Cubs @ Braves: Montgomery vs Dickey (Game 94)

ATL (45-47): RHP R.A. Dickey (6-5, 4.08)
First pitch: 11:10amCST

Montgomery gave up 4 ER in 4.1 innings for a no-decision in Baltimore on Friday. He's never faced Atlanta, but overall this group is 2-13 against him. Kemp and Suzuki have the hits. Montgomery is 1-3 with a 5.77 in seven starts this season.Dickey held the D’Backs to 1 run in 6 innings but ended up with a no-decision his last time out. He’s 5-1 with a 3.13 at SunTrust. Only Heyward (5-19), Jay (3-9), and Zobrist (6-39, HR) have faced him. He’s 0-1 with a 7.27 ERA in two career starts against the Cubs.

Tomorrow is a day off, then we open against the Cards on Friday at Wrigley at 1:20pm CST, with Arrieta (9-7) and Martinez (6-8) taking the mound.

Go Cubs!

Comments

I just signed up for the first time to be able to make comments and I did it for one reason. The reason is I have a question for Arizona Phil, the authority on these types of matters. I noticed Armando Rivera was just put on the 60 day disabled list and has not pitched this year. Being a rule 5 pick I know there is some sort of rule on how long a player picked has to be on the active roster. Arizona Phil, what is the possibilty the Cubs can get him back? What has to happen for that to happen? I was a little surprised the Cubs didn't protect him and you can never have enough bullpen arms. Thanks.

Phil will answer better than I will, but I'll throw this in anyway. The Braves can keep him on the DL all season, should the choose. The specifications don't really change much. The only difference would be that, in 2018, Rivero would have to stay on the Braves roster until he has had 90 Days on the 25 man roster. Then, they could farm him out. The Atlanta question. Is Rivero worth still keeping. The Chicago question? If offered back, is Rivero worth $50,000?

I am curious to see Baez swing against knuckleballs...  Hope he double-tied his laces...

For those not watching, Bryant left the game after sliding head-first into third base.  He seems to have bent maybe his fourth and fifth finger on his left hand awkwardly when it slid into the third baseman's foot.

Word is KB has a sprained left pinky, x-rays were negative and he's day-to-day. Seems like a bullet has been dodged so far. And KB's replacement, TLS, just goes yard.

Wondering why Joe did not try a squeeze attempt with Addy on 3rd, 1 out, a slow pitcher, and Almora up?

since the break the cubs just keep hitting homers. playing against these 2 crap teams helps, but whatever...i'll take it.

Perhaps Monty will piggyback for Lackey's starts like he did for Butler -- that worked for a couple wins. Also, road trip sweeps do not suck - go Pirates!

I realize there is no such thing as momentum in baseball, but Addy's 9th inning game-winning HR in the first game of the trip really changed what could have been a very negative narrative to "Hey, we got Quintana!"

Interesting Games Coming: Cards for 3 Sox for 4 Brewers for 3 in Wrigley North Then D-Backs for 3 and "The Dusty's" for 3 to start off August (Home) What's your guesses for the 16-game stretch?

Here's my take on that stretch: 2-1 Cards 2-2 Sox 3-0 Brewers 1-2 Dbacks 2-1 Nats So 10-6. Like you point out, even 8-8 leaves us in good shape, but as long as we win the series against the Brew crew. Also, I meant to post this at the all star break, but my overzealous prediction is we end up winning 92 games and the division. So we were 43-45 at the break, which means we would have to play 49-25 since the all star break. With this start to the second half, I think it's totally doable, as we'd have to go 43-25 the rest of the way. So that's a .632 winning percentage the rest of the way. I think it's possible!

There's no good time for an injury, but sitting Bryant on Friday and Saturday should be no big loss. He has terrible numbers against Martinez and Wainwright.

6 wins in a row. 1.5 games back. cubs off today (7/20) and brewers have an early day game. cubs game on friday vs STL is a day game (boo).

Pirates take lead over the Brewers in the bottom of the 5th...3-2 Buccos! edit: Make that 4-2 one batter later, and with another runner in scoring position.

And now I'm afraid of the Pirates. Great end to the Cards game -- Mets win when Rosenthal fails to cover first on a grounder. McCarver goes ballistic: "You've gotta get over there!!!"

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.
