Cease Fires Blanks at Greenjackets

Cubs top pitching prospect Dylan Cease tossed 3-1/3 innings of two-hit shutout ball (while issuing one walk and striking out six), Marcus Mastrobuoni (RBI double), Roberto Caro (RBI triple), and Luis Ayala (RBI single) contributed run-scoring hits in a three-run 5th as the Cubs took a 3-0 lead, and then after the Greenjackets replied with one run in the 5th, one in the 7th, and three more in the 8th to take a 5-3 lead, Jhonny Pereda slugged a two-run home run over the LF fence in the top of the 9th to tie the game, as the South Bend Cubs (Lo-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs) and the Augusta Greenjackets (Lo-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants) played to a 5-5 tie on Field #2, and LHP Conner Menez hurled four innings of no-run no-hit ball and combined with four relievers to spin a four-hitter and Jalen Miller drilled an RBI triple and a double and scored two runs, leading the San Jose Giants (Hi-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants) to a 7-2 victory over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Cubs Hi-A affiliate) on Field #1, in Cactus League Minor League doubleheader action Thursday morning at Indian School Park in Scottsdale, AZ.

Michael Cruz broke-up the San Jose no-hitter with a one-out line-drive single to right in the top of the 5th, and Connor Myers belted an opposite-field solo HR to put Myrtle Beach on the board in the top of the 6th, but otherwise the Pelicans didn't produce much offense.

b.anderson is going to be the #4 starter...hendricks #5. maddon didn't want anderson/lester going back to back.

l.lynn removed from the cards game for "precautionary reasons" they later returned to tell the TV crew the exact same thing, only he would still be in the game if it was the regular season. they haven't let on what body part they're concerned about. fwiw, he was throwing 87-88mph when he left the game in the 1st. he was either not getting it going or he's injured. we'll find out. also, his replacement (gant) left the game in the 1st with a leg injury. classiest injuries in baseball.

heyward playing CF again in the COL split squad game. also, schwarber caught 4 innings of a minor league game yesterday.

heyward playing the "b-team" non-televised split squad game again. j.jay joins him as the other probable regular in the lineup.

rizzo takes the 1st pitch by the reds (t.adleman) out of the park to somewhere near flagstaff. damn.

almora HR, too. e.butler (yes, the pitcher) knocks in a run...this is getting ugly. 1 out, 29 pitches, 1bb, 2 singles, 3 doubles, 2HR, 6 runs in, and rizzo comes to the plate again. adleman kinda sucks. rizzo K, bryant popout...and his torture is over. baseball!

votto is getting into it with some fan(s) behind home plate who keeps calling balls/strikes and time while he's batting and the ball is being delivered. people that go to games to scream at players are a f'n headache. some people like them...i tend to not like being around those type of "some people."

Soler hitting .143 this spring, and is now dealing with the dread strained oblique.

Cubs going with the offense-first OF tonight with Happ, Almora and Schwarber starting from left to right field. Also, Kyle Hendricks sent back to Arizona after a reported case of food poisoning from a Taco Bell. Yeah right -- that's the ONE guy on the roster you can't trust to stay out of trouble while in Vegas!

The great thing about going to live sports events is you don't know if you're going to see something historic. Today I went to the Cub game, after putting the liner back in my coat and fishing my Cubs knit hat out of the closet. I needed all that- my seats are in the upper deck, left, so the east wind was in my face. Both teams failed to capitalize on good situations, but both starters did a good job to accomplish this. So, we go to the bottom of the sixth inning. The Cubs tie it up, and then Pete Crow-Armstrong comes up. We all know he would still be in AAA if not for injuries, and future Hall-of-Famer Justin Verlander absolutely carved up the young fellow up in his first two plate appearances. So this time he hits a fly ball. The wind was blowing in and had suppressed several strong fly balls- including a rocket off Altuve's bat that Canario hauled in (does anybody else remind me of Jorge Soler?) , but the ball kept carrying and carrying. 107mph, legit angle and carry. The crowd went nuts, the dugout went nuts. Maybe, just maybe, I saw the first homer from a long-term Cub.

Which was my original premise. They won the trades but lost their souls. They no longer employ the Cardinal way which had been so successful for so long.

STL traded away a lot of minor league talent that went on to do nothing in the arenado + goldschmidt trades.  neither guy blocked any of their minor league talent in the pipeline, too.  that's ideal places to add talent.

Natural cycle of baseball. Pitching makes adjustments in approach to counter a hot young rookie. Now it’s time for Busch and his coaches to counter those adjustments. Busch is very good and will figure it out, I think sooner than later.

In 2020, the pandemic year and the year before they acquired Arenado, the Cardinals finished second and were a playoff team. Of the 12 batters with 100 plate appearances, 8 of them were home grown. Every member of the starting rotation (if you include Wainwright) and all but one of the significant relievers were home grown. While there have been a relative handful of very good trades interspersed which have been mentioned, player development had been their predominant pattern for decades - ever since I became an aware fan in the ‘70’s

The Arenado deal was not a deal made out of dire need or desperation. It was a splashy, headline making deal for a perennial playoff team intended to be the one piece that brought the Cardinals from a very good team to a World Series contender. They have continued to wheel and deal and have been in a slide ever since. I stand by my supposition that that deal marked a notable turning point within the organization. They broke what had been a very successful formula for a very long time.

busch is having a really intense k-filled mini slump.  he deserves better after coming back to wrigley after that hot road trip.

i know alzolay isn't having a great time right now, but i trust hector "ball 4" neris even less than alzolay based on what i've seen coming out of their arms.

  • azbobbop (view)

Neris reminds me of Don “Full Pack” Stanhouse.

Happ, Busch, Dansby and Madrigal have a combined 25 runners left on base through 7 innings, with Busch accounting for 9 of those.  Seems like a lot.
