Cubs @ Nationals: Lackey vs. Strasburg (Game 78)

CHC (39-38): RHP John Lackey (5-8, 4.74)
WAS (46-31): RHP Stephen Strasburg (8-2, 3.57)
First pitch: 6:05pmCST

Lackey had his second strong outing in a row on Friday in Miami (6 IP, 1 ER, 4 K, 2 BB) but ended up with the loss, thanks to the Cubs “offense,” which decided it was too hot and took the game off. Overall, the Nationals are 49-165 (.297) against him. Lind is 18-43.

Strasburg gave up 5 runs in as many innings but ended up with a no-decision against the Reds in his last outing. The Cubs are 27-94 (.287) against him. LaStella is 3-9 with a HR.

Lester (5-4) faces Ross (4-3) to end the series tomorrow at 3:05pmCST before we head to Cincinnati.

Go Cubs!

Good thing it was a slow Cubs news day while the site was under maintenance. No surprise given this drama free season.

this game is uglier than DFA'ing a guy with a .366 ob%...4 outs vs WAS, 5 runs in... 23 homers on the season vs lackey...so far

i guess someone should start a "about that montero thing" post. wonder how much he's worth in this market. someone will trade for him...cubs will probably have to eat some loot. he'd be a perfect fit in the AL for a mostly-DH spot while being a 2nd catcher.

with his lefty bat that's doing well and an ability to catch (though do nothing for the running game) i imagine some AL team out there would be in on him even if they only play him part time. it helps that after his DFA he handled his public statements with 1000x more class than he did last night talking about arrieta. arrieta was hella classy, himself. this "divorce" is going quite smooth in the public arena so far.

Stephen Vogt made it all the way to the Brewers on waivers. Left handed hitting catcher - without the receiving skills of Montero - but the ability to play first or corner OF. Making a lot less money. The bat was down this year. But Montero's was trending that way in my view. I guess we'll see if there's a market.

The Cubs could probably just eat Miguel Montero's salary and get a minor leaguer back in a trade, but if they want a veteran MLB player or pitcher in a salary "wash" there are several clubs in the American League with one or two under-performing veterans making similar salaries (single or combined) as Montero who could have some use for a back-up catcher and part-time LH DH. BALTIMORE ORIOLES: RHSP Ubaldo Jimenez Montero could DH with Mark Trumbo playing 1B and Trey Mancini playing LF LOS ANGELES ANGELS: INF Luis Valbuena Montero could DH with Luis Pujols playing 1B OAKLAND ATHLETICS: OF Matt Joyce & RHRP John Axford Montero could DH with Matt Olson playing RF SEATTLE MARINERS: RHSP Yovani Gallardo Montero could be platoon DH with Danny Valencia if Nelson Cruz plays OF TORONTO BLUE JAYS: LHSP Francisco Liriano Montero could be Russell Martin's back-up (Jays currently have the worst back-up catcher in MLB), but the Jays would probably want a BOR SP back in the deal to replace Liriano (perhaps Brett Anderson or Aaron Brooks for Luke Maile as a second section of the trade). The Cubs will have the full seven days of the DFA to trade Montero since Outright Assignment Waivers are not in play here and thus would not need to be requested after five days. (Players cannot be traded while they are on waivers). Release Waivers do not need to be requested until after the full seven days of the DFA, if the Cubs are unable to trade Montero and decide to just give him his outright release.

TOR is very much in play with their "automatic out" backup C and their desire to get another left handed bat. it'll be interesting to see if they want to save money (doubt it) and whether they want obtain a minor league kid or a MLB-ready dude...or if they have much leverage in the matter in the market for montero.

Events like this really call attention to how much lying is expected in baseball. When player's are frustrated--with themselves, with the team, with the lies they know they are going to have to tell reporters after the game ("It's my job to control the running game even when we all know almost anyone can steal on Arrieta and we all already know I have no arm"), and maybe with the lies they have to tell themselves in order to keep playing ("I am still good at things like throwing to the bases")--it seems unfair to ask them to come out and tell the selfless lie. But I suspect there's more to this story than just this incident.

Yup. To say the same thing in more words - "Some days pitchers are fast to the plate, some days not. Some days Catchers have a quick release, some days not. The main thing is our responsibility as a team to adjust & improvise to whatever the current situation might be. I could have displayed more leadership in creating adjustments."

#That's2017Cub: KB severely sprains right ankle stepping on base while catching routine pop up [update: official word is mild to moderate sprain, no decision on whether he's going on the DL yet]

Bizarre end to the MIL-CIN game. 9th inning, MIL down a run, first and third with one out, 0-2 count...and they try a double steal. Strike 'em out, throw 'em out at 2B to end the game. weird, but we'll take it. Win tomorrow and we could be tied for first! Hey, why not?!

Carrie Muskat‏ @CarrieMuskat X-rays of Bryant's right ankle were negative. #Cubs aren't sure if he'll need to go on DL. Won't play Thursday

Does anyone know what injuries Carlos Sepulveda and D.J. Wilson have?

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be savored...unedited. 40 years, wow.
