Cubs @ Pirates: Arrieta vs Kuhl (Game 137)

CHC (75-61): RHP Jake Arrieta (14-8, 3.36)
PIT (65-72): RHP Chad Kuhl (6-10, 4.54)
First pitch: 3:05pmCST

Arrieta went 4-1 with a 1.21 in August,  to win the NL Pitcher of the Month accolades. Welcome back, Jake! His last outing was 6 scoreless against Kuhl and these Pirates on Tuesday in Pittsburgh.

He’s 1-2 with a 3.27 in four starts against the Pirates this season. Overall, they are 66-292 (.226) against him. Rodriguez is 4-9 with a HR.

Kuhl gave up 3 ER in 5.1 in the loss to the Cubs last week. He’s 4-5 with a 4.86 at home this season. He’s 0-2 with an 11.70 ERA in three starts against the Cubs this season. For their careers, these Cubs are 31-76 (.408) against him. Zobrist (4-6, 2 HR), Rizzo (6-12, HR), and Heyward (6-10, HR) all hit him well.

Tomorrow it’s Hendricks (6-4) and Brault (0-0) at 6:05pmCST.

Go Cubs!

Javy's magic is so strong he reflects concussion waves with a single eyeball. Neat. El Mago FTW.

While Seth Frankoff (by Seattle) and Jack Leathersich (by Pittsburgh) were likely claimed off Outright Assignment Waivers, Jacob Hannemann was likely claimed off Trade Assignment Waivers by the Mariners (there would have been no reason for the Cubs to place Hannemann on Outright Assignment Waivers on Saturday) because he was probably the PTBNL in the Leonys Martin deal, and if the Mariners could win the waiver claim they could get him sooner rather than later. (All three of the Cubs claimed off waivers today had to have been placed on waivers on Saturday for the waiver claiming period to end today  -- at 1 PM Eastern -- and there would have been no reason for the Cubs to put Hannemann on waivers on Saturday if it wasn't that they were trying to get him through Trade Waivers).

If another club had won the claim the Cubs would have just pulled Hannemann back off waivers (Trade Assignment Waivers can be revoked/withdrawn by a club if the player is claimed, while Outright Assignment Waivers are irrevocable) and then the Cubs would have just sent him to the Mariners after the conclusion of the MLB regular season when waivers would not be required.

BTW, Hannemann was in the Iowa Cubs starting lineup today (playing CF), but was pulled from the game after the top of the 1st inning.

C-1B Taylor Davis will reportedly get called-up tomorrow and take Hannemann's place on the Cubs MLB 40-man roster, providing a RH bat off the bench while Addison Russell and Willson Contreras are on the DL. T. Davis was already "on the bubble" to get added to the 40 either in September or after the season since he is eligible to be a minor league 6YFA post-2017 and the only way the Cubs can be sure to retain him beyond this season is by placing him on the 40-man roster. (Alex Avila and Rene Rivera are both free-agents post-2017, and so T. Davis will likely go into the off season as the Cubs #3 catcher). .

It seems that whenever a Cub pitcher wins NL Pitcher of the Month, his next start is a clunker. But, hey, it's always fun to strike out Sean Rodriguez. With Zobrist and Freeman in the lineup, Jake needs to hold them to only 2 runs.

...and jake arrieta landed funny on the mound. he's in obvious pain. he tried to warm up after being checked by the trainer and couldn't finish his throwing motion before crumpling a bit in pain.

Adam Berry‏ @adamdberry Jake Arrieta clearly favoring his right hamstring. Tried to throw a warmup pitch, couldn't, limped off the field. Justin Grimm now pitching. Chicago Cubs @Cubs Jake Arrieta leaves today's game in the 3rd inning with an apparent right leg injury.

l.martin is pitching for the cubs. welcome to the cubs, now go pitch 0.2ip as a debut. he's throwing 90-91mph with a mid/high 70s changeup and decent control over both. neat. too bad it's not effective.

Post game Mark Grote saying Arrieta probable cramp and won't miss a start. He wasn't limping in the locker room after the game. Was examined by Pirates MD. Of course tomorrow, if still sore, might lead to an MRI.

Cubs scoreless in the 16 innings since Javy left the game yesterday -- and they weren't exactly facing Kershaw and Scherzer. I think the starters they faced the last 2 days were Chris Crap and Cedric Crap, Jr. Get well soon, Javy.

If the Cubs want to send Willson Contreras on a minor league rehab assignment (even if it's just to DH), remember that it - IS - OK (although it might not seem fair) to send an MLB player on an injury rehab assignment to a minor league team that is participating in post-season playoffs. So Contreras could go to Myrtle Beach or Eugene in a few days and help win the boys win a championship!

Otherwise he can go to AZ Instructs in a couple of weeks and get some reps in Mesa.

I hereby invoke the 10+ Rule -- given that the Pirates scored 10+ runs today, they must score one or fewer tomorrow. There. That's done.

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.
