Aug. 5: .287/.370/.575, 7 HR in 87 AB.

"That's baseball"....two things have been very reliable for the past month -- Russell's defense and Grimm's pitching. Both were bad tonight. Man, I hope they bat Zobrist 1st or 2nd next year -- good OBP, but he doesn't hit or drive in runs, despite hitting behind 3 guys with very high OBPs. Only 67 RBI and only 20 since the AS break. Pretty awful, really.

KB is really in a bit of a funk -- missing a lot of very hittable pitches. Hitting .196 in September after an awesome August, which I guess is how things go. Let's get this out of the way now, and get to 40/100. Don't want another 99 RBI on his stats page.

No. They traded them because they were giving up on the season and since the trade have been doing awesome. So they got prospects, saved $$$ and a bonus playoff run.

Also....

@Ken_Rosenthal Per @MLBNetwork research: Chapman, Miller since leaving #Yankees: 1.83 ERA, 39.1 IP. Clippard, Warren since joining NYY: 1.82 ERA, 39.2 IP.

Before tonight Yanks had the best bullpen in the AL since the ASB and had moved within 2 games of the playoffs. Shit happens and the Red Sox have a great offense.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be savored...unedited. 40 years, wow.
