Cubs Minor League Recap for April 16, 2012

I'd give the stars of the night to two Peoria Chiefs, Ryan Cuneo and Michael Jensen.

Iowa 3 - @Round Rock 2; No multi-hit games for Iowa, but Campana, Jackson, Castillo  and Cardenas reach base multiple times. Campana and Jackson's speed and the defensive miscues of Tommy Mendonca (3B) and Dusty Brown (C) lead to two runs without a hit for Iowa in the third. Sappelt added the go-ahead run with a triple in the 6th to score Castillo. Coleman got the start and went 5.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K. B. Parker gets his second save of the season.

@Huntsville 5 - Tennessee 2; McNutt gives up his first run of the season but just the one in 4 innings of work including 3 K's and 1 BB. He gets saddled with the loss but it was J. Antigua with the bad night, giving up 4 ER in 2.1 innings of work. No walks for the Smokies and just 2 extra-base hits by Apodaca and Mota.

@Dunedin 6 - Daytona 3; Szczur with a 4/5 night, but Rohan is the offensive star with a 3/5 night including a double and a home run. E. Jokisch goes 6 innings against the Toronto affiliate, giving up 4 ER on 7 K, 3 BB and 6 H.

@Peoria 6 - Cedar Rapids 2; Multi-hit games for Rafael Lopez, R. Cuneo, and Paul Hoilman. Oliver Zapata also got on-base three times with the help of two walks. Cuneo though lifted two over the fence and had 4 RBI's for the best offensive performance of the evening. M. Jensen improved to 3-0 with a line of 6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 HR.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be savored...unedited. 40 years, wow.

Does he have any options left, Phil?
