Blue Jays @ Cubs: Happ vs Arrieta (Game 121)

TOR (59-62): LHP J. A. Happ (6-8, 3.63)
CHC (63-57): RHP Jake Arrieta (12-8, 3.73)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

The Cubs and Jays have only played four series (2003, '05, '08, and '14). This will be the second appearance by the Jays at Wrigley, other than 2005—a rare sighting, indeed. The Jays lead the franchise matchup 8-4.

Arrieta won in AZ on Sunday, holding the D’backs to 1 ER over 6 innings. He’s 3-2 with a 3.47 at Wrigley this season. These Jays are 11-63 (.175) against him. Pillar is 3-3.

J. A. Happ is 3-0 with a 1.45 in the month of August, including six innings of one-run ball against the Pirates his last time out. He’s 3-3 with a 3.67 on the road this season. Overall, the Cubs are 21-62 (.339) against him. Rizzo is 5-8 with a HR.

There are conflicting reports about J. A.'s relationship to our Ian, but it appears that there is none. If there is, I'm sure we'll hear all about it.

Toronto is in last place in the AL East; meanwhile, the Cubs cling to a tenuous one-game lead. Buckle up.

It’s Quintana (7-10) and Tepesch (1-2) tomorrow at the same time.

Go Cubs!

I wonder what the Cubs record is in weekday afternoon games at Wrigley this year. I imagine it's not very good.

Schwarber now with 20 HR and 3 straight games with an OF assist! Since the break, in 97 PA: .381 OBP, .960 OPS. Keep it going, Schwarbs!

Jon Lester (left shoulder fatigue) and Justin Grimm (right finger infection) to the 10-day DL, and Cubs recall Felix Pena and Rob Zastryzny from Iowa.

Hopefully Stropy is ok. The only reasonable explanation for using Grimm in that situation yesterday was giving him a clean inning with bottom of order approaching. Strop probably would pitch the 8th if the game was still tied. Doing it the other way around risks having Grimm or Rondon against Votto/Duvall, which is a recipe for failure. Really shouldn't expect Grimm to be overmatched when the next 4 hitters were Suarez, Gennett, Ervin, and Turner.

Sounds like you were yearning for Strop at 2:27 (EDT) Friday afternoon. I wonder how you felt three hours later. Am I the only one who can't stand Grimm OR Strop? They're the model of what you don't want in an eighth-inning reliever--someone who can't throw a fastball dependably for a strike.

And Miggy finally throws out a base stealer at Wrigley this year - during an Arrieta start no less.

I'll give the Cubs relief corp credit - they are extremely consistent with respect to the 8th inning. How about a four out save for Davis?

Probably should give Davis some 4-5 out saves down the stretch to prepare for the postseason. There has been many long periods this season where he hasn't pitched, so it's not like it will be too many innings for him. Joe probably didn't do it today because pitcher's spot would potentially be reached in the 8th and it was.

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.

he's hugging canario in the dugout cuz morel will shrivel up and die if he doesn't hug at least a dozen people a day.

    and morel is injured...nice.

morel trying to play LF from 3rd...runs into canario while leaping and comes down ribs/arm-first.

hopefully he sticks around to finish this terrible game, or at least is going to avoid the IL.
