Brito Knows Thyself Can Hit

Socrates Brito (on Diamondbacks MLB 60-day DL - March 2017 dislocated finger) belted an RBI triple, an RBI double, and a single and RHSP Emilio Vargas retired the first ten men he faced and fired four innings of shutout ball for the Diamondbacks, and RHSP Tyler Peyton tossed three innings of shutout ball and Rafael Narea and Fidel Mejia collected two hits a piece for the Cubs, as the D'backs edged the Cubs 6-5 on Field #5 and the two teams played to a 2-2 tie on Field #6, in Cactus Extended Spring Training doubleheader action Monday morning at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

Both games were extended an extra half inning so that all of the Diamondbacks pitchers who were scheduled to pitch in the games could get their work. (The game on Field #6 was called with two outs in the bottom of the 8th after the Cubs tied the game).

In EXST Cubs roster news, IF-OF Jemile Weeks (February 2017 sprained knee) has completed his EXST rehab, has been reinstated from the AAA Iowa 7-day DL, and has rejoined the I-Cubs.

mid-may...leadoff hitter without much speed hitting .179 with a .313 ob% a'ite then. the real tragedy is that he's been on base (not counting his 5 HR) 45 times and has only been knocked in 11 times. everyone wake the hell up and start doing some hitting. the more most realerest tragedy is he's not got much competition from regulars for being a leadoff hitter aside from heyward and zobrist and they're not strong competition. also, jason heyward still hasn't hit a double this season.

Definitely looking forward to seeing the lineup posted today. Lots of possibilities in play, particularly with respect to whether Zobrist and Heyward can go or not. If Zobrist is available would not be surprised to see him leading off (perhaps Happ 2nd and KB 3rd - Schwarber maybe sixth?). Agree with comment from yesterday that Happ would be useful at leadoff but don't see the Cubs putting that weight on him so soon.

j.weeks went 1-4 (single) and played 2nd last night. rob zyzryzrsrysrysytny continued his downward fall and lasted .1 of an inning throwing 30 pitches and exiting with the bases loaded and an injury. sigh. d.rollins continued his downward fall, himself, giving up 3er. he has given up 15er in his last 3 outings going from a 0.75 ERA to a 9.39 ERA. ow.

I see three players in the minors who seem to have really progressed this Spring. Carlos Penalver SS Daniel Spingola OF Daury Torrez RP Do any of them have a chance Phil?

Az Phil, I'm thinking if Lackey and Arrieta both stay average or worse, just screw it and give T.Clifton a shot this year. E.Butler is up for the rest of the year as for as I'm concerned. Let's just give Clifton a shot. He seems more apt to be ready than D.Underwood. Maybe Alec Mills, but I want guys with velo closer to 95. Clifton I believe has more velo than Mills. Velo with some movement is the key. There just aren't a lot of pitchers, lefty or righty, than can do what Hendricks did last yr. Lackey, Anderson and Arrieta are more than likely gone next year. I've read where Theo wants Z.Greinke. His numbers are better this year so far. I don't want to give up Happ. No way. Cannot give up E.Jimenez or Schwarbs either. Candy can go. I think Almora can go. He's good, but Happ is the better hitter. The guy I'm iffy on is Javy. I'm thinking he'll get traded, but I'm not sure. Javy, Candy, Almora and some others could get a decent SP. Maybe not Greinke or certainly not Archer, but a decent SP. What are your thoughts?

Wrong Phil, sorry-- but the Cubs don't have very interesting pitching in the high minors--their only electric arm is at South Bend--so if they intend to go "all in" again this year, they'll probably have to swap a top hitting prospect or two for something of equal value on the pitching side. Happ may have dodged that bullet by demonstrating that he can help the team win this year. After all, they could have traded Russell instead of Gleyber, but they wanted Addy to help them win the World Series, which he proceeded to do. Eloy, we hardly knew ya!

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

  • crunch (view)

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.

he's hugging canario in the dugout cuz morel will shrivel up and die if he doesn't hug at least a dozen people a day.

  • crunch (view)

    and morel is injured...nice.

morel trying to play LF from 3rd...runs into canario while leaping and comes down ribs/arm-first.

hopefully he sticks around to finish this terrible game, or at least is going to avoid the IL.

    Amen to that last point!
