The Ted Lilly Fan Club Super Computer (TLFCSC) kicked out this projection for today's TL start: 7.2 IP 2 ER 8 K 2 BB (1-2) 2B, SB, HBP A nice bounce back for TL and a much needed bullpen saving day. Happy W Day! Fire it up!

I"m really pissed about yesterday. We really needed that one. The next two games are not as good of a matchup for us. Me no happy. This is not a must win game today, but if we lose, tomorrow will be. Let's just hope that hte Brewers don't sweep.

Brewers are going down today and tomorrow. I think the Lilly Supercomputer might be inaccurate on the stolen base and the 2 walks. lol.

let us all join hands and pray that the identical lineup that generated 2 skinny little runs on friday will like the saturday matchup better. would very much hate to face glavine on sunday night, and need to beat him to avoid a sweep.

Nice play out in LF by Soriano. Nice baserunning by JJ. We look like a little league team today.

up 6-1...i hope lou lets lilly finish the whole damn game. this bullpen needs a break.

Howry, Howry, Howry. That ninth was WAY too boring. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

Pffft. That computer is all messed up. It got the BB and the SB all wrong... all wrong!

Bah! We were lucky. If THERIOT isn't safe on that grounder we don't score and lose 2-0.

Teams that win the World Series can all point to more then a few lucky games they won along the way. Also, if ARam doesn't struck out on some obvious balls maybe we get even more runs. Also, Theriot's hustle creates plays like what happened today.

Did anyone else notice how close the TLFCSC was? Projected line: 7.2 IP 2 ER 8 K 2 BB (1-2) 2B, SB, HBP Actual line: 7.2 IP 2 ER 8 K 1BB (1-3) 1B pretty impressive....going to vegas anytime soon when Lilly starts?

Just got back from the game. That third was a lot of fun. Riot beat out that grounder, and there was an electricity in the crowd that this could be a big inning. Lilly was beautiful. Just think, if we still had Alou, it would have been an 8-0 shutout.

Oh, by the way...you can thank me for that win. I was in the bleachers really givin it to Maine while he was long tossing. He over threw one into the stands and then one about 20 feet wide. We got the whole bleachers yelling at him and he even started laughing. I think we got in his head.

Someone remind me again why Dempster should be the closer right now, and not Howry? I don't care what Dempster's past stats are - go with the hot hand, that's the way Lou's played most of the season.

I as well got back a little while ago. Egomaniac home-plate ump (McClelland?) really likes to stick to A-Ram on ball 4 when he gets the jump and heads to first before his official call. From my vantage point, the ball four prior to his 2b in the 3rd was quite outside. Umpiring is so fucked up across the board this year. I hope MLB looks into this soon. The Umps work for them, not the other way around.

I think it's pretty obvious who progammed the Ted Lilly Fan Club Super Computer. It had to be Godenot of course.

prince, yard, 6-5 lead, 8th. amazing how a power bat can turn around a game vs. hamels Hamels wasn't pitching. It was off of Tom Gordon. And I hate Prince Fielder.

"...howry had a 4.15 era in july, exactly what’s so hot about that?" Admittedly not much, but Lou has said that he needs more work in order to be effective. So why change horses now?

The Brewers were very happy with their win tonight. They can feel the pressure. Suck it, cheeseheads...

6 - 2 and we bring in our 'best' middle reliever. Why did we activate Wood if we weren't going to use him. Howry's been used plenty. Why not Wood?

lou is saving him for national tv sunday, plus lou knows he hashopefully 5 inning marquis pitching and we will need 4 or 5 pitchers .

Scott Hairston just hit his 3rd homer in 3 ab's, with a leadoff homer for the Fathers who got him in an intradivision trade with Arizona for some nondescript AAA reliever. I wonder why Hendry didnt pursue him if the price was that low. He kills lefties and from what of have seen he can play decent OF and maybe could have played some CF vs. lefties with Murt in right.

i like the way zambrano and lilly are pitching but i think they have a lot of extra pressure on them to get to 8th inning and and save the bullpen since other 3 starters are not going deep. one of the three at least has to start getting into 7th. my guess would be marshall is the best bet among three.

Scott Hairston just hit his 3rd homer in 3 ab’s It's not like he hasn't done it before. He celebrated the news that he'd made the team by socking three homers in three consecutive bats March 27th at the end of spring training.

A begrudging congrats to Barry Bonds.... he's gotta retire after this year right?

cause Scott hairston was hitting .222 .301 .358 while with arizona in about 200 PA's, plus 220/296/382 last year in about the same # of PA's

Bonds has to come back next year if he wants to get 3000 hits.....and I bet he does.

Admittedly not much, but Lou has said that [Howry] needs more work in order to be effective. He has had 16 appearances in July/August. That is more than enough work to stay effective. In reality, you wouldn't want him to get more work that that.

That was Kevin Hart (2-1 3.03) pitching 6.2, giving up 1 run on 3 hits and raking 3 hits and 3 RBI himself for Iowa tonight. ....yes, he's the PTBNL we got from Baltimore for F. Bynum.

Congrats Bonds… he is the best player that most (if not all) of us have ever seen. I'll take Maddux

Congrats Bonds… he is the best player that most (if not all) of us have ever seen. please put me in the willie mays column. Bonds has to come back next year if he wants to get 3000 hits…..and I bet he does. not sure he has a contract. not sure he makes any team better. not sure any team wants the circus.

Did anyone catch/notice Selig's reaction? He stood up rather reluctantly and did not applaud (on camera, anyway--even though they showed quite a bit of him). I don't like having to root for A-Rod, but I will...

the espn crew even wanted to interview him during game but they said bud said no interviews, i guess if you dont have anything good to say about bonds why talk. for once bud got it right why comment.

Rob, Hairston still has more upside than Cedeno or one of Cherry/Rapada/Piggy. CT Steve, Just goes to show you how inept Selig is. He thinks (judging by his reaction) that Bonds is gulity of taking roids and doesnt try to suspend him for the season.. Bonds isnt even a member of the player's union anymore, he opted out so he could cut his own merchandising agreements, so they really cant defend him. If action was taken aganist him at the start of the year. The baseball litagation would have taken until June. Even if Selig lost Bonds wouldnt have had enought time to break the record and this is his last year because he will be indictied by the feds sometime bewteen September and March. Dave, I will take Santana as the best player I have seen. In the midst of the Steroids era he has been Gibson type domiant since 2004.

From Rotoworld: "The Red Sox have been having ongoing negotiations with Bobby Kielty's agent, Dan Lozano, about signing the recent free agent."

not sure he makes any team better. Haha... I am not really sure what to say if you don't think that Bonds makes a team better. Bonds isnt even a member of the player’s union anymore Yes he is. He opted out of the merchandising agreement, not the players' union. I will take Santana as the best player I have seen Santana isn't nearly as dominant as Pedro was at his peak - not even close. As for Mays? I never saw him play. And I would also say that A-Rod is not yet the player that Bonds was/is. Sure, the steroids may have helped him in getting to being the best player (at least hitter) of our generation, but you cannot deny how good he was/is.

BTW... Pedro has 5 of of the top 40 seasons pitched of all time (according to ERA +). Roger Clemens has 3. Randy Johnson has 2. Greg Maddux has 2. Johann Santanta has 0. He doesn't show up on the list of the top 100 until number 84.

not sure [Bonds] makes any team better. Yea.. I would hate to have a guy with an offensive line of .272/.493/.556. He would be leading the Cubs in OBP, SLUG, OPS, along with HR. But sure... he wouldn't make a team better.

The Giants will resign him if he wants to come back, pretty much that simple. They have a codependent relationship and will support each other till Bonds retires. This season has been pretty insanely full of landmarks. Bonds, ARod, Glavine, Griffey, Frank Thomas, Craig Biggio. We just have all these guys who've gotten or are going for landmarks.

Not sure about that Johann... I think the Giants are ready to move on. But an American League team would be completely foolish to not sign Bonds as a DH/occasional LF.

All this hand wringing over Bonds. So silly. Even with steroids a factor, I have never seen a hitter like him. Steroids may have added a few feet to some of his homers but it didn't give him his unique abilities. I think the biggest shame of it all is he really didn't need them. It would have been nice to see how he would have fared without them, but I'm not all that concerned about it. Of course, I live in the bay area so maybe I've bought into the propaganda. But anyone who really appreciates baseball is just removing the joy of watching an amazing player when they get all hot and bothered about his former roid use. If, as a fan, supplements are that big a deal to you, you should stop watching sports.

"...he is the best player that most (if not all) of us have ever seen." I'll take Clemente any day of the week, year or epoch. He doesn't have the slugging % that Bonds does, but that guy had it all. Saw him twice in the early 70's at Wrigley, and one time he made a 360 degree whirling throw from RF that nailed a runner at 3rd. The entire stadium (about 15,000) stood up and gave him a standing O for that play, once they stopped their collective jaws from dropping.

Well... I never saw Clemente or Mays play, so I can't really include them in the "best player I ever saw." But Bonds very much had it all also. He was the best left fielder in the game for years, and had every tool at the plate.

Bobby Kielty: I just looked up this guy. What is the big deal here? He has a .255 career BA, mediocre opb, and is not any better than what we have already. Is he?

He was the best LF in his time, before the roids made him look like the Michelin Man out there.

"I'm ready to sign," Zambrano said. "My hand is ready to sign that contract. Just bring it to me. I want to stay here and be a Cubbie for a long time." ...neat from ye olde tribune.

The E-Man: Umpiring is so fucked up across the board this year. I hope MLB looks into this soon. The Umps work for them, not the other way around. I agree, the quality of umping all the way back to April is pretty terrible. I can understand the occasional bad call or whatever, but it's consistently bad umping lately.

One other point... I've always been opposed to video replay because I think of umpires as baseball authority figures, but if the umps are going to get shitty, you might as well allow the video replay.

Hairston still has more upside than Cedeno or one of Cherry/Rapada/Piggy. well if Hairston played SS sure, as for a reliever, yeah maybe. A lot of hindsight on that one, be a whole lot of bitching I think if we traded for Hairston at the time. Plus he's JHJ's brother, good reason to stay away. :)

Best I've ever seen play? I could go Rickey Henderson or Roger Clemens. But Bonds has to be in the conversaion.

Had Will Carroll on the big show at the station this morning. Here are a few of his Cub-related thoughts.... He thinks Theriot is a really great player. Thinks the NL MVP race is a two horse show between Aramis and Braun. Thinks the Cubs will take the next couple weeks to blow the Brewers away and run away with the division down the stretch. Thinks 07 Cubs bullpen = Nasty Boys. STILL thinks we will hit a boatload of home runs in the last two months.

"Thinks the NL MVP race is a two horse show between Aramis and Braun." I think Prince Fielder, Ryan Howard, and Chipper Jones should have a place in that conversation. "Thinks 07 Cubs bullpen = Nasty Boys." Yes because Ryan Dempster and Bob Howry strike fear into NL hitters.

The most amazing thing about Bonds will always be how many homers he hit while seeing so few hittable pitches per game. Also didn't play in particularly lefty power-friendly home parks. Selena Roberts has a nice column on Bonds and Aaron in today's NYT. She finishes by writing - "Aaron's presence as home run king begged everyone to ask, What was the social value of the achievement? Bonds leaves everyone to ask, What is the monetary worth of his home run ball?" "The meaning of the record has been stolen. What remains? Many fingerprints and one conterfeit king." Mays is the greatest player I ever saw play. Clemente the most exciting. I saw Mays for the fist time in '65. Still a great player but not as thrilling as he must have been 10 years earlier.

"The most amazing thing about Bonds will always be how many homers he hit while seeing so few hittable pitches per game. " Because the Bond's strike zone was so small that anything in it was crushable. I'm all for giving a star a smaller zone but you almost can't throw him a strike without it being in his wheelhouse.

Wes: [Will Carroll]: Thinks the NL MVP race is a two horse show between Aramis and Braun Miggy?

I'd the say the main strike against Miggy this year has been his godawful defense (also, MVPs almost never come from losing teams, which is stupid, but the case), so I can see him not winning. 17 errors, 4th worst in zone rating and 2nd worst in fielding % among 3rd baseman.

miggy shouldnt be playing 3rd anyway, but they just HAD to get rid of mike lowell. gotta keep that payroll under 20m. that team is as disgusting as the yanks overpaying. the recent king of low-spending disgust goes to MIN...its one thing to take the stance of accepting youre a small market team and spending accordingly...taking care of your prospects...etc. its another thing to NEVER give your team that extra push come trade deadline. MIN never gets that extra piece...they just stand around. this year they even traded away their 2nd baseman while still in the playoff hunt. i couldnt take it if i were a fan.

"Because the Bond’s strike zone was so small that anything in it was crushable..." Yeah, considering that the guy's been allowed to wear the equipment equivalent of a Middle Linebacker up there at the plate. He hangs out so far over the plate that any inside pitches will hit him, and often do.

dumpster did have another one of his famous 20+ pitch outtings (26). he's done them back to back before...and he's bounced back. dunno what's up now. maybe they just wanna be careful since he's still relatively close to coming off a 1-month injury. *shrug*

Old and Blue, Bonds in the last third (7 years) of his career has hit 57% of the homers he hit in first 2/3rds (457 to 261). So the roids have helped him. Dave, While Pedro's 2-year peak was the best of maybe any pitcher in the history of the game. Santana from 04-06 has put numbers of atleast a sub 3 ERA, a WHIP under 1, a BAA under .220, atleast 228 IP, with 238 or K's, a K/9 rate of least 9.25, and a mininum of 16 wins. Depending on his last 11 starts go he could make that 4 straight years in each of those catagories. You are looking at one stat (ERA) and I am looking at the whole picture.

#65- He would be leading the Cubs in OBP, SLUG, OPS, along with HR. But sure… he wouldn’t make a team better. it's merely my opinion; there is more to a baseball team than the 3 hours of game-time. sorry you dis-agree.

While Pedro’s 2-year peak was the best of maybe any pitcher in the history of the game. Santana from 04-06 has put numbers No... it isnt a 2-year peak. Did you see where I said Pedro has 5 of the top 40 season pitching of all time? Santana has zero. And doesnt show up until number 80. And I did not say it was era. It is ERA+, which is a look at how good a pitcher really is. Pedro was a far better pitcher than Santana has been.

it’s merely my opinion; there is more to a baseball team than the 3 hours of game-time. sorry you dis-agree. No need to apologize, but I find it really hard to say that a guy who would lead your team in almost every offensive category would not help your team offensively.

More on Santana vs. Pedro: Pedro had 7 straight years with a sub 3.00 ERA. He had more than 200 strikeouts in all but one of those years. His highest BAA was .217. His highest WHIP was 1.09. He had 17 wins in 5 of the 7 years. In my mind he was easily the best pitcher in baseball over that time period, and one of the best we have ever seen. Clemens and Maddux have had better careers, but Pedro was the better pitcher. And Santana is really good, but not Pedro.

Incredible moment. Huge part of the fun of working there is when something magic like that happens, and you get to interact with baseball fans.

That bear hug was indeed awesome. Word is that Dansby has become an outstanding clubhouse leader and that moment really demonstrated it. That reaction was one of a proud coach/mentor who’s student just excelled. I’m not even sure who was more overjoyed, Dansby or PCA. A veteran expressing that kind of unabashed support and enthusiasm for a struggling rookie is beyond fantastic to see.

BAHAHA! I've actually not seen a single fight, but can't wait to see 70 degrees for sure!

next time i roll up into wrigley i'll try to start a fist fight and maybe we'll meet.

be prepared.  i'm gonna make you earn your money.

seriously, though...that's a cool as hell "retirement" assignment.  i imagine it will be better with warmer nights.

I was there for the PCA homer as well. 50 degree baseball is no longer fun when sitting in the shade (knit hats, scarves and gloves are football gear) but I agree it’s one of those really cool moments. I loved the bear hug given by Swanson at home plate and of course the added impact that the PCA homer became a game winner.

In honor of dispatching with the Astros, this painting is titled “The Sweep”.
I retired a couple years ago, and took a job at Wrigley as a security guy. SO cool having Wrigley as your office. SO cool being there when PCA got his first hit.
“The Sweep” happens at the end of every game - the security staff sweeps through the ballpark making sure it’s empty.
(Hopefully I’ll be putting this painting up often this year.)
Lastly, because working for the Cubs, they understandably don’t want you voicing opinions on social, which is why I’m only painting the banners here.

Honorable mention to Jim Bullinger via BleedCubbieBlue:

Bullinger, a converted shortstop, had pitched in three games before he came to the plate. He had entered the game to relieve starter Shawn Boskie after four innings, and came to the plate to lead off the fifth, and hit Rheal Cormier's first pitch over the left-field wall to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead; they eventually won the game 5-2 in 14 innings. Of the 129players to homer in their first MLB at-bat, Bullinger is one of just 32 to hit that blast on the first big-league pitch he saw (including Contreras) and one of just six pitchers to do so.

Most of this activity will lead nowhere, of course, but it is fantastic that they’re looking for talent in every nook and cranny. You never know where that can lead, and virtually nothing is lost if if leads nowhere, as long as no one of superior talent and potential is losing an opportunity.
