Diamondbacks @ Cubs: Corbin vs Lester (Game 105)

AZ (60-45): LHP Patrick Corbin (8-9, 4.36)
CHC (56-48): LHP Jon Lester (8-6, 3.88)
First pitch: 7:05pmCST

Lester gave up 2 ER in 7 innings on Thursday against the White Sox for his third straight win. Overall, the D’backs are 15-59 (.254) against him. Goldschmidt is 3-6 with a HR.Corbin beat Atlanta is last time out (7 IP, 2 ER, 5 K, 4 BB). He’s 2-6 with a 6.19 on the road this season. The Cubs are 3-22 (.136) against him. Baez has a HR in 3 ABs.

The Cubs are 13-3 since the All-star break and are kicking a 4-game lead in the loss column over the Brewers, who did very Brewer-like things at the trade deadline, in bringing back a lagging Jeremy Jeffrees to fix their lagging bullpen. Atta way, boys.

Arizona is 14 games behind the Dodgers and really makes you appreciate how much the Cubs are in the right division this season.

Arrieta (10-7) and Godley (4-4) continue the series tomorrow at 7:05pmCST.

Go Cubs!

Brooks seems like a definite offseason (or maybe later this season if space is needed) 40 man casualty. I could also see Grimm getting non-tendered, as he'll likely be making in the neighborhood of $2 million. Butler seems likeliest to make it through offseason on 40 man.

My world series hangover is over. I'm ready to see the Cubs start winning again. I hope to see this Saturday against the Nationals. I also hope to encounter a nacho-toting Chris Christie at some point.

scherzer pitches an inning, hits his 1st career HR, then exits before pitching the 2nd. neat. --- Dan Kolko @masnKolko This is bizarre. Max Scherzer is coming out of this game. Came out to throw warmup pitches, then walked off and said "I can't go."

c.zambrano carried around m.fontenot on his back in the cubs dugout pre-game...part of one of their old dugout celebrations. didn't think i'd ever see that again. so awesome. Z is doing a spanish language broadcast for ARZ. here's an old pic for reference: http://i.imgur.com/W8mXtBq.jpg

I see the additions of WIlson and Avila to the roster have done wonders for our offense.

I don't know which team to root for in Mil. I think I'm more worried about the Cardinals long term so would be nice to see them drop 5.5 back. But a 3.5 game division lead would be pretty good too.

I'm not worried about the Cards at all... They just don't look good. They don't have it this year. Even their fans know and admit it. The Brewers have played the Cubs tough all year. I'd much rather the Cards win this series 2-1. And it's always probably best to root for whomever is behind in the standings.

Lester throwing 97 pitches through 4 in a blowout is less than ideal to start a 9 game stretch.

in the realm of high strung baseball players (of which lester is one) it's probably not a "thing." he was probably 75% mad at himself and 25% mad at maddon, but knows 100% it was all on him with his pitch count and performance in the 5th before getting removed. most likely not going to be any kind of issue.

Wasn't De la Rosa an AZ PHIL follow? He was on the Cubs?

oscar de la cruz, maybe? probably the cubs #1 pitching prospect at the moment even though he "only" profiles for a high-middle rotation guy rather than an ace. depends on how you feel about j.albertos and the surging a.alzolay.

Saw Hatch in Prince William (Virginia) on Sunday and he looked like the real deal. Rucker going today for the Pelicans in Frederick but it's an afternoon game and I don't feel like leaving work. Anyway, I'm already sunburned from the doubleheader Sunday. I actually got in three Nat-Pelican games over the weekend and apart from Hatch, I saw interesting talent in Eddy Martinez and Pedro Araujo. That's about it.

Cleveland got a strike out to end game after scoring 2 in the 9th to take the lead...but was wild pitch and guy got to 1st. Next batter hits homer to win game for Red Sox. That is an absolutely brutal way to lose.

c.allen picks up his 6th loss and kimbrell picks up his 3rd win. kimbrell blew his WHIP out of whack...now he's got an ugly 0.67 WHIP rather than the 0.59 WHIP he came into the game with. his out of control ERA ballooned to 1.61 rather than 1.24 he came into the game with. he did get his 81st K in 44.2ip, though. bet boston wishes they were more aggressive at the trade deadline.

Incredible game! Sale gives up 7 runs, Carrasco gives up 5 in less than 2 innings, Kimbrell allows 2 9th-inning runs to blow the lead, with the go-ahead run scoring on a 2-out wild pitch, then what blockhead said in the bottom, plus the HR was only Vasquez's 2nd of the year. Must have been a multiple-beer ninth for Red Sox fans.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be savored...unedited. 40 years, wow.
