Bauer gave up 2 ER in 3.2 innings and took the loss in Game Two. He gave up a Rizzo RBI double in the 1st and a Schwarber RBI single in the 3rd. He was pulled in the third after giving up a walk and a single, despite inducing a double play.

Strat-o-matic outcome, game 5 (So we got that going for us, which is nice): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X48G7Y0VWW4&list=RDX48G7Y0VWW4
Game 5 Cleveland 0 3 0 Chicago 2 6 0 Chicago kept the dream alive thanks to a gem from Jon Lester. He limited Cleveland to three hits, exacting revenge on Corey Kluber for the result in Game 1. In the bottom of the second, Ben Zobrist scored the only run Chicago would need with a booming solo shot to lead off the inning. Chicago got some insurance in the bottom of the fourth as Addison Russell brought home Javier Baez with a triple. Just goes to show, the only way you can beat Andrew Miller is to not let him enter the game.
http://www.strat-o-matic.com/community/announcements/2016-world-series-… (warning: game 6 looks more like game 4; could the Schwarber-factor be difficult to account for?)

Another stab at it: Fowler CF, Bryant 3B, Rizzo 1B, Zobrist 2B, Soler LF, Coghlan or Heyward RF, Russell SS, Ross C, Lester You should be fined if you throw Baez a pitch in the strike zone at this point.

Please win tonight. It would really suck to have this wonderful season end by getting swept at Wrigley.

Cubs in mortal danger of crashing out of post-season for the 8th consecutive time on a three-game skid (ok, last year was four games, but whatever). That would amount to an 0-25 record in what might be considered must-win games. I won't post the cumulative run differential in those games (it's disturbing). This year's team has proven my doom-and-gloom theories wrong at many turns, so I won't be surprised if they spoil this trend. Then again, as a doom-and-gloom veteran, I won't be surprised if they don't. Either way, great group of guys, lots of fun memories, and a proud legacy they can actually build on. They were the best regular season team and the Indians have been the best post-season team. That's life in the big city.

Enjoy this tonight. Win or lose, it has been a great season and this is just the beginning.

Odd, but I'm not worried. Been a great season, we've been off a few games (it happens) but I have no hesitation thinking we could still win this. Either way the future looks bright. Go Lester!

I am so happy for Wayne Messmer right now.  Go Cubs.  Come hang out in Parachat.

I think this series goes 7. Win tonight. I think we get to Tomlin facing him a 2nd time. Game 7 is a tossup and 1 run could be enough to win. Go Cubs! #FlyTheW

NEAT.

This was the third time that the Cubs have won a World Series game at Wrigley Field in their history.

Hate to be negative Nelly after that win, but I don't see how Baez should be in the starting lineup Wednesday. The Indians have exposed him as unable to hit at this level. PS- I saw a souvenir stand set up selling Cubs gear, W flags and whatnot. The odd thing is, this is Fort Wayne, Indiana, 176 miles from Wrigley Field.

Agreed. The Injuns will try to run on Jake -- Javy's tagging ability could make a difference. Smoltz was marveling at his tagging talent. At some point, your brain has to tell your eyes: if the count is 0-2, 1-2, or even 2-2, the next pitch is very unlikely to be in the strike zone. Don't swing. To quote The Donald: What have you got to lose?

Joe West will be the home plate umpire in Game #6. Good luck, Jake. You'll need it.

Absolutely zero buzz about tonight's Bears game. At home for MNF, and...nothing. Not really a surprise, given their continued repulsive awfulness, but it's weird.

I wish I had said this yesterday, I've been thinking it for a few weeks. But these no-name Bear draftees and otherwise-acquirees can play. They can hit, they can get there on time. This is not your father's Oldsmobile. (Your father is Jerry Angelo.) Also, something very crisp about the way they perform, offense and defense. I think the consultants are intended to look for the cause of a rash of "soft-tissue" injuries.

Actually, they were mentioned on WSCR this morning. They were commenting on the outside consultant hired to evaluate the replacement of everyone associated with the team not named McCaskey.

contreras will catch game 6 (and probably game 7)...lester available out of the pen in the CLE series.

If Lester were to come into Game #6 and/or Game #7 out of the bullpen, will David Ross have to be the catcher? In other words, will Maddon intentionally keep Ross in reserve on the bench and not use him unless and until Lester is called upon to work out of the pen?

We did see Contreras catch (a little of) Lester in the final regular season game, or perhaps the one before since I recall it being at Wrigley. I would venture to guess that it's certainly not a necessity that Ross be available to catch Lester, but in an elimination game, I imagine that Joe's preference would be to not tinker with the formula more than necessary.

If Lester comes in, it will be a high leverage situation. If high leverage situation you want him with maximum chance to succeed, which means Ross as catcher. Only exception I can think of is if Joe brings Lester in specifically to face one batter, and with nobody on base.

Using a starting pitcher out of the bullpen makes sense if you don't have enough effective relievers or if you have reason to think that starting pitcher will be nearly untouchable. I don't think the Cubs are in that situation. Montgomery has been good, Edwards is extremely hard to hit, and Strop can be quite effective. Meanwhile, Lester has been great but not overwhelming, and has he ever made a relief appearance? Plus I don't think there is *any* chance you bring him in with any runners on, which significantly cuts into the situations where you would use him.

well I'd definitely only use him to start an inning, but there's no one in the pen beyond Chapman that been really dominating imo that I trust. And judging by Chapman going 2.2 IP in Game 5, I think Maddon mostly feels the same. Edwards, Wood, Grimm and Strop have all been effective but not particularly dominant. And I don't see Rondon getting in another game unless it's mop-up work.

I personally think Lester has been pretty great other than the first inning of Game 1 with the walks and the swunt (bad pitch to Perez on that HR too, thought the HR to Ramirez was just good hitting).  Indians are doing more damage than good trying to steal bases at this point, so other than Rajai Davis I welcome their attempts to try and steal.

Regardless, those are the 3 guys I completely trust at this point...but I'm not making the moves. I don't think Francona really wants to use anyone but Kluber, Allen and Miller at this point if he could. Shaw's been okay, but seems like we could get to him. Tomlin is going to throw 90% breaking balls today and have a super-short leash unless he gets lucky again. Just hope we get the Arrieta that throws strikes today.

Fowler, Schwarber, Bryant, Rizzo, Zobrist, Russell, Contreras, Heyward and Baez tonight

vs.

Santana, Kipnis, Lindor, Napoli, Ramirez, Chisenhall, Crisp, Naquin, and Perez

This can wait a few days, but: I assume next year it's: Zobrist RF, Schwarber LF, Bryant 3B, Rizzo 1B, then some order of Russell SS, Contreras C, Baez 2B and Heyward/Almora CF? If they want both Schwarber and Zobrist in the lineup, I assume Heyward moves to CF? Barring injury -- not a lot of ABs for Soler?

Childersb3: Miguel Cruz walked six in 1.2 IP in his last start, so I guess he is improving. Wilme Mora also walked six in one of his appearances a week or two ago, and one or two others have walked five. I don't know what would be the most I have ever seen a pitcher throw in a game out here, because the manager / pitching coach usually gets the pitcher out of the game if it gets too ridiculous.

As for the attendance, probably about 20 of the 25 were early arrivals for the Savannah Bananas game who came over to Field # 1 to see what was going on, and once they saw all the bases on balls (12 walks by Cubs pitchers and four by Angels pitchers) they ran away screaming. I'm used to it so it didn't bother me that much.

Jed has added Teheran, Tyranski, Kissaki, and now Straily and Nico Zeglin today.

Zeglin is 24 yrs old. Pitched well at Long Beach St in '23 and well in some Indy Ball.

They also added Reilly and Viets in late ST.

Have to search for MiLB arm depth anywhere you can and at all times!!!

    25 in Attendance!!!

Phil, is that a backfield record?

Also, 6 BBs for Cruz in 2 IP. What's the most walks you've seen in one EXT ST outing that you can recall?

He has a pulse. Apparently that’s the only requirement at this point.

The great thing about going to live sports events is you don't know if you're going to see something historic. Today I went to the Cub game, after putting the liner back in my coat and fishing my Cubs knit hat out of the closet. I needed all that- my seats are in the upper deck, left, so the east wind was in my face. Both teams failed to capitalize on good situations, but both starters did a good job to accomplish this. So, we go to the bottom of the sixth inning. The Cubs tie it up, and then Pete Crow-Armstrong comes up. We all know he would still be in AAA if not for injuries, and future Hall-of-Famer Justin Verlander absolutely carved up the young fellow up in his first two plate appearances. So this time he hits a fly ball. The wind was blowing in and had suppressed several strong fly balls- including a rocket off Altuve's bat that Canario hauled in (does anybody else remind me of Jorge Soler?) , but the ball kept carrying and carrying. 107mph, legit angle and carry. The crowd went nuts, the dugout went nuts. Maybe, just maybe, I saw the first homer from a long-term Cub.

Which was my original premise. They won the trades but lost their souls. They no longer employ the Cardinal way which had been so successful for so long.

  • crunch (view)

STL traded away a lot of minor league talent that went on to do nothing in the arenado + goldschmidt trades.  neither guy blocked any of their minor league talent in the pipeline, too.  that's ideal places to add talent.

Natural cycle of baseball. Pitching makes adjustments in approach to counter a hot young rookie. Now it’s time for Busch and his coaches to counter those adjustments. Busch is very good and will figure it out, I think sooner than later.

In 2020, the pandemic year and the year before they acquired Arenado, the Cardinals finished second and were a playoff team. Of the 12 batters with 100 plate appearances, 8 of them were home grown. Every member of the starting rotation (if you include Wainwright) and all but one of the significant relievers were home grown. While there have been a relative handful of very good trades interspersed which have been mentioned, player development had been their predominant pattern for decades - ever since I became an aware fan in the ‘70’s

The Arenado deal was not a deal made out of dire need or desperation. It was a splashy, headline making deal for a perennial playoff team intended to be the one piece that brought the Cardinals from a very good team to a World Series contender. They have continued to wheel and deal and have been in a slide ever since. I stand by my supposition that that deal marked a notable turning point within the organization. They broke what had been a very successful formula for a very long time.
