A Mule on the Mound and a Rosario Bomb on the Berm at Sloan Park

Alfonsin Rosario crushed a towering solo HR high onto the LF berm (his second HR this week), singled, reached base on an HBP, and stole a base, and Anderson Suriel belted an RBI triple for the Cubs, and Jairo Pomares cracked a solo HR and a single, and Charlie Szykowny singled, doubled, walked, and scored two runs for the Giants, as the two teams played to a 5-5 tie in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Friday afternoon at Sloan Park in Mesa, AZ.

The game was called after seven innings of play.

Cubs SP Naz Mule (Cubs 2022 4th round draft pick - Passaic County Technical HS) saw his first game action as a pitcher since post-2022 AZ Instructs. He was drafted in 2022 as a "two-way player" (RHP / SS), but did not play or pitch in any games in 2023 after undergoing right elbow surgery in March. He did spend the latter part of last season (September / October) at AZ Instructs taking daily BP and fielding grounders at SS, as it appeared that he would henceforth be a shortstop (only), before rather surprisingly moving back to the mound (exclusively) at Spring Training 2024.

RHP Brody McCullough (post-2023 knee surgery) also saw his first game action of 2024, throwing two innings in relief.

Alfonsin Rosario probably should be included among the Cubs Top 30 prospects, I would say. It's not just the HR power, but he also has a plus-arm that's good enough for RF, the range to play CF, and the speed to steal bases and score from 1st on a double and from 2nd on a single. (Alfonsin's older brother Eguy is an infielder with the San Diego Padres, so he's got MLB bloodlines, too).

As I have mentioned here before, contrary to what you might read at Baseball Reference or at milb.com, Alfonsin Rosario is - NOT - 6'6 210. He is actually 6'0 220 (six inches shorter and ten pounds heavier than he is listed!), so he is more like Kirby Puckett than Dave Winfield.

TIM: Yes. I would think so. It's not like anybody is blocking him there.

So if PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, Canario, and C. Franklin are the Cubs top five outfield prospects (and all five are definitely in the Cubs Top 30), then Alfonsin Rosario is # 6 (ahead of B. Davis, Roederer, Pagan, and Pinango) and is in my Cubs Top 30 (if not in the Cubs Top 30 at BA, milb.com, et al).

W-RAT: I would say Alfonsin Rosario is a slightly better prospect than Rafael Morel (with Rosario just inside the Top 30 and R. Morel somewhere in the 30's). Rosario's power is substantial (Nelson Velazquez would be a good comp at a similar age), and he has the speed & range to play CF and the arm to play RF.

When I saw him at Minor League Camp last month, Rafael Morel was mainly playing outfield (CF-RF) in games, although he did get a few reps at 2B-3B-SS, too, especially in pre-game and Camp Day workouts. So R. Morel is MUCH more versatile than Rosario, and in fact I would project R. Morel as a bat-first multi-positional OF-INF when he gets to AA, which is kind of funny because that is exactly what the Cubs wanted Christopher Morel to be!

One thing I would say about Rafael, is that while he is a better defensive player and more athletic than his brother, he clearly doesn't have Christopher's plus-plus power or plus-plus arm strength.

I was at the Cubs - Dodgers game at Wrigley Field in May 1967, the last game before Ken Holtzman was to report for active duty and be gone for a long time. (He ended up getting leave occasionally on weekends so he could pitch for the Cubs). Cubs won 20-3. Knocked out Claude Osteen. Holtzman pitched a complete game. Randy Hundley hit a grand slam. Adolfo Phillips hit a HR and a double and drove in six runs. Even Glenn Beckett hit a HR! Ted Savage stole home (and it was a true "Jackie Robinson" steal of home, too, not the back end of a double steal). For me, it was one of the most memorable Cubs games of the 1960's.

I'll always remember his 3-0 No-hitter against the Braves when Aaron's HR was blown back into the LF well and BIlly Williams made the catch with his back against the ivy.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be savored...unedited. 40 years, wow.
