AZL Royals Shut-Down AZL Cubs at Sloan Park

Carlos Diaz collected four singles, stole a base, and scored two runs, Yeison Melo drilled an RBI single and a two-run double, and RHSP Arnaldo Hernandez tossed 5.2 IP of four-hit ball, leading the AZL Royals to a 6-1 victory over the AZL Cubs in Arizona League action Monday night at Sloan Park in Mesa, AZ.

RHJP James Norwood (on South Bend 7-day DL) got the rehab start for the Cubs and worked three innings (49 pitches), allowing three runs on six hits (all singles). He did not issue any walks, and struck out one (swinging) with a 5/2 GO/FO and a GIDP. Despite the mediocre results, he was throwing his fastball in the mid-90's, and looks to be ready to return to the SB-Cubs.

25-year old RHP Trey McNutt (2014 shoulder surgery) followed Norwood to the mound, making his second AZL rehab appearance and working a 1-2-3 inning (5-3, 4-3, P-4). While he did retire the side without allowing any baserunners, McNutt is still unable to elevate his fastball velocity past 90 MPH, and there is no sign of his wipeout power slider. McNutt is eligible to be a Rule 55 minor league free-agent (6YFA) post-2015, so if he doesn't start to show more than he has so far, the Cubs are unlikely to offer him a 2016 minor league successor contract.

Cubs 4th round draft pick D. J. Wilson (South Canton HS - Canton, OH) played CF and went 0-4 (4-3, F-8, F-7, F-7).

In AZL Cubs roster news, 1B Joey Martarano (hitting 315/345/426 with a team-leading 12 RBI) has been moved-up to Eugene. Martarano (who plays pro baseball as a sort of "summer job"), will be returning to school at Boise State in about three weeks, where he is a linebacker on the Bronco football team.

Here is the abridged box score from last night's game (Cubs players only):

AZL CUBS LINEUP:
1. D. J. Wilson, CF: 0-4 (4-3, F-8, F-7, F-7)

3. Jose Paniagua, 1B: 2-4 (2B, F-7, 1B, K, CS)

AZL CUBS PITCHERS
1. James Norwood: 3.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R (3 ER), 0 BB, 1 K, 1 GIDP, 5/2 GO/FO, 49 pitches (36 strikes)
2. Trey McNutt: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, 2/1 GO/FO, 12 pitches (7 strikes)
3. Jesus Camargo: 3.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R (3 ER), 0 BB, 5 K, 2/2 GO/FO, 46 pitches (37 strikes)
4. Erling Moreno: 0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 0/1 GO/FO, 22 pitches (13 strikes)
5. Jesus Castillo: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, 0/2 GO/FO, 15 pitches (11 strikes)

AZ Phil - any updates on Javier Baez? I know he's in AZ and cleared to do baseball activities but hasn't appeared in a game yet.

jtsunami: Javy Baez is at the Under Armour Performance Center at Riverview Paek, and is doing rehab on an individual basis, which means he can take BP and infield practice pretty much whenever he feels like it, either individually in the enclosed cages or out on Field #1 with the AZL Cubs.

I haven't seen Baez take pre-game BP with the AZL Cubs yet, but because he is on the Iowa DL he cannot rehab anywhere but with a short-season affiliiate (AZL Cubs or Eugene), so Baez will very likely play in all of his rehab games with AZL Cubs (for at least a week or maybe two), before he returns to Iowa. I would think he would much prefer just staying in Mesa rather than taking long overnight bus rides through Oregon, Washington, and Idaho with the Emeralds.

Players on the Cubs MLB DL (like Tommy LaStella and Zac Rosscup) can rehab with any minor league affiliate, so LaStella and Rosscup might play in just a couple of games with the AZL Cubs before moving their rehabs up to South Bend, Myrtle Beach. Tennessee, and/or Iowa.

I guess Canario, Mervis, Strumpf and Vazquez are the only guys blocked. Everyone else has time.
Canario is the only guy there that's used multiple options.

    bellinger debut wednesday.

also, taillon may not start until this weekend (tentatively)...throwing a sim game today.  he's "working on things" and is having some minor leg soreness running with cleats (fielding, covering 1st), but not while pitching or off-field.

Childersb3: I don't think the Cubs will add any AAV until the MLB Trade Deadline (and even that is dependent on how well the Cubs are playing and where they are in the standings at that point in time).

Otherwise, the Cubs might perhaps do something like "exchange" Drew Smyly ($10.5M in 2024 AAV plus an additional potential $3M in performance bonuses) for J. D. Davis ($6.9M in 2024 and then he is a FA post-2024) and then maybe (hopefully) jettison Patrick Wisdom and Nick Madrigal without having to eat any salary (like if clubs claim Wisdom and Madrigal off waivers and thereby take on 100% of Wisdom's 2024 $2.725M salary and 100% of Madrigal's $1.81M salary). The Cubs don't need to get anything back for Wisdom and Madrigal other than AAV space and the $50,000 waiver price.

Another possibility would be a prospect for prospect trade, like when the Diamondbacks traded OF Daulton Varsho (the D'backs were overloaded with LH-hitting outfielders) to the Blue Jays for C Gabriel Moreno (Moreno was blocked in Toronto by Kirk and Jansen).

So if the Cubs have an opportunity to trade an outfield or middle-infield prospect for maybe a young arm or a 3B or catching prospect of similar value, I could see that happening.

    z.wheeler (PHI) got a 3/126m extension...42m a year for age 35-37.

    SP market is getting crazy.

Well said, Crunch. Every point is spot on perfect. And even if Ricketts allowed Hoyer to go all the way to the next AAV Level ($257M), it's $4,000,000!! For one damn year. He's got $80M+ coming off next year. Wonder what Blake Snell on an opt out deal would do for Cubs playoff chances this yeat. It's absolutely maddening and I too am exhausted from fans defending billionaires. Just stop.

AZ Phil, what do you think the chances are that Jed makes a trade before OD?

MLB Network today and Chicago Radio have both speculated as recently as yesterday that Jed will make a sizable move.

They spoke about Alonso still and Bieber from Cleveland.

Social Media thinks JD Davis from SF might work now (I think we have that RH/3B/DH spot covered though).

I wouldn't mind a SP like Bieber (he's in his last year of his original deal). Hendricks scares me. He's not the ground ball guy he used to be. He'd be lucky to have a sub 5 ERA in my opinion. CLEV needs OF slug. Canario is available (not even going to think about ONKC, PCA or Jaquar here). Brennan Davis probably needs a new spot. Mervis could get a chance at their 1B gig opposite Naylor as their DH. Vazquez appears ready for a shot at MLB level ball.

    Thoughts?

Here are the pitcher reports from Sunday's Guardians - Cubs game at Sloan Park:

    KYLE HENDRICKS
    FB: 86-88
    CH: 80-81
    SL: 79-80
    CV: 74
COMMAND: Threw three innings and allowed three runs on five hits (three singles and two doubles), one walk, and a WP, and he struck out one (swinging)... one run scored in each of the three innings... command was off right from the gitgo (he hit two batters in the 1st inning!)... threw 52 pitches (33 strikes - six swing & miss - six foul balls) over the course of the three innings, so at least he got his pitch count up over 50 (he threw only 29 pitches in two innings of work in his first outing last Tuesday)...

    HECTOR NERIS
    FB: 90
    SPLIT: 78-83
COMMENT: Allowed a lead-off single but then induced an F-7 and an inning-ending 6-4-3 DP... threw 10 pitches (but only five strikes - no swing & miss)... FB velo was down a tick from his last outing and split was a bit off (strike throwing on FB must be better than 50% to get swing & miss on splitter)...

    ADBERT ALZOLAY
    FB: 94-95
    CT: 89-91
    SL: 85-87
COMMENT: Allowed a lead-off single on a 95-MPH FB on his sixth pitch of the AB, but then retired the next three men in a row (P-4, 5-3, K-swinging on a SL)... Needed 18 pitches to retire the side (12 strikes - five swing & miss, including three on SL, one on CT, and one on FB)...

    DANIEL PALENCIA
    FB: 96-98
    SL/CT: 88-90
    CH: 86
    COMMENT: Hurled a 1-2-3 6th inning (L-8, 6-3, P-6)... Threw only 50% strikes (12 pitches -six strikes - one swing & miss on a CH - two foul balls)...

    EDWIN ESCOBAR
    FB: 93-94
    SL: 81-84
COMMENT: 1-2-3 7th inning (4-3, K-swinging, 5-3)... 13-pitches (nine strikes - one swing & miss on SL - two foul balls)... FB has good velo but he doesn't get swing & miss with it, so he throws mainly his "plus" slider (which is his "go-to" strikeout pitch)... of all of the Cubs MLB ST LHRP contenders I have seen so far, Escobar is #1 (Luke Little's stuff is more electric, but he still has trouble commanding it and is clearly not MLB-ready)...

    PORTER HODGE
    FB: 94-96
    CT: 91-92
    SL: 80-82
COMMENT: Pitched the 8th inning after the Cubs went ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the 7th... allowed a lead-off single on a 1-0 FB and a two-out single on a 1-0 CT, but he did manage to retire the side without allowing a run... struck out two (both swinging)... threw 19 pitches (11 strikes - five swing & miss - one foul ball)... stuff is plus but FB command comes & goes...

    BRAD WIECK
    FB: 86-87
    SLOW CV: 67-68
COMMENT: Threw a 1-2-3 seven pitch (five strike) 9th (F-7, K-swinging on an 86 MPH FB, and F-9) to record the save... while he at one-time featured a mid-90's FB, a mid-80's SL, and a mid-70's CV, after enduring heart surgery in 2021 and TJS in 2022 the 6'8 250+ lefty has morphed into an EXTREME soft-tosser, complete with an "eephus" CV that would make Bill "Spaceman" Lee jealous...

  • Finwe Noldaran (view)

Agreed, and with the way they've used him in the organization, I'd imagine he'd be fine with a mostly benchwarmer status; and at this point I don't know why Madrigal is still on the roster.......

  • crunch (view)

you'd think a guy that could play 2nd and 3rd that has more pop than madrigal could at least get a shot at the team while they're busy paying him to be a multi-millionaire minor leaguer.

  • Finwe Noldaran (view)

Are we able to orchestrate a giant nationwide conspiracy to convince Bote that all the games during the regular season are now also spring training games and don't count?
