The Spoils

Most of the championship dust has settled by now. The White House? Been there, done that. New tats? See Javy B. All that remains for the team itself is presentation of the rings and that will happen in due course once the season is underway. We fans have our feet back on the ground, right, and are girding for defense of the long-sought crown.

As Opening Day approaches, I’m curious how we all sifted through the tsunami of championship fools’ gold that flooded the market after IT finally happened. What mementoes did you select to commemorate the once (so far) in all of our lifetimes season of 2016? What gifts did you receive in that spirit? Is your family pet now sporting World Champion Cubs gear? Will there be a new heirloom tree ornament supplanting the traditional angel atop your tannenbaum in Christmases to come? More practically, anybody got a set of Cub jumper cables?

A friend gave me a collector set of 2016 Cub baseball cards that I already re-gifted into a silent auction fundraiser. I kept the Titleist 16 Cub logo golf ball that came along with them to putt with in the lone four-man scramble event I play in every season. Never lost a ball yet on the green.

The only thing I spent any of my own money on was truly rare and worthy of the occasion. I made sure to get myself one of the Tim (Cubby Blue) Souers limited edition “The Last Out” prints. I expect someday our two sons will fight over that. Damned if I’m going to explicitly bequeath it to either of them. If we repeat maybe Tim can come up with something comparable inspired by the encore.

In the meantime, can I really get along without a Cub potluck tote, floor mats or cutting board?

Decisions, decisions…

I have my Cubs cap with World Series Champs logo on side, the winter parade hat and 6 drinking glasses that I was gifted. I'm happy.

Several years ago I got a nice framed picture of the Cubs team photo from 1908 from Mom at Christmas. This year she surprised me with a matching 2016 framed Cubs team photo. Being in my 40s, don't get that excited over Christmas presents; however, that one made me feel like a kid again.

e.butler put in 4ip 1h 0bb 4k (0 r/er) vs a legit LAD lineup. the cubs put up a total bench + minors lineup...i hope everyone else is enjoying their golf game this afternoon.

I'm still trying to sort out everything that happened in just Game 7: - Cubs up 5-1; then 2 runs score on a wild pitch? - Ross HR off of Andrew Miller? - Chapman gives up a HR to a guy who hit 12 all year...then, with nothing left, somehow survives the 9th? - Heyward reaches 3rd with one out in the 9th, and Joe has Javy squeeze bunt with 2 strikes? - The rain delay? - Schwarber (!!) starts the winning rally? Schwarber playing at all? - CJ gets 2 out, nobody on, 2-run lead...and the Indians bring the winning run to the plate? - KB's foot slipping on that final throw? My heart is racing just typing this. But, for me, the most lasting impression of the whole 2016 magical season was the look on Rizzo's face after Zobrist's go-ahead double in the tenth. Just pure, joyful disbelief. As someone else here has said...like a kid opening the perfect Christmas present he never thought he would get. Based on several Patriots fans I know -- winning doesn't get old, but there is nothing like the first one. I am curious to see how I feel this season. Will I still be paranoid that the Cardinals will somehow ruin everything? Will I still ride the same roller-coaster each game? I don't know, but am looking forward to it.

Eager for baseball per usual, but no way it'll ever be the same again - The Great Weight has been lifted & The Great Wait is over. Plus, if America keeps getting Great again @ current rate it may not last the season.

My wife and I got a bottle of wine with a "Cubs" logo on it for Christmas. I have no idea what kind it is or how it tastes. I'm sure the team had something to do with the production of it...

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.

he's hugging canario in the dugout cuz morel will shrivel up and die if he doesn't hug at least a dozen people a day.

  • crunch (view)

    and morel is injured...nice.

morel trying to play LF from 3rd...runs into canario while leaping and comes down ribs/arm-first.

hopefully he sticks around to finish this terrible game, or at least is going to avoid the IL.

    Amen to that last point!
