Dodgers @ Cubs: Wood vs Arrieta (NLCS Game 4)

LAD (3-0): LHP Alex Wood
CHC (0-3): RHP Jake Arrieta
First pitch: 8:01pmCST (TBS)

“Remember when we got swept in the NLCS?”
“Which time?”

Yeah, it’s the bad. After putting together a pretty solid second half and emerging from the NLCS in dramatic fashion, the Cubs are on the brink of elimination. This time is actually worse since 2015 came out of nowhere. We know this team is championship caliber; they just aren't playing like it. Of course, they are 4-0 in their last four elimination games, but luck only gets you so far, especially with a bullpen like this one.

Arrieta takes the mound for the Cubs, in what very likely could be his last with the team. Take a good look, my friends, and remember all of the good times because they were really good.

Jake took the loss against the Nationals in Game Four, giving up an unearned run in four innings and throwing 90 pitches. He lost to the Dodgers in LA in May (6 IP, 4 Er, 9 K, 1 BB). For their careers, the Dodgers are 15-88 (.170) against him—a no-hitter tends to do that to the batting average.

Alex Wood (16-3, 2.72 for the season) goes for the Dodgers. He beat the Cubs in May, going 5 scoreless. Overall, the Cubs are 14-63 (.222) against him. Bryant is 3-8 with a HR. The Dodgers haven’t needed Wood in the playoffs, so this will be his first appearance since Sept. 26.

In case you need a history lesson: the only team to ever come back from a 3-0 deficient was the 2004 Red Sox against the Yankees in the ALCS, the team led by one Theo Epstein. I hope they break out the Mama Juana because this team needs a drink.

Go Cubs!

For me, Jake will alway represent the inflection point for these Cubs. When he became great in the 2nd half of 2015, the Cubs took off and headed to the playoffs and never looked back. He continued to be great in the first half of 2016, and the Cubs followed his lead. For those 2 half-seasons, a win was expected every time he pitched, and he almost always delivered. He was one of the first to talk with confidence and back it up. I expect he will go, and he will be missed. Thanks Jake -- it has been a great ride.

It will be smart but sad to see him go. Cubs got his best years and I will be happy to see some other team pay for those. Cubs already have Lester, not wise to have a second high dollar, aging pitcher entering their decline years on the payroll. That being said, big thanks to Jake for a spectacular Cubs career. Let's cap it off with a good one tonight.

Back in August 2015 we were up in Central & Northern California for about three weeks and we spent about ten days in San Francisco, and while we were there we saw the Cubs-Giants three-game series. We left San Francisco Sunday morning for the long drive home, and on our way back to Arizona we stopped off at Dodger Stadium for a Sunday afternoon ESPN game (5 PM start) and watched Jake Arrieta throw a no-hitter, the first MLB no-hitter I ever saw in person. What a day that was! We'll never forget it. It was a great way to end a vacation. And so then after the game we got back in the car and drove to Phoenix, getting home at about 3 AM. And that no-hitter was a Jake Arrieta vs Alex Wood match-up, too, just like tonight's game.

If this is indeed the last game of the season, and/or the last game with Arrieta playing in a Cubs uniform, then you should spend it with friends in Parachat.  Hopefully it is neither. Not just yet.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be savored...unedited. 40 years, wow.
