I thought the injuries to Johnson, Byrd, and Baker cleared a spot for Colvin. It looks like the Cubs have given up on him. DeWitt just pulled a Soriano in LF. Now would be a perfect time to get Colvin up as he can get some playing time now.

d.barney and t.campana agree dunno why k.hill is getting almost every start, though...quade doesn't seem to have a youth problem.

F-18 fly overs top 4th get Astros swinging at anything, Lopez goes 1-2-3...Let's invite the Air Force over for every game!

Soriano hurt his leg running out a groundball in the first inning and was replaced by Blake DeWitt. Cubs announced it is a left quad strain. Is that going to clear a spot for Colvin to return?

He looked better in the 2nd. Hopefully he can at least eat some innings this year until we hopefully get a better option.

Rodrigo Lopez isn't very impressive so far. Throwing a lot of 81-82mph hanging sliders, and the occasional 88-89mph fastball.

Wow. All MLB teams are wearing commemorative Memorial Day hats, which are butt ugly. They look like 1970's foam truckers hats. Red and white. Awful. The old ones they wore before with the regular hats with team logo in stars and stripes looked far better.

The Cubs should call up Fernando and have all kinds of bizarre promotions, like Lex Luthor day, Kriptonite day, Abba day, etc.

Lord Voldemort Quade sucked the life out of Stevens arm in that 89 pitch 3.1 IP relief outing on April 22nd vs LA, but whatever... Speedy Fernando dodges a bullet. Maybe he can have a Fernando cape day too.

    Jeff Stevens has been DFA.

Seriously, that's where he probably belongs at this point.

Quade to DJ: Welcome to Chicago, kid. Now grab some wood. You might see the field in a week or so. Just ask Castillo, who sat for Hill. You're behind Barney, and he's a stud regular now. You'll be the second PH behind DeWitt for now.

That's both funny AND poetic! Makes me yearn for Haiku Wednesdays (or whatever day it used to be).

If the Cubs do in fact bring up D. J. LeMahieu and then option him back to the minors once Jeff Baker returns from the DL, LeMahieu would get a 4th minor league option year, as long as it is used prior to 2015. LeMahieu probably is the eventual heir to the Jeff Baker Roster Slot, just as Ryan Flaherty will very likely eventually fill the Blake DeWitt Roster Slot, and Steve Clevenger will take-over the Koyie Hill Roster Slot. A Flaherty/LeMahieu platoon at 3B in 2012 is a possibility, since I doubt that the Cubs will go outside the organization to replace Aramis Ramirez, especially if they put all of their available cash into the Prince Fielder Free-Agent Fund. Even if Josh Vitters does develop into an MLB everyday 3B, I doubt that he will be ready anytime before 2013.

I think the Cashner move opened up a 40 man slot for Snyder, so someone is getting DFA'd. Fernando Perez is my guess, and they keep passing him up for other OF's (Campana, Montanez, Snyder, and likely later on, Colvin). Although Stevens or Caridad could be the one.
  • Paul Noce 12 years 10 months ago (view)

Cashner was moved to the 60 day dl, either earlier today or yesterday, I forget which. That should free up the spot. Snyder was already on the 40 man, wasn't he?

Cubs pitching prospect Rob Whitenack has a strained elbow, according to a couple of Cubs people. That never sounds good, but the Cubs said they had no plans to bring Whitenack to Chicago to get looked at. That might be a good sign because they’re generally very cautious on these things. It’s something to keep an eye on, though. Bruce Miles Blog: http://blogs.dailyherald.com/node/5779
