Cubs' Non-Baseball Business is Booming

"...Elton John's going to help us win some ballgames."

So says Crane Kenney in explaining how the extra revenue the Cubs will realize from three Wrigley Field concerts this summer, including the Elton John/Billy Joel event in late July, will translate into additional payroll flexibility.

More from Kenney:

"The CBOE [seat] auction last year paid for Rich Harden. The 'Road to Wrigley' game sponsored our Asian scouting operation. That's the way, from the business end, we look at these things. All
these elements really help our business move forward. My view is if
you're a Cub fan, you should enjoy the concerts whether you're an Elton
John fan or not."

The Trib's Dave van Dyck also reports that the Cubs will be opening a new, year-round, 7,000-square-foot sports bar at Addison & Sheffield in time for the home opener on April 13th. The Harry Caray's Restaurant group will run the place, which will replace the Friendly Confines Cafe and be accessible to fans whether or not they hold a ticket to the game.

"We need to compete with all the other bars and restaurants in town,"
Kenney said.

Indeed. We can't have our baseball team not competing with all of the city's bars and restaurants.

im not letting someone who tells me to enjoy an elton john concert tell me what to do.

\m/>.<\m/

It's getting late have you seen my mates
Ma tell me when the boys get here
It's seven o'clock and I want to rock
Want to get a belly full of beer

My old man's drunker than a barrel full of monkeys
And my old lady she don't care
My sister looks cute in her braces and boots
A handful of grease in her hair

Don't give us none of your aggravation
We had it with your discipline
Saturday night's alright for fighting
Get a little action in

Get about as oiled as a diesel train
Gonna set this dance alight
`Cause Saturday night's the night I like
Saturday night's alright alright alright

Well they're packed pretty tight in here tonight
I'm looking for a dolly who'll see me right
I may use a little muscle to get what I need
I may sink a little drink and shout out "She's with me!"

A couple of the sound that I really like
Are the sounds of a switchblade and a motorbike
I'm a juvenile product of the working class
Whose best friend floats in the bottom of a glass

i dislike you with great intensity.

"...Elton John's going to help us win some ballgames."

Are they continuously playing his 80's music into the visitor's club house?

Dunno, but I bet he gives a pretty good reverse chalupa.

The WBC play by play guy called an out to Granderson "a line out to central"

Huh?

US loses 10-6. Guthrie gave up 6 in the 2nd inning. US was able to cut it to 7-6, but then LaTroy gave up a 3 run bomb. Sounds about right.

Still haven't figured out who the US will play in the semis. They still have to sort out the seeding between the Koreans & Japan/Cuba.

"The desperation defensive deployment backfired Wednesday night in the World Baseball Classic when Dunn made a wild throw that led to four unearned runs and Venezuela won Group 2 by beating the Americans 10-6 to conclude second-round play in Miami."

the best part...he was playing 1st and it was a throwing error

adam dunn...you go girl!

It would have made more sense to play DeRosa at first and Dunn in left.

Check it out. The Indians don't want DeRosa playing first in the WBC. That put Dunn there.

Check it out. The Nationals didn't want Dunn playing first in the WBC.

and I quote Johnson

"Adam Dunn is playing first base tonight, out of necessity, but the Nationals don't want him there in the next round. Mark DeRosa can play first, but the Indians don't want him playing there, Johnson said."

Thanks for the replies in the previous thread about tickets - i will try and upgrade my tickets from ebay or stubhub. one quickie, if the tickets are to be printed at home, and they forward the email onto me, what is to stop them selling the seats again and forwarding on the same email to someone else???

sorry never used stubhub, and print at home tickets have only just caught on over here - i especially like it when they charge the same amount as if they have to post to you...

"forward the email onto me, what is to stop them selling the seats again and forwarding on the same email to someone else???"

You just have to rely on their honesty. If you get to the game and they don't work ebay has a process to get a refund (but that's a pain in the ass). That's why I always go with hard tickets. I don't mess with the print at home tickets.

Stubhub I believe only sends hard tickets, and their prices aren't too bad. You can just get more of a deal on ebay I think if you catch the right auction. But I'd only bid on auctions that have tickets in hand, or are hard tickets.

Since Stubhub is affiliated with MLB, they have an eDelivery option which allows the seller to enter the bar code of the tickets. Stubhub then contacts the Cubs which invalidates that bar code and issues tickets with new bar codes to you. At least this is how I understand how it works.

This wouldn't apply to eBay.

thanks for that, will go with stubhub then

Yeah, I wouldn't buy print at home tickets on ebay. Stubhub is expensive, but really reliable.

So it sounds like from this latest Cubs.com article that Marshall has been official given the starting spot over Heilman, and that Samardzija will take Lilly's spot in the spring rotation until he gets back because Lou wants to get him more experience.

I'm sure Elton John is hitting the Target Demographic of Wrigleyville.

Just noticed: The Houston Astros are emphasizing speed and "manufacturing" runs this spring. They lead the major leagues in triples with 11 and have stolen 18 bases while being caught only once.

They also have a total of (1) win which must be some kind of record.

Manufacturing in this country is not in a good position right now. Neither are the Astros.

The story is funny, but the photo is pretty creepy.

I wonder if this new sports bar is going to charge $6 for an Old Style so you really feel like you're at the game?

Also, I kind of like their Fund Accounting approach. I'd like my bar tabs at this new Wrigley Field sports bar to go towards a top flight free agent starting pitcher next year.

I paid $5.95 for a can of Old Style once. I was at a bar in Evansville, IN and I saw it in the cooler. Being from Ohio I've never even seen an Old Style, except I knew it was the beer of Wrigleyville. Thinking, "it's a can of beer, what's it gonna be, 3 dollars max?" Bill comes, $5.95 for a can of Old Style. The bartender said it was their special import of the month. Or something stupid.

The Trib web shows the sod (from co.) being replaced at Wrigley. Is that to get it ready for the concerts?

It was planned in light of the Blackhawks game on New Year's Day. I believe the cost of the resodding was built into what the Cubs charged the NHL and the Hawks for use of Wrigley.

So is that picture some new fund drive - "We leave Elton up until we receive 100 pledges?" Please, make it go away!

Your pleas have been heard!

What's with all the Elton John hate? I am going to go sing some tonight and dedicate it to you guys.

  • Manny Rondon faced 13 batters ... and got 10 to K. Not a bad day's work.

  • With several other Cubs hitters bailing out on curves today I think overall it wasn't being seen well. It for sure looked silly but a good breaking pitch coming at you and then breaking down isn't the easiest thing to see and has made many hitters look silly. Also Soler should have more walks this year but for quite a few called strikes that were actual balls and even the called strike he bailed on was borderline.

  • it's not like we're talking about a guy who's never had issues with pitch selection and seeing the ball over here. we're talking about a guy who has some rather legendary swing-and-misses at breaking stuff who's been exploited low. going forward it's worth paying attention to seeing if he can be exploited inside, too. he seriously bailed out of the box on a called strike. sure it was a good curve, but he obviously didn't see that well at all.

  • It would seem like he is figuring it out now and it's really coming together. Really happy for him. Joe was really protecting him from the 3rd time through the order, but as you allude to, he is earning trust to go deeper.

Wondering if has potential to become a #3 pitcher? His current stats certainly support it.

  • That doesn't count b/c CRUNCH didn't see it on his 60" HDTV 5 times in replay.

I have seen many players "bail out" when the ball looked like it was gonna hit them.

Especially with the advent of the splitter and pitchers that can really get the ball to dance. Marmol, Sutter, Pedro Martinez, Curt Schilling, Derek Lowe, Smoltz, Arrietta...

These guys have made the best bail out only for the ball to come over the plate and be called a strike.

No shame in that. The same way players whiff hard enough to cause them to drill a hole in the ground from spinning.

  • a 60" TV with slow-motion replay and multiple looks on that replay helps...a lot...

it's one thing to shy away like he did the 2nd time, it's another to bail out of the box on a called strike. that happened in the 1st one he pulled away from. he misjudged that one by a foot or so...

  • Good Hendricks sure is fun to watch. He was hitting all his corners today and the Phillies couldn't do anything with his changeup.

johann 7 hours 32 min ago view
  • Bryant and I believe Zobrist both did that too.

  • Soler BB acumen and plate awareness is excellent. Not unusual for even the best players to react as if they were about to hit them, "even though they weren't that close" from your vantage point sitting on your deck, or wherever.

  • soler vs inside breaking balls is scary.

he's had 2 inside curve balls today where he reacted as if they were about to hit him even though they weren't that close...one he bailed out of the box on, it was a called strike.

  • j.urias optioned back to AAA...guess we wont be seeing him in the LAD series.

crunch 8 hours 17 min ago view
  • so is him actually getting 2 hits in a game (2 doubles!)...first time he's even been on base 2 times in a game since 9 games ago on his 3/4, 1bb day.

im ready for him to at least look like a 2-slot hitter since he's gonna be slotted there no matter what he does.

crunch 9 hours 13 min ago view
  • That Heyward move to avoid Bryant's ball hit at him was a thing of beauty too.

  • 9 pitches in and this game already rules.

HR, double...bryant's turn (who came out to a Kris Kross song for some horrible, horrible reason).

    ...2 run inning...zoobrest hitting streak at 14.

  • First time I saw Herrera was yesterday. He took like 100 pitches, fouled off a ton off Lester.

Very nice young player and perfect leadoff guy.

  • Obviously not Phil. But he mentioned this on Wednesday.

"Dominican Summer League (DSL) Opening Day is Saturday June 4th, so probably about 8-10 pitchers and position players presently at EXST in Mesa will be sent to the Cubs Dominican Academy (probably sometime this week) and be assigned to either DSL Cubs #1 or DSL Cubs #2."
