Happy Draft Day!
The first round of the MLB draft happens today. It will last at least twice as long as necessary. Good news for us Cubs fans is they have the #6 pick, so we can get the first pick over quickly. I believe they do go through the supplemental round though today and that's two more picks (#43 and #56) for the Cubs at the end of the evening.
The buzz for the Cubs centers around the 2 high school position players, Carlos Correa ("He's another A-Rod!!!) and Albert Almora ("the Cubs would take him even if they had the #1 pick"). Huzzah! The latest mock drafts from Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus both had the Cubs taking Almora for what it's worth.
Other names loosely linked to the Cubs are Florida catcher Mike Zunino and LH prep pitcher Max Fried.
You can watch the fun on MLB.com.

"Good news for us Cubs fans is they have the #6 pick, so we can get this over with quickly."
no doubt.
well, that wrapped up a little quicker than i thought. bud selig makes a less-than-2-minute speech. neat.
this might happen in 30-45 minutes. everyone's on the clock for 5 minutes and i'm sure most (if not all) will stretch it out as long as possible for no other reason than "making TV."

I forgot about the supplemental picks. At least we'll have someone to obsess over while we wait.

not Correa, just went to Astros #1

there's not much of an issue about correa actually sticking at SS unless he has another growth spurt in store

Appel not gonna get the money he wanted.

One of Zimmer, Appel and Gausman will be there for the Cubs...have to think they would select them over a hitter.

Or, perhaps not.

K. Gausman to Orioles at #4.
Appel must be thrilled with Boras right now.

appel, zimmer, or almora...
i think appel's a bit overrated, but it'd be hard to argue with getting him in the system...esp with a 6 pick.

it is if he's still demanding $6 Million
Re: Happy Draft Day!
on Mon, 06/04/2012 - 6:41pm Permalink
this club just gave $7m to a nearly useless lefty who throws high 80s. i'm sure they could swing it.
Re: Happy Draft Day!
on Mon, 06/04/2012 - 6:42pm Permalink
there's no tax or risk of losing draft picks for that though.
Keep up.
Re: Happy Draft Day!

one guy has skills. the other has a very expensive "cheap" price tag with very suspect stuff coming out of his arm.
Re: Happy Draft Day!
on Mon, 06/04/2012 - 6:45pm Permalink
The concern with Appel is that he doesn't dominate despite his stuff, though. There may be a reason people are backing off other than the price tag.
Re: Happy Draft Day!
on Mon, 06/04/2012 - 6:45pm Permalink
are you high right now?
If Appel is still demanding $6-$7M, it's possible the Cubs would have to pay a luxury tax and lose a draft pick and/or not have money for some draft picks they wanted later.
That would be very, very dumb.
None of this has anything to do with Concepcion.

are you high?
gerado concepcion is a waste of money and a roster spot even if it's somehow "cheap" to give him $7m.
whether they give a guy $5m or $8m in the 1st round it probably wouldnt make/break the team.

clever comeback
"None of this has anything to do with Concepcion."
you heard about the new CBA right?
anyway, I'm done with you, there was a reason I've been skipping over your comments the last 4 months.
Re: Happy Draft Day!
on Mon, 06/04/2012 - 6:49pm Permalink
yeah, it's about spending money.
yeah, i think they got the loot to pay a guy.
yeah, i dont think giving one guy $6-8m is going to screw up anything vs giving someone $5m.
Re: Happy Draft Day!
on Mon, 06/04/2012 - 6:51pm Permalink
Bonuses are paid in one year, Concepcion's is paid over 5 years.
By your logic, Concepcion is being paid what DeRosa was paid.
Math is hard.
Also the new CBA, look it up.
Re: Happy Draft Day!
on Mon, 06/04/2012 - 6:53pm Permalink
not really.
you seem to support flushing money down the toilet as long as it's on a reasonable payment plan.
i think anyone who would do something like giving g.concepcion the deal he got would get whoever the hell they wanted no matter what.
it's moot anyway.
Re: Happy Draft Day!
on Mon, 06/04/2012 - 6:53pm Permalink
Is Appel worth giving up a first round pick next year as well? Because his purported demands and what it'll take to sign the Cubs next 10 picks this year would cause that to happen.
Re: Happy Draft Day!
on Mon, 06/04/2012 - 6:55pm Permalink
if appell thinks the system is going to get better in 2013, more power to him.
Re: Happy Draft Day!
on Mon, 06/04/2012 - 6:56pm Permalink
So then you're suggesting that the Cubs take a guy knowing there's a greater than average risk of him not signing?
Re: Happy Draft Day!
on Mon, 06/04/2012 - 6:57pm Permalink
i have no reason to believe he wouldn't sign...and his stock is about as high as it's going to be.
Re: Happy Draft Day!

"i have no reason to believe he wouldn't sign"
He's obviously dropping for a reason.
Re: Happy Draft Day!
on Mon, 06/04/2012 - 6:59pm Permalink
cuz he's gonna cost a lot of money.
even if he goes 10th he'll get paid like he went 1st.
Re: Happy Draft Day!
on Mon, 06/04/2012 - 7:02pm Permalink
And the marginal pain is going to shoot up since a teams overall budget decreases the later they pick.
Re: Happy Draft Day!
on Mon, 06/04/2012 - 7:06pm Permalink
yup.
doesn't necessarily make it a bad thing, especially if you have a good plan for going cheap later.
some teams are more than willing to look deeper for a deal in following rounds if they can get the guy they want or fall to them.
if everyone had to go cheap no one would draft appell...and what happens in this system when the next bryce harper shows up?

Re: Happy Draft Day!

He does have a Lou Montanez about him...weak draft, safe pick, etc. But he is a great defensive outfielder and has decent speed, so he does have that as a fallback if he doesn't hit in pro ball.

Interesting possible stellar top three for the Bucs with Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon, two previous high Pirate picks.
