Caridad to DL; Gray Called Up and Game Thread
The first in-season roster move was annouced as Esmailin Caridad will go to the disabled list for sucking, a forearm strain with Jeff Gray getting called up. I updated the bullpen chart on the right with the green indicating Gray's appearances in the minors. Derrek Lee takes the day off with the sore right thumb, conveniently on day when Dave Bush is pitching, whom Lee is 5/31 against in his career against with a .413 OPS.

Wells K's the first 3 batters...
beware Kerry Wood

Wood has nothing to worry about as it only took Wells 14 pitches.

Yahoo is showing that Soriano doubled and Fontenot doubled, yet one man on second and no runs scored. Also nothing about Soriano being thrown out at a base. Can anyone clarify what happened?

any chance that wasn't going to hurt the Cubs?

How bad was Soriano's error?
Re: Caridad to DL; Gray Called Up and Game Thread
on Wed, 04/14/2010 - 2:54pm Permalink
it may not have prevented the 2nd run, but it let the hitter reach 3rd, easily.
it spent a long time in the corner while soriano was distracted by a kick ass 4-leaf clover he wanted to pick for his next AB.

You would think with as much work and money they put into that grass that they wouldn't have clover in it.

Was Hart's double to deep left playable?
Re: Caridad to DL; Gray Called Up and Game Thread
on Wed, 04/14/2010 - 4:08pm Permalink
it was playable off the wall, but soriano was too close to the wall to take it off the ivy properly. he was 2-3 steps in too close, not like he was hugging the wall...still...
he was getting massively boo'd out there and cheers while getting pulled for colvin. the boo's continued when he got close enough to the dugout for that crew to chime in.

As a recap on Wells' pitching, it's interesting to note that 3 of his fastballs were recorded at 93 mph by Gameday. His fastball range was generally at 90-91 most times with a few getting up to 92-93. That's a little faster than I think he generally gets credit for.
Re: Caridad to DL; Gray Called Up and Game Thread
on Wed, 04/14/2010 - 3:40pm Permalink
If those readings are accurate, that's definitely a good day for Wells as far as velocity goes. His average fastball last year, according to Fangraphs, was 89.6 MPH. So, 93 is definitely within reach, but 90s means his arm is probably feeling good.

Maybe so. I wasn't watching closely enough to make the call.
Re: Caridad to DL; Gray Called Up and Game Thread

he got hit hard but not line-drive smoking hard (and his velocity doesn't seem 93/94mph consistent, too), but both triples pretty much came from the D playing in and the ball getting hit far.

Re: Jeff Gray's velocity, per Gameday--
Threw 9 fastballs. 3 hit 90, 3 hit 91, 3 hit 93.

I swear, LaTroy ought to get an out in his next contract that exempts him from ever pitching at Wrigley (or possibly the Cubs altogether) again. It just messes with his head.

I didn't know Theriot was allowed to help the team with his baserunning.
In all seriousness, good day for Theriot so far, and Soto, Baker (who absolutely sucked in spring training), and Fukudome. Soto, despite his average, seems to be approaching his ABs okay. He's lined out a few times already this season, I think. (Fangraphs says he's suffering from a .200 BABIP despite a 30% line drive rate going into the day.)

Yahoo shows 6-6 and everyone else shows 7-6.
Yahoo is showing the Cubs won 6-6 so they must be wrong.
Just as the game is ending,,,, Soriano wants to improve his D!

this is the stuff that burns me...
"I think Tyler [Colvin] is a better fielder than me," Soriano said Wednesday. "[Cubs manager Lou Piniella] does it because it gives us a better defense. At the same time, I would like to play nine innings and play the whole game. The only way I can control that is to play defense, and that's what I have to do."
true, but well...they're words.
it doesn't make me feel better that he gave that interview and went out and played this quality of game.
meh...words...

Soriano is going to have to hit the ball and hit it over the fence to have any value to this team--Colvin's even got him beat on plate discipline and patience so far. The only advantage Soriano seems to have left on Colvin is that people believe Soriano is a realistic threat to hit 30+ homeruns a year. (I know that Colvin hasn't hit much yet either.)

What I am really worried about is whether Russel and Berg will be able to go again in the next couple of days after being used so heavily here.
Gray's line is a pretty good summation of the debate against Wins as a useful stat.
