Gameday Open Thread / Padres @ Cubs

St. Patrick's Day (Drink) and the Cubs and Padres break out the green caps (Drink). Rich Hill is on the mound for the Cubs (Drink) and has given up three early runs through the first inning and two-thirds (Drink). Maddux was supposed to start for the Padres (Drink) but was held back in favor of a minor league start and Tim Stauffer started (Drink) for the Padres and gave up an early three-run dinger to Derrek in the first (Drink).

(drink) enough green beer and AZ Phil's autographed Casey McGehee ball will be worth something... Orange guy in a green hat? If I didn't know how tall he was, I'd say we have a Leprechaun in LF today.

... crickets chirping ... ... crickets chirping ... ... crickets chirping ...

the way Cotts is going, Guzman will make the team as the long reliever/swingman if he doesn't get the 5 spot. Wish they had a gun at the game, but it looks like Cotts is throwing fastballs almost exclusively. I've seen one changeup I think.

Cotts might have shoulder capsular laxity too (aka a loose shoulder)...but when nobody cares we just get to blame it on the fact the guy sucks and leave the doctors out of it.

Theriot in RF is interesting. Has anyone seem him play out there? Could Lou be testing the idea of a JJ/Theriot platoon in RF?

I just saw my first Felix Pie at bat ever. Small sample size of course but he looks to have a decent swing.

"Theriot in RF is interesting. Has anyone seem him play out there? Could Lou be testing the idea of a JJ/Theriot platoon in RF?" think the team might be testing the "bye bye angel pagan" plan. platoon, no, but someone has to play RF and the team probably wants another SS/3rd backup before they add a 6th OF'r. just be glad bynum's gone...then again t.perez is the leader to backup right now...sigh 25th men.

well, not straight platoon...but well, ya know...whatever...

Q.......I saw Pie at Des Moines regularly last season. He has a pretty nice swing with lots of holes in it. Anxious to see if another year has improved his tools or if he just another permanent prospect.

Today's Cub performance was the type that sucks the optimism right out of your bones. phih! Seems that the Orioles have become so enamored with Jason Dubois they started him in right field today (after a previous start at first base). He responded with another XBH and 2 more RBI's. Hitting .407 Meanwhile, Corey Patterson hasn't been used much lately. hmmm

Corey Patterson played some in the other split game. Batting average is down to .179 Freddie Bynum is supposed to be in the fight of his life with DuBois for the 25th spot. He isn't hitting a lick though --- but he's "versatile". 0/1 today for .136 BA.

Rob G.: "the way Cotts is going, Guzman will make the team as the long reliever/swingman if he doesn’t get the 5 spot." That wouldn't bother me, Cotts has had one very outstanding year and everything else in his ML career was horrible. I expect absolutely nothing from him. But with him stumbling and its other problems, it only makes the bullpen more and more questionable.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be savored...unedited. 40 years, wow.
