Here I am, so excited to actually sit down and watch the game, that I totally forgot to post the lineups. The Braves come to town with their rookie sensation Jeff Francoeur, who has yet to draw an unintentional walk. I'm going to go out on a limb and say he'll get at least one against the Cubs. The Cubs have to win. Every day, they have to win if they thingk they have a chance at the playoffs (which they don't). But, if they don't win every day (which they won't) I'm going to do my best to be like Al. Which is not so say I'm going to ignore the myriad problems with this team, but rather that I will do my best to pay attention to the positive things that have happened, are happening, and will continue to happen between now and the end of March.

This is probably the 2nd regular season game since 2003 that I honestly don't give a shit about (Final Sunday last year being the first)...it's nice not to be tied down to scoreboard watching or in front of the tv for 6 more weeks. Bring on 2006.

Maybe Kerry Wood will do the smart thing and go ahead and schedule his shoulder cleanout surgery for sometime this or next week. Then again the Cubs brass will probably be stupid and not allow this to happen until the math people say the Cubs have no possible chance to advance to the playoffs.

I couldn't agree more with Adam's post. Today I felt reborn.... it felt so good to just let it go, get this monkey of a cubs season off my back. This team has been like a horrible poker hand and I'm folding. Bring on the offseason, bring on change, bring on next year.

Thanks to Mannytrillo's tickets I got to see the game. What can I say -- the seats were nice and the guy I went with won one of the Maddux gloves. I have to admit that I was willing Barrett to try to score but he was out by a mile. I had fun, but my winning streak at Wrigley came to an end. Come to think of it all the home teams at all the baseball games I went to on this visit to Chicago lost. Don't tell them. Manny, your season tickets are awesome though. Lucky guy.

Good analogy? If so, I thank you. It's fish like you who allow for even fundamentally poor poker players like myself to remain profitable. You may fault yourself for not folding earlier (dumping last year contracts for 2006 players), or raising and giving yourself a chance to drive someone else out of the pot. But instead you played weak passive, limping and calling. And what do you hold? Nothing but a gutshot straight draw with one to go. Not to mention that there's already 3 clubs and a pair on the board. And yes that is STL representing the boat and HOU representing the flush. So you called off your chips with a draw for the third best hand. But what's worse is now that you're already all-in (past the trade deadline) you're going to fold when it's free to see a showdown? High quality. Are there any casinos on the North Side? Oh and go Braves. Hopefully we can get in and out of town before Dusty's vibes rub off on the youngsters.

Agree... I have now stopped TiVo'ing the games as I dont really care and it is too painful to watch. I already know the outcome of this year :(... well, theres always next year! :)

I said yesterday I thought the Cubs would go after a high profile SS for next season and let Nomar go somewhere else.....I thought that high profile star would be Neifi Perez (sarcasm alert for those who never can see it).... This in the Sun Times today "Chances are, the Cubs will re-sign Perez for 2006 and not Garciaparra, whose health issues make him too big of a risk."

Trade Patterson, Wood Holly and $$ for Damon Uh....that might be a little hard to work out at the end of August with Boston heading towards the playoffs. You know he's a FA after the season, right? You usually don't have to give up other players to get those. But you never know, the Cubs organization could yet figure out a new way to give away their future.

It's all well and good to look at what someone like Dontrelle Willis is doing now and say "the Cubs should have kept him," but he was a throw-in in a trade that netted the Cubs a solid three-year run of Matt Clement in the rotation. Look back at the coverage of the trade -- Willis was lumped in with the other two minor leaguers (Jose Cueto and Ryan Jorgensen) that the Cubs sent along with Tavarez to Florida. I would bet that very few people, even those in the Florida organization, expected him to be the key to that trade.

Nice to know some people noticed. I've been working on a kinder, and gentler version of samclyatt in order to help me deal with the insanity of . . . . oops, I almost blew it right from the start. Silly me. I also have figured out that there is more action on the blogsites than on the field from most of the players these days. I know there is more passion on the blogsites than the whole collective Cub team has displayed since about two weeks after the second half started. I expressed my doubts about this team early on, but in deference to those who were holding out some hope that it might possibly be the Chinese Year of the Magician, and that these guys would be able to pull a rabbit out of the hat, I postponed my annual playing of TAPS until now. Enough is enough. IMO anyone who still believes the Cubs will win the wild card has the faith of Abraham, the Old Testament patriarch, of whom the Bible says, "against hope, he believed in hope, and it was credited to him for righteousness." God Bless them. I'm not that strong in my faith in this team. I hope Hendry makes liberal use of the few opportunities he has to pick up some bargains. Rusch, Williams, Walker, Burnitz, Perez, Macias, maybe Dempster are the 'usual' candidates if I were in his place, but most of you know that I have always said I would trade virtually anybody; so, if an opportunity did come along, I would not hesitate to unload virtually anybody. It just depends on what is available in return. For next year, we have to get stronger up the middle. That might be a shopworn and tired mantra, but it is the tried and true method of building a team. When your catcher doesn't know what to do in a rundown, and your pitchers are either unable to or just refuse to cover first base, and your shortstop can't play because he is hurt, and your backup shortstop cannot hit for a sustained period of time, and your second baseman is hurt, and your backup second baseman is also your backup shortstop, and your centerfielder is Corey Patterson, then I rest my case about needing more strength up the middle. When you couple that with the absolutely horrendous performance of the bullpen in critical situations throughout the season, the blowing of TAPS was, as suggested by Mr. Whipple a few weeks overdue. But, again, I'm trying to be Mr. Sensitivity now.

re: perez being resigned next year and not nomar i would assume that neifi would be used as the utility guy though...right? seriously though, there's no way they can have him come in as the starting shortstop. i have no problem with neifi on my team, as long as he's getting 200 ABs or less. he can play the 3 infield positions relatively well and isn't a terrible bench bat. if he's back though, several things have to happen: - another starting, you know, good shortstop has to be here (be it nomar, furcal or someone via trade) - jose macias has to be gone. can't afford both of them on a 13 man hitting staff. - this means that fontenot/cedeno or both are probably here to save money on your bench to hire you know, outfielders who can hit. as opposed to this year's crew.

I am surprised no one is talking about Baker's post game comments about why Barrett was sent home. Basically saying we had to send Barrett because Corey was up to bat next. Those comments by Baker go back to the heart of the matter of why he is a poor manager. If you have no confidence in Patterson then why do you continue to put him in the starting lineup? How about pinch hitting for him so you dont have to send the runner, ever thought of that? Naw, screw it, send the runner, blame it on Patterson. Its brilliant leadership. "Sometimes you've got to send him even though you know the chance of him being out is good," Baker said. You send a runner when the chances of him being safe are good. Examples of what Baker is saying is that you sometimes send a runner on shallow popflys to the SS, where the chance of him being out at home is good. Or running on Jim Edmonds or Wily Taveras on shallow singles to CF where the chance of the runner being out is good. No runner should ever be thrown out by 40 feet. That is not taking chances. That is stupidity.

I will give the Cubs franchise - when they crumble, they do it with style and flair. It is Shakespearean tragic to see how badly this season is winding down. I am almost speechless and stunned into silence. At this point, I grow concerned about the mental scaring that is being left on the impressionable youth (notice I didn't mention good and youth in the same sentence about the Cubs, that would be blog suicide). Of course, I except Carlos from the scaring exercise - that boy is a madman. So I will leave it to one of the great songwriters from my youth: Meet the new boss, same as old boss. I say fire em all and start completely from scratch. It sure as hell would be more interesting that what Hendry will sell us in 2006.

I personally thought it was a horrible decision by Speier, but Brenly backed it up. Surprised me. I'm not surprised to hear Dusty defend Speier, though. That's really what it is. In some quarters, backing up your staff is considered good leadership.

No good reason to pick apart Dusty's comments. His actions are enough fodder to keep us busy until spring training. The real problem is how Hendry approaches the offseason and what he sees as the solution to righting the ship for 2006 & out. Again, I am no longer bullish on this franchises apptitude and ability to build a consistent winner. Again, I say fire em all, gut the strcuture, throw away the debris and start over.

    Childersb3: Miguel Cruz walked six in 1.2 IP in his last start, so I guess he is improving. Wilme Mora also walked six in one of his appearances a week or two ago, and one or two others have walked five. I don't know what would be the most I have ever seen a pitcher throw in a game out here, because the manager / pitching coach usually gets the pitcher out of the game if it gets too ridiculous. 

    As for the attendance, probably about 20 of the 25 were early arrivals for the Savannah Bananas game who came over to Field # 1 to see what was going on, and once they saw all the bases on balls (12 walks by Cubs pitchers and four by Angels pitchers) they ran away screaming. I'm used to it so it didn't bother me that much.

    Jed has added Teheran, Tyranski, Kissaki, and now Straily and Nico Zeglin today.

    Zeglin is 24 yrs old. Pitched well at Long Beach St in '23 and well in some Indy Ball.

    They also added Reilly and Viets in late ST.

    Have to search for MiLB arm depth anywhere you can and at all times!!!

    The great thing about going to live sports events is you don't know if you're going to see something historic. Today I went to the Cub game, after putting the liner back in my coat and fishing my Cubs knit hat out of the closet. I needed all that- my seats are in the upper deck, left, so the east wind was in my face. Both teams failed to capitalize on good situations, but both starters did a good job to accomplish this. So, we go to the bottom of the sixth inning. The Cubs tie it up, and then Pete Crow-Armstrong comes up. We all know he would still be in AAA if not for injuries, and future Hall-of-Famer Justin Verlander absolutely carved up the young fellow up in his first two plate appearances. So this time he hits a fly ball. The wind was blowing in and had suppressed several strong fly balls- including a rocket off Altuve's bat that Canario hauled in (does anybody else remind me of Jorge Soler?) , but the ball kept carrying and carrying. 107mph, legit angle and carry. The crowd went nuts, the dugout went nuts. Maybe, just maybe, I saw the first homer from a long-term Cub.

    Which was my original premise. They won the trades but lost their souls. They no longer employ the Cardinal way which had been so successful for so long.

    STL traded away a lot of minor league talent that went on to do nothing in the arenado + goldschmidt trades.  neither guy blocked any of their minor league talent in the pipeline, too.  that's ideal places to add talent.

    Natural cycle of baseball. Pitching makes adjustments in approach to counter a hot young rookie. Now it’s time for Busch and his coaches to counter those adjustments. Busch is very good and will figure it out, I think sooner than later.

    In 2020, the pandemic year and the year before they acquired Arenado, the Cardinals finished second and were a playoff team. Of the 12 batters with 100 plate appearances, 8 of them were home grown. Every member of the starting rotation (if you include Wainwright) and all but one of the significant relievers were home grown. While there have been a relative handful of very good trades interspersed which have been mentioned, player development had been their predominant pattern for decades - ever since I became an aware fan in the ‘70’s

    The Arenado deal was not a deal made out of dire need or desperation. It was a splashy, headline making deal for a perennial playoff team intended to be the one piece that brought the Cardinals from a very good team to a World Series contender. They have continued to wheel and deal and have been in a slide ever since. I stand by my supposition that that deal marked a notable turning point within the organization. They broke what had been a very successful formula for a very long time.
