Game 44 Thread / Cubs @ Padres (2 of 3)

Game Chat Sean Marshall vs. David Wells

Comments

The - Riot on the bench tonight... Soriano, Pagan, DLee, ARam, Barrett, Orange Guy, Derosa, Izzy & Marshall vs. Giles, Cruz, Cameron, Gonzalez, Greene, Baird, Kouzmanoff, Sledge & Wells

In the last 2 weeks Theriot is hitting .254 with 6 runs scored, 3 RBIs, and 2 SBs. Let him sit.

Neil Cotts started and pitched the first 3 inings for the I-Cubs tonight. 1 hit, no runs, no walks and 2K's. Sounds good, but he problem wasn't getting out AAA hitters...

on the pregame radio interview with Santo, Lou said it was hard incorporating the three lefty's that were in the bullpen into action. translation: they all sucked so much it was tough to figure out which to demote, so the last guy to screw up got to go to Iowa.

DAVE: I heard Murton stole a base tonight??? Maybe he does have above average speed?

Murton doubled off 2nd on a bloop to RF...apparently, he's not speedy enough to make up for lousy baserunning.

That base was stolen on Wells. Murton was able to read the high leg kick. But that orange hair sure makes him look fast.

The guy's created 5 outs in 3 at-bats tonight! Perhaps his little mini-hit-streak was a deceptive illusion...PLEASE pinch-hit Riot for Marshall next inning and get Izzy out of there in case his spot comes around again in an important situation!

Ugh, why not pinch hit The Riot in that basesloaded situation. All Neifi, er, IzTurdis, does is slap at the ball. Outfield plays at coed softball girl depth for him. Booooooo.

i mean talk about that HR being fait accompli right on the heels of suckturis's awesome AB.

yes. "ARE piece of shortstop" Or - you can do the right thing and blame HENDRY for the "Gold Glover!"

Or - you can do the right thing and blame HENDRY for the “Gold Glover!” I thought Maddux approved that trade to "help" the Cubs...

Hey, it's Lou playing Izzy every day no matter what. I better hear that Theriot was hurt tonight.

I was following on Gameday and want to make sure: did Jacque Jones REALLY try to pull an outside pitch on 3-2 with the game on the line? Really? We're paying this guy actual money to put our jersey on? (The loss isn't necessarily his fault, but this is just another example of Jacque not knowing how to play the game right)

Also, when the game is on the line, you bring in someone like Ward who has proven he can PH vs Jones, who is in a major slump.

Hey CT Steve: Soriano 6/38, .158 avg Barrett 7/37, .189 avg DeRosa: 3/19, .158 avg It's not like this team has been tearing the cover off the ball the last 2 weeks.

Incredible moment. Huge part of the fun of working there is when something magic like that happens, and you get to interact with baseball fans.

That bear hug was indeed awesome. Word is that Dansby has become an outstanding clubhouse leader and that moment really demonstrated it. That reaction was one of a proud coach/mentor who’s student just excelled. I’m not even sure who was more overjoyed, Dansby or PCA. A veteran expressing that kind of unabashed support and enthusiasm for a struggling rookie is beyond fantastic to see.

BAHAHA! I've actually not seen a single fight, but can't wait to see 70 degrees for sure!

next time i roll up into wrigley i'll try to start a fist fight and maybe we'll meet.

be prepared.  i'm gonna make you earn your money.

seriously, though...that's a cool as hell "retirement" assignment.  i imagine it will be better with warmer nights.

I was there for the PCA homer as well. 50 degree baseball is no longer fun when sitting in the shade (knit hats, scarves and gloves are football gear) but I agree it’s one of those really cool moments. I loved the bear hug given by Swanson at home plate and of course the added impact that the PCA homer became a game winner.

In honor of dispatching with the Astros, this painting is titled “The Sweep”.
I retired a couple years ago, and took a job at Wrigley as a security guy. SO cool having Wrigley as your office. SO cool being there when PCA got his first hit.
“The Sweep” happens at the end of every game - the security staff sweeps through the ballpark making sure it’s empty.
(Hopefully I’ll be putting this painting up often this year.)
Lastly, because working for the Cubs, they understandably don’t want you voicing opinions on social, which is why I’m only painting the banners here.

Honorable mention to Jim Bullinger via BleedCubbieBlue:

Bullinger, a converted shortstop, had pitched in three games before he came to the plate. He had entered the game to relieve starter Shawn Boskie after four innings, and came to the plate to lead off the fifth, and hit Rheal Cormier's first pitch over the left-field wall to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead; they eventually won the game 5-2 in 14 innings. Of the 129players to homer in their first MLB at-bat, Bullinger is one of just 32 to hit that blast on the first big-league pitch he saw (including Contreras) and one of just six pitchers to do so.

Most of this activity will lead nowhere, of course, but it is fantastic that they’re looking for talent in every nook and cranny. You never know where that can lead, and virtually nothing is lost if if leads nowhere, as long as no one of superior talent and potential is losing an opportunity.
