The Cubs reach the century mark of the season that may mark their century-long run of futility. A little known fact is that they've lost the 100th game of every season since 1909 foreshadowing their 100-year drought (don't bother looking it up, I've posted it on the Internet, so it must be true)

All kidding aside, the Cubs hopes of a .500 road trip lay on the right arm of Jason Marquis. It's good that he's sporting a 2.08 ERA versus the NL West this season in 60.2 IP. Hopefully he can add to the recent run of success by the starters who have gone into the seventh inning in five straight games and eight of the last ten and have a 2.06 ERA since July 4th (how awesome are press notes - crutch of the ever-lazy writer?).

Of course, it'll require the Cubs offense actually scoring to get the win and Lou has the cure for the road hitting woes (emphasis added):

"...we're canceling batting practice, and the next day, we're going to
cancel batting practice. We're going to come out here and just stretch
and play. That's it. I'm tired of seeing balls flying all over batting
practice, and when the (darn) game starts, I see very little or
nothing. So we'll just go play and hope that'll get it going. We did it
Sunday, and it worked.
So we'll see."

Small sample size means nothing to Lou...

So, two games in a row the Arizona guys are playing with two first basemen and no second baseman? Bold new strategy...

TCR proofreaders are on summer vacation...they also take the entire winter and spring off, but during the fall we don't miss a comma.

3-0 in the 4th

No Brewer has gotten past home plate in the game.

EDIT: Son of Cecil just ended that.

great...game hasnt started and WGN hasnt gotten their video feed up in the 10 minutes or so i've been watching.

Right there with you Crunch. Is there bad weather somewhere?

An inning and a half into the damn game, and already I'm aggravated.

Anybody know the Cubs receord this year in domes and stadiums with retractable roofs? Has to be pretty dismal, I would think.

slumps are no fun.
especially when the brewers are hot.

Another Ramirez drive dies on the warning track.

What the hell is going on out there? Do they crank up the A/C when the Cubs are at bat?

Brewers won't be denied -- score 4 runs in the last 3 innings to beat the Cards again in St. Louis, and have CC and Sheets lined up for the next 2. They have now won 5 straight on the road. Cubs couldn't dream of doing that -- the current 2-0 deficit in AZ feels like 10-0.

Best hope is for a Brewers sweep, and then the Cards get swept this weekend in NY.

Okay, make that a pace for 34 double plays...

Hopefully Hendry is out shopping for some relief help because tonight does not inspire much confidence.

Needs more home games.

good thing the iowa cubs are close by it will be
a short trip for kevin hart see ya .

wow road trips suck

i vote for mighty mike with sneaky power
to bat cleanup tomorrow and give ramirez the
day off

If Sori doesn't return on Wednesday, I vote for big crazy Z to play LF and bat cleanup.

/only half kidding

I wouldn't mind if Z played 1B for a few games. Either that or make GIDPLee start bunting when guys are on first.

/only 10% kidding

No excuses for Hart, but with the help behind him by Hoffpauer, Lee and Ramirez in that inning, it's almost amazing he didn't give up more. But yeah, two walks and a HBP are nothing to write home about. Just sayin', it's not as bad as the box score looks.

If the hand is fine tomorrow he will play.

And then it was down to 1.

when did Lee last hit a home run?
During the Kennedy administration?

Cubs announced they will bring in Ichiro as a motivational speaker.

The Brewers are falling right into our trap.

They sweep the Cards, sending St. Louis into a season-crushing tailspin. Meanwhile, the Cubs are cleverly aiming their line drives right at the AZ outfielders, giving the impression of weakness so that the Brewers become overconfident.

Then, we sweep the Brewers next week, CC and Prince eat gallons of Fudge Ripple ice cream and spriral into a bloated depression, and we cruise to the division title and more.

Yes! Yes!! Now fly, my pretties, FLY!!!!

well brewers could definately sweep cards they have
sabathia sheets going next 2 days
they are also lined up to pitch monday and tuesday
vs. us nothing a tweaked groin for sheets wont cure.

  • "KingKongVsGodzilla"? So - was there a winner?

  • Baez is looking like a pretty special player.

  • Hey AZPhil,

Love checking TCR for your writeups. Quick question - any of these 2015 positional IFAs stand out to you yet? I'm most specifically referring to Kwon, Sierra, Paredes, and Amaya, but I know there's a couple other guys from that class in EXST as well.

  • bored...looking at stats for the hell of it...

felix pena (26yo) moving to the pen in AAA is looking like an insanely good fit so far in a smallish sample size

    13ip 4h 3bb 20K

remembering back to spring training he was regularly hitting mid-90s (though he didn't have a good spring stats-wise). as a starter in the minors he usually worked low-90s.

this could be an arm worth keeping an eye on even if he's only a 1-inning guy who was "demoted" to the pen to start the year.

  • Phil, historically this front office has been patient with their prep pitchers keeping their IP low and moving them one level at a time. I know I'm getting ahead of myself, and you may not be able to formulate an opinion on this, but you've seen a lot of pitchers over the years, so...

  • nice.

also, after tonight's loss, STL is 13-14.

also also, the wsox are 19-8.

  • Win tomorrow, and the Cubs would have a 6-game lead. On May 4.

  • Fully agree on Addy -- hope he is our SS for a long time. I'm just surprised he has 4 errors already -- the last 2 on routine plays.

  • Guess how many Carlos Correa has?

    3

I would still rather have Russell, right now, than any shortstop the team has had in many years. The future is bright enough to wear shades.

EDIT: Gonzo WOULD have been my favorite, 'cepting a certain error of a double-play ball...

  • Hi Phil, made it home tonight safely. Looks like Cease is getting better each outing. I see Crow did ok today too. I will be reading your write_ups everyday. Great seeing you while there!

  • tomorrow's game is a 12:35pm EST game for some ungodly stupid reason...then it's back to wrigley field for a night game on the 5th.

  • The best part of tonight's game was 6 different players with RBIs. Truly a lineup that doesn't give up top to bottom.

  • excubs [email protected]_NEWS

Jake Arrieta first Cub to go 6-0 in first six starts since Three Finger Brown in 1908.

  • Russell now with 4 errors -- that's a big (unpleasant) surprise.

  • Thanks Phil!

  • Throwing error to 2nd on a possible double play ball.
