Novoa Walks to Iowa, Cubs ST Roster Now at 35

A day after walking the bases loaded on 15 pitches, RHP Roberto Novoa was optioned to Iowa by the Cubs today. With today's roster move, the Cubs ST roster now stands at 35 (17 pitchers, three catchers, eight infielders, and seven outfielders). 32 of the remaining players are on the 40-man roster, and three are NRI. 2007 CHICAGO CUBS SPRING TRAINING ROSTER PITCHERS (16): Rocky Cherry Neal Cotts Ryan Dempster Scott Eyre Angel Guzman Rich Hill Bob Howry Ted Lilly Jason Marquis Juan Mateo Wade Miller Will Ohman Mark Prior Kerry Wood Michael Wuertz Carlos Zambrano NON-ROSTER PITCHERS (1): Les Walrond ========================================= CATCHERS (2): Michael Barrett Henry Blanco NON-ROSTER CATCHERS (1): Koyie Hill ==================================== INFIELDERS (7): Ronny Cedeno Mark DeRosa Cesar Izturis Derrek Lee Aramis Ramirez Ryan Theriot Daryle Ward NON-ROSTER INFIELDERS (1): Tomas Perez ================================= OUTFIELDERS (7): Buck Coats Cliff Floyd Jacque Jones Matt Murton Angel Pagan Felix Pie Alfonso Soriano NON-ROSTER OUTFIELDERS: NONE ===================================== MINOR LEAGUE OPTION STATUS (Spring Training 2007) * Player can be optioned to minors out of Spring Training 2007 only after clearing Major League Waivers ONE MINOR LEAGUE OPTION LEFT: Ronny Cedeno Angel Guzman (see NOTE 1) Rich Hill * Roberto Novoa (has beenn optioned to AAA) * Will Ohman (see NOTE 2) Geovany Soto (has been optioned to AAA) * Michael Wuertz NOTE 1: Because of time spent on the DL in 2004 and 2005, Guzman gets a 4th option year in 2007. A player receives a 4th option year if he has not spent five “full seasons” (a “full season” being a minimum of 60 days on a major league or a minor league active roster--NOT including time spent on the DL--from the start of a season, or a minimum of 90 days total on a minor league or major league active roster--NOT including time spent on the DL--in a given season) by the time his first three minor league options have been exhausted. NOTE 2: Ohman cannot be optioned to the minors without his consent once he accrues another 132 days of MLB service time. (Players cannot be optioned to the minors without their consent once they accrue five years of MLB service time). TWO MINOR LEAGUE OPTIONS LEFT: * Neal Cotts Brian Dopirak (has been optioned to AA) Carlos Marmol (has been optioned to AAA) Scott Moore (has been optioned to AAA) Angel Pagan Felix Pie * Mark Prior (see NOTE 3) Ryan Theriot NOTE 3: Prior cannot be optioned to the minors without his consent once he accrues another 41 days of MLB service time (that's when he will have accrued five full seasons of MLB service time). THREE MINOR LEAGUE OPTIONS LEFT: Rocky Cherry Buck Coats Sean Marshall (has been optioned to AAA) Juan Mateo Matt Murton Clay Rapada (has been optioned to AAA) FOUR MINOR LEAGUE OPTIONS LEFT: Jeff Samardzija (has been optioned to A+) In the case of players who have already been optioned to the minors (Soto, Marmol, Marshall, Moore, Novoa, Rapada, Dopirak, and Samardzija), their minor league option will only be exercised once the player has spent at least twenty days on optional assignment to the minors (clock starts ticking on MLB Opening Day), which would be as of April 21st (if the player is not recalled in the meantime). Also, players on optional assignment to the minors can be moved back and forth between the majors and minors as necesary throughout the season, limited only by having to remain in the minors at least ten days after being optioned, UNLESS the optioned player is being recalled to replace a player who has been placed on the DL.

Phil: Do you regret Hendry's deal for Cotts? I admit that when I originally heard Aardsma/Vasquez for Cotts, I thought we had a steal. Now I'm not too sure. I realize that Cotts provided some insurance as a potential 5th starter in addition to his bullpen role, but I am beginning to wonder if Aardsma won't have the greater impact in the long run. Thus, even if Vasquez never reaches the majors, Hendry will still have gotten the short end of the trade stick. Your thoughts?

I know you didnt ask Seamhead. But personally I think that middle relievers are basically interchangeable items. Even if Aardsma is a better pitcher, it won't have any long term effect on the team. Juan Mateo and Carlos Marmol would have likely pushed him out of a job next summer anyway. JMHO

Seamhead — March 22, 2007 @ 1:29 pm Phil: Do you regret Hendry’s deal for Cotts? I admit that when I originally heard Aardsma/Vasquez for Cotts, I thought we had a steal. Now I’m not too sure. Thus, even if Vasquez never reaches the majors, Hendry will still have gotten the short end of the trade stick. Your thoughts? ================================ SEAMHEAD: Not really, I think Hendry wanted to get a replacement for Glendon Rusch, somebody who could perform the role assigned to Rusch the last couple of years (a lefty swingman/spot starter/long reliever with MLB experience), and figured that Aardsma could be replaced by Rocky Cherry (which has indeed been the case). If I were Hendry, I would option Cotts to Iowa (he does have two options left, while Aardvark only had one) and have him work as a rotation starter for a year, and see what happens. Back before the White Sox made him a reliever, BA had Cotts rated as the Sox #3 prospect as a STARTING PITCHER.

I was there for the PCA homer as well. 50 degree baseball is no longer fun when sitting in the shade (knit hats, scarves and gloves are football gear) but I agree it’s one of those really cool moments. I loved the bear hug given by Swanson at home plate and of course the added impact that the PCA homer became a game winner.

In honor of dispatching with the Astros, this painting is titled “The Sweep”.
I retired a couple years ago, and took a job at Wrigley as a security guy. SO cool having Wrigley as your office. SO cool being there when PCA got his first hit.
“The Sweep” happens at the end of every game - the security staff sweeps through the ballpark making sure it’s empty.
(Hopefully I’ll be putting this painting up often this year.)
Lastly, because working for the Cubs, they understandably don’t want you voicing opinions on social, which is why I’m only painting the banners here.

Honorable mention to Jim Bullinger via BleedCubbieBlue:

Bullinger, a converted shortstop, had pitched in three games before he came to the plate. He had entered the game to relieve starter Shawn Boskie after four innings, and came to the plate to lead off the fifth, and hit Rheal Cormier's first pitch over the left-field wall to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead; they eventually won the game 5-2 in 14 innings. Of the 129players to homer in their first MLB at-bat, Bullinger is one of just 32 to hit that blast on the first big-league pitch he saw (including Contreras) and one of just six pitchers to do so.

Most of this activity will lead nowhere, of course, but it is fantastic that they’re looking for talent in every nook and cranny. You never know where that can lead, and virtually nothing is lost if if leads nowhere, as long as no one of superior talent and potential is losing an opportunity.

Childersb3: Miguel Cruz walked six in 1.2 IP in his last start, so I guess he is improving. Wilme Mora also walked six in one of his appearances a week or two ago, and one or two others have walked five. I don't know what would be the most I have ever seen a pitcher throw in a game out here, because the manager / pitching coach usually gets the pitcher out of the game if it gets too ridiculous.

As for the attendance, probably about 20 of the 25 were early arrivals for the Savannah Bananas game who came over to Field # 1 to see what was going on, and once they saw all the bases on balls (12 walks by Cubs pitchers and four by Angels pitchers) they ran away screaming. I'm used to it so it didn't bother me that much.

Jed has added Teheran, Tyranski, Kissaki, and now Straily and Nico Zeglin today.

Zeglin is 24 yrs old. Pitched well at Long Beach St in '23 and well in some Indy Ball.

They also added Reilly and Viets in late ST.

Have to search for MiLB arm depth anywhere you can and at all times!!!

    25 in Attendance!!!

Phil, is that a backfield record?

Also, 6 BBs for Cruz in 2 IP. What's the most walks you've seen in one EXT ST outing that you can recall?

He has a pulse. Apparently that’s the only requirement at this point.
