Happy Draft Day!

The first round of the MLB draft happens today. It will last at least twice as long as necessary. Good news for us Cubs fans is they have the #6 pick, so we can get the first pick over quickly. I believe they do go through the supplemental round though today and that's two more picks (#43 and #56) for the Cubs at the end of the evening.

The buzz for the Cubs centers around the 2 high school position players, Carlos Correa ("He's another A-Rod!!!) and Albert Almora ("the Cubs would take him even if they had the #1 pick"). Huzzah! The latest mock drafts from Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus both had the Cubs taking Almora for what it's worth.

Other names loosely linked to the Cubs are Florida catcher Mike Zunino and LH prep pitcher Max Fried.

You can watch the fun on MLB.com.

"Good news for us Cubs fans is they have the #6 pick, so we can get this over with quickly."

no doubt.

well, that wrapped up a little quicker than i thought. bud selig makes a less-than-2-minute speech. neat.

this might happen in 30-45 minutes. everyone's on the clock for 5 minutes and i'm sure most (if not all) will stretch it out as long as possible for no other reason than "making TV."

I forgot about the supplemental picks. At least we'll have someone to obsess over while we wait.

not Correa, just went to Astros #1

fwiw, Goldstein says he's a better prospect than Javier Baez for those wondering...

there's not much of an issue about correa actually sticking at SS unless he has another growth spurt in store

Buxton stays at #2

Appel not gonna get the money he wanted.

that was a very odd "interview."

Mariners take M. Zunino

Jeff Clement retrospectives being filed.

One of Zimmer, Appel and Gausman will be there for the Cubs...have to think they would select them over a hitter.

Or, perhaps not.

K. Gausman to Orioles at #4.

Appel must be thrilled with Boras right now.

"@TrippingOlney: IT SEEMS AS IF THE APPEL IS FALLING FAR FROM THE TREE”"

appel, zimmer, or almora...

i think appel's a bit overrated, but it'd be hard to argue with getting him in the system...esp with a 6 pick.

it is if he's still demanding $6 Million

this club just gave $7m to a nearly useless lefty who throws high 80s. i'm sure they could swing it.

there's no tax or risk of losing draft picks for that though.

Keep up.

one guy has skills. the other has a very expensive "cheap" price tag with very suspect stuff coming out of his arm.

The concern with Appel is that he doesn't dominate despite his stuff, though. There may be a reason people are backing off other than the price tag.

are you high right now?

If Appel is still demanding $6-$7M, it's possible the Cubs would have to pay a luxury tax and lose a draft pick and/or not have money for some draft picks they wanted later.

That would be very, very dumb.

None of this has anything to do with Concepcion.

are you high?

gerado concepcion is a waste of money and a roster spot even if it's somehow "cheap" to give him $7m.

whether they give a guy $5m or $8m in the 1st round it probably wouldnt make/break the team.

clever comeback

"None of this has anything to do with Concepcion."

you heard about the new CBA right?

anyway, I'm done with you, there was a reason I've been skipping over your comments the last 4 months.

yeah, it's about spending money.

yeah, i think they got the loot to pay a guy.

yeah, i dont think giving one guy $6-8m is going to screw up anything vs giving someone $5m.

Bonuses are paid in one year, Concepcion's is paid over 5 years.

By your logic, Concepcion is being paid what DeRosa was paid.

Math is hard.

Also the new CBA, look it up.

not really.

you seem to support flushing money down the toilet as long as it's on a reasonable payment plan.

i think anyone who would do something like giving g.concepcion the deal he got would get whoever the hell they wanted no matter what.

it's moot anyway.

Is Appel worth giving up a first round pick next year as well? Because his purported demands and what it'll take to sign the Cubs next 10 picks this year would cause that to happen.

if appell thinks the system is going to get better in 2013, more power to him.

So then you're suggesting that the Cubs take a guy knowing there's a greater than average risk of him not signing?

i have no reason to believe he wouldn't sign...and his stock is about as high as it's going to be.

"i have no reason to believe he wouldn't sign"

He's obviously dropping for a reason.

cuz he's gonna cost a lot of money.

even if he goes 10th he'll get paid like he went 1st.

And the marginal pain is going to shoot up since a teams overall budget decreases the later they pick.

yup.

doesn't necessarily make it a bad thing, especially if you have a good plan for going cheap later.

some teams are more than willing to look deeper for a deal in following rounds if they can get the guy they want or fall to them.

if everyone had to go cheap no one would draft appell...and what happens in this system when the next bryce harper shows up?

Kyle Zimmer to Royals at #5.

Cubs on the clock.

Keith Law says it's Almora.

and Callis says it's Almora to Cubs and Fried to Padres.

Almora it is.

Welcome new Cubbie!

Don't suck.

See everyone in 2 hours for the next Cubs picks.

~sigh~

lil carlos beltran...or lil ryan braun if you think he'll gain bulk...woo.

He does have a Lou Montanez about him...weak draft, safe pick, etc. But he is a great defensive outfielder and has decent speed, so he does have that as a fallback if he doesn't hit in pro ball.

The Cubs draft Almora.

I would have drafted that blonde in the blue dress (for those watching on mlb channel)

As Harry Caray would spell

Aromla better not stink.

Appel went 8th, so he's in the division (Pirates)

Interesting possible stellar top three for the Bucs with Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon, two previous high Pirate picks.

Rizzo rbi single in first, scores BJax who had walked.

  • I was asking how well Scherzer holds on runners.

BTW, your used underwear remark sounds rather specific. Please don't project. Thanks.

  • nothing gets you going like someone talking about lester, eh?

i hope you're on his payroll or he sends you used underwear or whatever you're into.

btw, he holds runners like shit. he does things with runners i've never seen another pitcher do in my life...even going back before i was born as far as i can tell. would you like to discuss it? that sounds like it could be educational and fun. hit me up, bruh.

  • last year they won 97...and came in 3rd in the division. crazy game on a year-to-year basis.

this year it's likely no one else in the division will win 90, though it's technically possible at this point.

no matter what, this is a special team, though...very well rounded...and should be mostly intact next year with a bonus schwarber. chapman may not be around, but whatever...rondon and crew are capable even if not on chapman's level.

  • It's August 26. Cubs with 14 game lead. And not for #1 draft pick.

Words I never thought I would type together.

  • When Scherzer is on his game, he might the the most dominant and intimidating pitcher. A couple of games he has pitched against the Cubs when he had his stuff, and his mound presence was just powerful.

billybucks 5 hours 32 min ago view
  • So are lack of chances due to the great pitching?

  • TLS watch: 0-4 with Iowa last night. Saving his pinch hits for September.

  • Objectively true. Scherzer's FIP is almost a half point higher than his ERA, mostly I deduce because his BABIP is .249 so something ridiculous like that. It's not like the guy can't be scored on, but when I watch him, I sometimes feel that he's the most in control of the game moving around him.

John Beasley 7 hours 8 min ago view
  • Certainly might be the hottest pitcher right now, but he's behind a few pitchers by most objective full season standards.

  • Well noted. You may also note that Lester's Career Playoff ERA is almost a full point lower, and he has a lower WHIP as well.

    Can't have everything, I guess.

  • i'm happy enough with the Lester signing, but Scherzer has more than earned the extra money so far. If he was in the rotation instead of Lester, this team would feel practically bulletproof to me.

Blaspheme maybe, but I think Scherzer is the best pitcher in the NL right now.
