Rockies Pitchers Fan 14 Cubs at Salt River Fields

Javier Guevara ripped two RBI doubles and five pitchers combined to hurl a five-hitter with 14 strikeouts, leading the Rockies to a 6-3 victory over the Cubs in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Wednesday morning on Dust Storm Field at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick Resort east of Scottsdale, AZ.

Fidel Mejia laced an RBI double and a single and Mark Malave and David Garner tossed a combined four innings of no run/no hit ball in relief for the Cubs.

The game was pre-planned as an eight-inning contest, but it was extended an extra half-inning so that all of the Rockies pitchers who were scheduled to throw in the game could get their work.

RHRP Juan Carlos Paniagua had been on the list of pitchers scheduled to work in the game for the Cubs, but he was scratched after being moved-up to AAA Iowa.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

PHIL: In your opinion, what does Bryan Hudson need in order to become a TOR or #2 starter for the Cubs? Does he have any health issues? How does he work with runners on?

In reply to by The E-Man

E-MAN: I don't know what the issue was, but when Bryan Hudson reported to Minor League Camp in March he was immediately placed into the Rehab Throwing Program, and he did not pitch in any Minor League Spring Training games. But he looks just fine now.

The problem Hudson had last season was at the very end of Extended Spring Training when his delivery got out of whack, he started to labor on the mound, couldn't throw strikes, and couldn't get out of innings. That carried over into the Northwest League at Eugene. Hopefully what happened last year won't happen again.

I suspect the Cubs will probably have Hudson make at least one more start at Extended Spring Training, but he is a good bet to get moved-up to South Bend sooner rather than later, quite possibly by the end of the month.

Dealin' Cease tonight: 6IP, 0H, 3BB, 7K. ERA stands at 0.60. For the young season: 15IP, 22K, 8BB. Getting there...

There's quite a crowd around second base already but this David Bote can hit. He broke out (.928 OPS) at Myrtle Beach last season and he's hot (.852) so far at Tennessee.

I saw Bote several times in Kane County back in 2013 and 2014. He struck me as a typical light-hitting middle infielder. He was being used in more of a part-time utility role which, if you're in the minor leagues, is not exactly a fast track to the majors. Seemed more like minor league filler. Then suddenly, last year -- BOOM!

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be savored...unedited. 40 years, wow.
