I realize today's game is blacked out for MLB.TV Mosaic users but regardless Mosaic for the second consecutive day is not even registering a game between CUBS and CARDS... anyone else experiencing the same difficulties?

Damnit! I live in Seattle, and we don't get WGN. I rarely get to see the Cubs play live, because the time difference makes MLB.TV worthless (I can't watch day games at 11am at work...I would get nothing done). Similarly, why pay for the whole ExtraInnings on Comcast, as I'm almost always at work for Cubs games. So today, I thought the game would be on FOX, but no! We get another chapter in this stupid Sox/Yankees love-fest by the media. They really need to at least make an attempt to promote some of the other rivalries in baseball! They pick the richest two teams and give them even more media coverage! I hate the Yankees, so I root for the Sox to beat them, but I don't watch for the love of the game. Rather, I watch out of sheer hatred of Rivera, Damon, Jeter, Giambi, etc. I watch for the inevitable train wreck that is the Yankees pitching. In short, I watch because I want to see the Yankees play bad baseball. Just because I watch my beloved Cubs do that all the time and I take comfort in the fact that someone can spend even more money than we do and still have a team that blows it in the 8th against their rivals. I must admit the Yankees have had infinitly more success than the Cubbies have.... Still, why would FOX do the Sox/Yankees out here? Before the Rockies came to Denver, there were swaths of the mountain west that were Cubs enclaves. That's about 2000 miles away from NYC and Boston, but a lot closer to Chicago and Seattle. Ugh. I lived in NYC and can't shake the Yankees. When will it end?

I'm not watching the Yanks/Sox game. Not out of spite, but rather I don't care. When will they learn that people don't tune in to watch 'baseball'. They want to watch their team. I need a freaking Slingbox and put it in Chicago.

Dude, we should all go in on a couple slingboxes ad put them in someone's basement and have a TCR login to stream the games across the country. That would be rad. Either way, I'll watch another game on Gameday. Its so painful.

I do watch Mariners' games to watch "baseball," and I will watch regular games on TV. But regular fans won't do that.

yea, i am sort of close to Chicago (western ohio, about 4 hours) but i get the yanks/sox game. needless to say i hate both, and am pissed about it.

The Cubs would have accepted a decent offer for JJ any time since Soriano signed. If Hendry is holding out for a deal that actually helps the Cubs, good for him. Meanwhile, competition is good. The odd man out may be Darryl Ward, not JJ.

Possible moves: 1) Pie down, Guzman or Cherry up. 2) Jones traded, Guzman or Cherry up. 3) Miller traded, Guzman up.

Good news from LouPa. Hopefully JJ is going to the bench or Hendry has found a new home for him.

If you ever wondered how lame the Cards bloggers are, hows this for comical. After Josh from the Card MVN site came here to taunt us yesterday, he continued to bitch about Cubs fans on his blog, and told Cub fans to quote "bring it." So what does he do when some TCRers post on his site? Cowardly deletes them. How did MVN let that idiot get his own site? I know you can't expect much from St. Louis fans, but there's got to be someone who wouldn't be such an embarassment to the network.

Not only did he delete many of the posts, but he locked some of the threads. What a joke.

Pinella says in that same article posted on #6 that Cubs will go back to 12 pitchers. Which, given that situation, I vote most likely scenario is that Ward departs the major league club via trade or demotion and that Guzman makes his way back up. JJ most likely gone at a time that is more close to trade deadline... but i would have to say with the move of Soriano to Left, Pie's arrival (and defense), and the need to keep Murton around...that JJ's days in Chicago are absolutely numbered.

Barrett with a nice pick me up homerun... i can't stand the cardinals.... i don't think it would hurt me one bit if they never won a game ever again.

sorry, but if Soriano moves to LF, you have a serious Cliff Floyd problem. He's swinging the bat quite well and his only position is LF. I'm very curious what the Cubs are planning here.

well Pie is signing his ticket back to Iowa anyway.... other than Cedeno I don't know whon else they'd send back to Iowa to get back to 12 pitchers?

isnt this an OB% freakout croud no matter how slow a guy is? dude has a .400+ ob%!!!! of course its just cuz of 4 walks, a single, and a double in 17 plate appearances (counting today's lineout). he plays a surprisingly good 1st for a fat tub of lard.

His high OBP is due to 3 IBB's which I don't really count in terms of player evaluation.

Will Ohman's 2 scoreless frames today give me some measured confidence. Didn't see the last few innings, but the box tells me that he threw very well. That's always a good sign. Getting him back on the horse would be very helpful.

You're forgetting an option 10man, Jacque takes over in CF until Soriano's hamstring heals and his bat heats up. It's supposed to rain on Sun so that may be another reason Lou is planning on moving Soriano back to left. Someone during the broadcast mentioned that too. Girardi I think.

Where is everyone calling for Ronny to be sent down the minors now? He made a baserunning error, which i thought the 2nd base ump should have been yelling "ball four ball four" to let ronny know what had happened. But anyone, those who were calling to ship him to Iowa ASAP must realize that he isn't going anywhere.

j.jones in CF is pretty much the only option that makes sense, imo. hey, pie is neat and all...but call me in 2008/2009...or sept 07....or whenever his power stroke wakes up to match his bat speed and there's not a guy on the team who can play the position and hit consistently, too. now that said...holy crap who the hell is gonna play RF while this stuff unfolds? are they seriously gonna keep pie? what about the 2 "other" LF'rs who cant play RF worth a damn cuz they can barely make their play in LF look good? Fox Sports is painting a more permanent picture of soriano moving to LF...that's gonna add to the speculation of what's really going down.

btw...im assuming this is a temp. thing no matter what some headlines may lead with. it just doesnt make sense to throw a 3rd LF'r in the mix on a perm basis right now...not this early in the year anyway.

Discouraging game at the plate for Pie -- particularly in the 3rd or 4th inning -- runner on 3rd, one out, RH pitcher on the mound -- and he was terribly late with all of his swings, ultimately fouling out to Rolen. He clearly has a long way to go with the bat -- love the D and the speed, though. Will more time at Iowa help (maybe with his power?) or is he better off seeing MLB pitching? Verrrrry interestink move to put Fonzie in LF -- it's getting a bit crowded out there. Pie in CF? Or JJ in CF and Murton/Floyd (gack!) in RF? Hmmm...

Unless I'm mistaken, as a new signee, Ward can't be traded until the second half of June or so?

BillyBucks:
Discouraging game at the plate for Pie
I expected dreadful offense from Pie at the major league level (this is documented in past posts), but oddly enough I haven't had a problem with his plate appearances so far. Yeah his BA (a terrible stat anyways) is way down, but his at-bats "look good". When he's getting to 2-strikes he's fouling off a good number of pitches and working the count. He also drove a ball deep in the outfield today. It was fielded, but the display of some power was encouraging. This isn't the same Pie I saw in ST '06.

Wes:
Will Ohman’s 2 scoreless frames today give me some measured confidence...Getting him back on the horse would be very helpful.
Hell yeah it would. The past two years he was pretty good out of the pen. Today he looked ok, not terribly impressive, but ok (of course pitching a 5-6 run game is different than a tie or 1-run game). He threw more strikes and more fastballs.

Marquis, DeRosa and Lilly doing their best at making Hendry look smart again. Now if we can jus get Soriano and Zambrano going, and a shorstop hitting the Cubs should be in pretty good shape.

I can't make fun of the Cards blogger 8 ( "Why couldn’t Jason Marquis pitch like he did Saturday all of last year. At one time last year, as a Cardinal, he led the league in wins and losses." Two words: Larry Rotheschild.

Obviously Barrett should be sat more often for Blanco. Concerning Pie, you can't just expect someone to come up and perform right away. As someone already said, he's had some good at bats, just hasn't had success yet. Success takes ABs which he won't get if he gets benched or sent down right away. He's lights out better in CF and his bat should come along. He made some plays today I doubt anyone else could have made, all of which would led to doubles at the very least. I did get to watch today's game since I live in Missouri, and boy howdy was there some dreadful defense from both sides. I hope to God Lou is stressing calling the ball right now, because it's sorely needed. Also, thank god Murton is hitting again. He is a critical part of this team being about the only person with decent OBP and I really want to see him force his way into starting on a consistent basis.

The problem is Pie isn't even remotely close to major league ready with his bat. Ok he can play defense, but he is also likely to hit .200 as well. Pie is just another flavor of the month to some of you. And when he keeps hitting like shit most you clamoring for him to stay will be throwing his ass under a bus and trading him for the next Neifi Perez. Hell Murton hit with a .900 OPS in the second half last year and most of you guys threw his ass under the bus. What in sam hell does Pie have to do? Have a 1.200 OPS with 50 HR's and 50 SB's? It isn't going to hurt Pie one single bit to stay in the minors and learn how to be a better hitter. He is only 22 what is the rush? I am all for playing younger players when there are no better options but Pie isn't even the 4th best OFer on our roster.

#24- But anyone, those who were calling to ship him to Iowa ASAP must realize that he isn’t going anywhere. cedeno is not going anywhere for 2 simple reasons: there is nobody any better than he is to take his spot, and the logjam on this club is in the outfield not the infield. cedeno does not deserve playing time over derosa or theriot, and as the replacement for izturis...i see precious little difference between them. mike c.- but Pie isn’t even the 4th best OFer on our roster this is presently true from the offensive point of view only. pie is miles ahead of every other outfielder in the field. the san diego game is lost in regulation without his throw to gun down branyan, and no way does marquis get a shoutout on saturday without the catches pie made. the cubs may still have won, but there would have been much weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth around here if the cards had once again come from behind to win. if the choice is soriano plays cf and can't hit because he is brain-locked on playing the field with murton/floyd in left, or soriano in left and thumping while pie hits .210 in center, gimme a double slice of pie, please.

Great game yesterday. Kudos to Jason Marquis especially keeping his composure pitching against the scum of the midwest. Cheers to you my man for sticking it up the ass of that mullet wearing, puppy licking, drunk driving douche bag.

Uncle Lou has made it official: When Soriano returns on Monday, he'll be in left. Which means that Pie stays in center, and everybody else is in right.

I agree with DC on the Pie situation. This team is showing it's usual tendency to win by large margins and lose the close ones. When losing the close ones, it is also showing its tendency to be really, really fundamentally bad. Since offense is typically not there in the close ones, good defense had better be.

I third the motion on having Pie's defence (what ever happened to John Hill?) present in CF. I don't think he has much more to learn in the minors. Let him see major league pitching while solidifying the outfield.

I'll give the kid some dap, MikeC. It's a really nice feeling to know that if Hill, Marquis, or Lilly are starting, 4 runs will certainly win it for you and 2 or 3 will still probably get the job done. I don't expect success to continue at this level for the whole year, but if we got something in the high 3's or low 4's for Marquis and 12 wins or so, that would be way beyond my wildest expectations.

Pie was hitting .444 at Iowa. I really don't think he has more to learn in Triple-A. I say play him. At worst, don't hit him leadoff when Soriano comes back.

Well, if this team can hit, it can win. The pitching staff really is the best we have had in many, many years, with the exception of the end of 2003. Lilly, Marquis and Hill have been brilliant. If and when Z turns it around, we can compete with any team, pitching wise. There were a lot of detractors when Marquis was signed. I thought it was a good signing at the time. It was fun watching him pitch yesterday. Aside from the first two or three innings, Marquis was totally in command. Even when runners got on base, it looked like he knew what he was doing and he seemed very calm. And that was through some pretty shoddy defense by the Cubs in the middle innings, including ARAM dropping a pop up, booting a grounder and Ronny booting a grounder. As I recall, the fans of the Cards were laughing when we signed Marquis. I doubt many of them are laughing any longer.

Sadly defense counts for very little if you are not hitting to back it up. If Pie can hit he can stay, if he can't I don't care how good his defense is he isn't worth a damn thing. Lou said this at the end of the article on Chicagosports.com..... "We need to start scoring some more runs," Piniella said. "Whoever is swinging the bat can write his own ticket." Right now Theriot is writing his own ticket. For the Pie loving crowd, he better pick it up also, or his ass is being shipped back to AAA. His defense alone isn't going to keep him in the majors.

Worked for Neifi! kidding....

>>>His defense alone isn’t going to keep him in the majors. so, can we expect Izturis to be demoted as well?

Sadly defense counts for very little if you are not hitting to back it up. There are plenty of Cubs with good hitting on their resumes. When you lose games 2-1, it's because the "professional hitters" are failing. That being the case, which of our mighty outfielders can pick up the slack? Why make it Pie's responsibility? He's a rookie with just a few games under his belt. (How do we know he can't hit, yet, anyway, after just a few games?) Having said that, I'd still rather win that game 1-0 because our outfield didn't give away inopportune doubles, than lose it 2-1 on shoddy defense. Our outfield is atrocious defensively, and we need more stability out there, IMO. If you want to pick on small bats, look at our SS position, which has not been making up for poor hitting with stellar defense.

MikeC:
How about some nice comments about Jason Marquis? 4 games started 1.88 ERA.
He's been outstanding. Jason wanted this game in a bad way so he had a lot of focus. I'm hoping that carries over to future starts.

MikeC:
Right now Theriot is writing his own ticket. For the Pie loving crowd, he better pick it up also, or his ass is being shipped back to AAA. His defense alone isn’t going to keep him in the majors.
Theriot has been impressive taking outside pitches to the opposite field. It will be interesting to see how the league adjusts to him. Piniella also said something interesting yesterday, about how depending on the wind, you have to play small ball or big ball. So we might see different looking teams on the field depending on the direction of the wind.

Levine saying Santo checked himself into a hospital last night with an irregular heartbeat. He'll be away from the club for the next few days at the least. Obviously not the first time he's had heart issues.

You guys do understand Izturis isn't competing against Floyd, Murton, Soriano and Jones for playing time right? That is what Pie is up against. Izturis has Cedeno and maybe Theriot against him. Two totally different set of standards. And saying they are in the same situation is just plain silly and not true.

"You guys do understand Izturis isn’t competing against Floyd, Murton, Soriano and Jones for playing time right? That is what Pie is up against." Itz-TURD-is (aka CHAD'S BOY) is pathetic and can't hit. Cedeno makes spectacular gems and at the same time can't make routine plays that one would expect. Frankly, he is not too bright with his decision making at the MLB level which scares me. So - which poison do you take? The former "Gold Glove" that will NEVER see one again, and will have trouble hiting even .200, or the kid who has more pop, great range, but is unreliable? What a dilema for the most important IF position. This one is squarely on HENDRY! You WEASEL!!!

I don’t know why the Tigers would do something silly like that other than being able to get him on the cheap, but there you go. Because Will Ohman has been one of the most effective pitchers in baseball versus lefties the last two years and Dombrowski probably isn't stupid enough to put more merit in 5-6 2007 innings compared to two full seasons of making lefties generally look silly.

Hey I am not a fan of Izturis either. I would be happy with Theriot taking his job. But again Izturis doesn't have the talent in his path like Pie does.

Well - in 2006 I read he had a BA of .158 which is pretty damn good. But his ERA of 4.13, for a reliever, is pretty bad. 34 BB is pretty mediocre for 65 IP, as well. All I can ay about him is - shrug - eh. I have more confidence in the other two guys to this point.

well mike c.- i am not sure soriano in cf is the worst idea that ever came along, except that pie is better. at least half the cubs starters = hill and lilly historically produce more fly ball outs than ground ball outs. marquis and zambrano are ground ball pitchers. on these days you keep your infield strong defensively and maximize the outfield offense. this outfield is set up with a platoon- somewhere, somehow, every day- keeping pie here to be a starter at least 2 games out of every 5, and pinchrun or pinch hit, and be a defensive replacement for the days that soriano starts in cf seems the best use of the resources at hand. let alone giving the guy the cf job full time. frankly, murton to iowa makes more sense to me, at least until hendry is able to trade jones, or murton, or releases ward as redundant.

You guys do understand Izturis isn’t competing against Floyd, Murton, Soriano and Jones for playing time right? Who said or implied this? I've read every post and didn't get this impression. That is what Pie is up against. Every player on the team is up against the same thing: Trying to find a place in the lineup by using his strengths and minimizing his weaknesses; and hoping that combination makes him more appealing than his competition. But again, when you say things like: Sadly defense counts for very little if you are not hitting to back it up it sounds like you are saying a player needs to justify solid defensive skills with good hitting. In my mind it is quite the opposite. Would Barrett have a job at all if he couldn't hit? Would Floyd? Teams will accept mediocre-to-poor defensive skills if the bat makes up for it. As I said earlier, this is not really a team lacking in bats. It lacks in consistent bats. We are not seeing a team where on any given day, 3-4 guys in the lineup are going to have a good day. It's all or nothing as it's been this entire century. If you can't hit on a given day, you have to pitch. And even Cy Young needed guys behind him who could catch the ball. Again, I agree with DC. This is going to have to be a mix and match lineup until the Cubs can manage to not make the Bradon Loopers of this world look like HOF pitchers.

1. Re Pie: Its amazing how some folks can say a young player can't hit after only 20 to 30 plate appearances. With such perceptive talent scouts available at the time, bums such as Willie Mays, Mike Schmidt (who hit .196 in his rookie year), and Ryne Sandberg would not have encumbered major league rosters and later the Hall of Fame. I think right now, Lou wants to see more fly balls caught and is willing to wait a bit to see if Pie can adjust and start hitting major league pitching. 2. The arrival of PIe definitely creates a surplus of outfielders. Nate Silver speculates on baseball prospectus speculates on Jones or Floyd being traded. I like Murton, he is going to be a good player, and he gives this team something it sorely lacks with high OBP. But this team also needs left-handed hitting in its line-up and hence the need for Cliff Floyd and Jacque Jones (at least the 2006 version of JJ). 3. One run games are as much decided by pure luck, random chance (Adam Everret hitting a home run, and to the a lesser extent, Preston Wilson, hitting a game winning home run) as poor fundamentals. 4. Isturis had no offense the last two years in LA so I see no surprise in fact that he is hitting below the Mendoza line. 5. Baseball America had a column about the productivity of Major League Farm systems and it surprised me that the Cubs ranked so high with 39 on major league 25 men ML rosters. The details showed that 29 were pitchers, where (the one could put together a pretty good rotation with Dontrelle Willis, Jon Garland, Ricky Nolascco, Kyle Lohse, and Reynel Pinto). But only 10 were position players (and Murton and Eric Hinske were originally drafted by other organizations). Hendry's fundamental problem as a GM has his failure to recognize that OBP and the importance of left-handedness in judging offensive players.

3. One run games are as much decided by pure luck, random chance (Adam Everret hitting a home run, and to the a lesser extent, Preston Wilson, hitting a game winning home run) as poor fundamentals. how can you tell? most sabre folks only talk about offense because defense is hard to measure. defense is one of the last reasons on earth to actually watch a baseball game.
