Arrieta was back to his old self, with 7 strong innings of scoreless baseball to beat the Cardinals on Friday. He struck out 10 and walked one. In his five starts against the Pirates this year, he’s 3-1 with a 3.78. Overall, they are 48-224 (.214) against him. Joyce is 7-20 with a HR.

Taillon gave up 3 ER in 5 innings and came away with a no-decision against the Nationals his last time out. He gave up 4 ER in as many innings to lose against the Cubs at Wrigley in June. They are 8-17 (.471) against the rookie. Rizzo and Baez are both 2-2 with a HR.

Zastryzyny (1-0, 1.46) and the bullpen versus Nova (12-8, 4.37) tomorrow at 6:05pmCST to close out the series.

Arrieta’s 2.85 ERA would be good enough to lead 26 other teams. He's 3rd on #Cubs behind Hendricks (1.99) and Lester (2.28)

Now we're all Theo-believers, where were you when he signed Edwin Jackson? Or how about trading away DJ Lemehaiu? And not signing Samardzija to an extension? Or not pursuing Prince Fielder or Albert Pujols? Or signing Lester? Or trading away Cashner, Dempster, Feldman, etc?...I think I'm losing the narrative here.

So his deal runs through 2021? Which pretty much coincides when all these guys are due to hit free agency.

I was right here. I don't require my GM's to be perfect, but I would like them to understand what wins baseball games (IMO controlling the strike zone and creating/avoiding outs), and knowing where the organization is in the success cycle. Theo and company have made and will make plenty of mistakes, but they seem to understand those two items pretty well.

same...i just happen to not like sitting through shit sandwich meals for multiple years. baseball is kinda boring when you're punting on 1st down for a slew of years in a row. i fully understand why it was done, but i didn't enjoy it. there was more than one way to get competitive and this was the chosen way.

Glove-gate? bottom 4th, Rizzo-Zobrist and I don't get it. Is it 3-4 or 3-4 putout. Rizzo gets 2nd base qualification in fantasy leagues?

a.rizzo now playing 2nd in a lineup position switch because c.hurdle bitched about rizzo changing gloves and slotting to 2nd on an anticipated bunt play. now he's got a PO playing as a 2nd baseman. neat.

have a nice bowl of pizza soup deep dish pizza...or a leisurely walk around the notorious south-side (bring money)...shopping at one of the walmart supercenters...waiting in line to waste $20 at willis tower... seriously, though...it's chicago, a lot to do. have a dog for lunch, a great dinner, and catch some local comedy.

Despite a somewhat slumping September for Bryant (233/310/411), he still leads the NL in WAR by a healthy margin in both fWAR(8.4 vs 7.6 for Seager) and bWAR  (7.6 to 6.5 for Freeman...Seager is tied for 3rd with Arenado at 6.2)

If you just want to look at offense, Bryant is 4th in the NL in wRC+ behind Votto, Murphy and Freeman with Rizzo in 5th (and possibly ahead after tonight).

When he left Boston after nine years as general manager, Epstein said he believed in the philosophy espoused by legendary football coach Bill Walsh: essentially that 10 years is a natural shelf life for a high-stress job.

“That certainly seemed like the right amount of time [in Boston],” said Epstein, whose teams won two World Series there. “And I do really believe in a lot of what Walsh was writing about. But it’s too early to judge. We’ll see how I feel at that point, but certainly there’s some symmetry in 10 years. It’s just too early. So many things can happen between now and then.

coghlan out...got his cleats stuck in the wall attempting a play (failed, but looked great doing it). walking off on his own, precautionary/day-to-day looking stuff...hopefully not worse. also, jake arrieta is literally worse than hitler. 1-5, bottom 5. ...make that 1-6, bottom 5. ...make that 1-7, bottom 5.

Gameday has stopped at the top of the 8th inning. Google tells me it ended up 8-4 Pirates but I can't get further detail. Guess I'll have to wait until the Cubs' website updates...

that's not important. the important thing is the cubs seem to have a new defensive whizz at 2nd base according to the stats...sample size warning and all that...but i have faith in him. imagine him having to do this 20 times a season. 6.2 innings played, 20 assists, DEFENSE GOLD!

    I think it’s a bit of a chicken or egg scenario. Did they make these trades because they saw what was coming and weren’t impressed and knew to keep up with the demand for constant winning thru had to acquire impact players? Or did those additions cause a failure of resource allocation elsewhere.

    In addition, the whole they traded to acquire a star, that’s precisely what organizations should do if they feel they’re a piece away. Keep developing talent, but sometimes you need to supplement that talent. It’s what the best run organizations do. Atlanta does it. Houston in their prime run did it. Nationals during their prime run did it. Of course dodgers did it. Boston and Philadelphia too. Hell, the Cubs did it when they won. There’s no team that has had sustained success that has solely relied on their own internal development. It just doesn’t happen. I wouldn’t fault St Louis for that. What I suspect happened is in that 2020 season, in an effort to save money, they cut budget from developing and scouting. Or maybe the wrong guys got poached by other orgs. Regardless, blaming the acquisition of two of the best players of their generation for peanuts, seems off base to me.

    I do agree that we’ve more or less come to the same conclusion, but our paths to that conclusion contain almost no crossover. I think we can also agree that seeing the cardinals struggle brings a warmth to our hearts.
