Braves @ Cubs: Foltynewicz vs Lackey (Game 134)

ATL (59-73): RHP Mike Foltynewicz (10-10, 4.84)
CHC (73-60): RHP John Lackey (10-10, 4.98)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Lackey lost his first game since June 28 on Sunday in Philly, giving up 4 ER in 5 innings. He beat the Braves in Atlanta in July (5 IP, 1 ER, 1 K, 2 BB). Overall, they are 45-169 (.266) against him. Markakis is 24-72 with a HR.

Foltynewicz has reeled off four straight losses, the last one being a not-terrible one-run five inning outing against the Rockies. He’s 5-6 with a 5.62 on the road this season. The Cubs are 4-12 (.333) against him. Rizzo is 1-2 with a HR.

Welcome to the Cubs, Leonys Martin. May all of your pinches be running.

Lester (8-7) is back tomorrow to face Sims (2-4) at the same time.

Go Cubs!

@John Beasley Expect a few more callups on Tuesday. Iowa Cubs season ends on Monday. Rob Z is probably making a last start there this weekend. Could see Rob Z, Leathersich, Carsaiti, Johnson, and/or Hannemann (probably not all of them) come up on Tuesday.

I think I heard similar predictions last September 1st. Few players get called up. The ones who do have earned the right to sit in that dugout or bullpen. September call-ups are for teams that feel they have to start selling next season's (imaginary) product.

grimm to be activated today, lester tomorrow...freeman/maples/caratini to be called up...maybe more

cubs scouting shohei otani in japan (along with 1/2 of MLB teams). that's going to be interesting. he could legitimately play cornerOF/DH and pitch in MLB.

RHSP Seth Frankoff and RHRP Jose Rosario have been Designated for Assignment, so the Cubs will have seven days (used to be ten days) to either trade, outright to the minors, or release them. (Actually it's only five days, because it takes two days to run a player through waivers).

Just as with RHSP Aaron Brooks last month, Frankoff is likely to be claimed off waivers.

Rosario is on the 7-day DL at AA Tennessee and has been for a while now, and he cannot be placed on Outright Assignment Waivers if he is not healthy enough to play. If he is not healthy enough to play, he can only be traded or released.

If the Cubs wanted a pinch runner for the September stretch run, why didn't they simply bring up Hanneman and not bother with Leonys Martin? Hanneman is already on the 40-man roster, so it seems like the Cubs unnecessarily cut bait with one of Rosario or Frankoff. Not that either has any real ceiling to speak of, but nonetheless, assets are assets. And unless Seattle is covering the money, Martin makes about $800K for September, I wish I could be so flippant with that kind of coin.

JHB: Seth Frankoff and Jose Rosario were Designated for Assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Mike Freeman and Dillon Maples. Another roster move will be necessary if and when Leonys Martin is selected from Iowa.

It's possible that Addison Russell will be transferred to the 60-day DL to make room for Martin on the 40, and if he is, he would be eligible to be reinstated from the DL on the day after the conclusion of the MLB regular season (10/2). Otherwise, probably either OF Mark Zagunis or RHSP Eddie Butler (both on the AAA Iowa 7-day DL) will be recalled and placed on the Cubs MLB 60-day DL. This would open up a slot on the Cubs MLB 40-man roster for Martin, but then Zagunis or Butler (whichever one is recalled and placed on the 60-day DL) could not be replaced on the Post-Season Eligibilty List by another player (that is, by a minor league player who was not on the MLB 40-man roster as of midnight 8/31, like Maples, Freeman, or Martin) because Zagunis or Butler will not have spent at least 60 days on an MLB DL. (Time spent on a minor league DL does not count toward the minimum number of days required to be spent on an MLB DL before being eligible to be reinstated).

This would NOT apply to Addison Russell being transferred from the 10-day DL to the 60-day DL because time spent on the MLB 10-day DL counts toward the 60 days he would need to spend on the 60-day DL and it turns out his 60th day on the DL would be the last day of the MLB regular season (10/1), making him fully eligible to play in the post-season (presuming his foot is OK).

As for why the Cubs did not just recall Jacob Hannemann instead of acquiring Leonys Martin, I think it';s clear that the Cubs do not believe that Hannemann is ready for MLB yet, whereas Martin has considerable MLB experience.

AZ Phil, how does that DL move work for Butler/Zagunis? Is it really kosher to activate them from the minor league DL, promote them to the majors, and then put them right back on the 60 day DL? Or can they be called up while still technically considered disabled?

BRADSBEARD: As long as a player on an Optional Assignment to the minors has spent at least seven days on a minor league 7-day DL, he can be reinstated from the minor league affiliate's 7-day DL, recalled, and placed on the MLB 60-day DL (presuming he is still injured). However, time spent on a minor league DL would NOT count toward the 60 days the player would have to spend on the MLB 60-day DL. The clock starts over once the player is recalled from his Optional Assignment and is placed on the MLB 60-day DL.

The problem would be if a player is on an Optional Assignment to the minors and is on a minor league 60-day DL and he has not spent at least 60 days on the DL. In that case he could not be recalled and placed on an MLB 60-day DL until he had spent at least 60 days on the minor league DL. But since both Mark Zagunis and Eddie Butler have spent at least seven days on the Iowa 7-day DL, either one could be recalled and placed on the Cubs MLB 60-day DL - AS LONG AS HE IS STILL INJURED - .

Unless one or both are not still injured (and I don't know why they are on the DL, but both have been out of action for about a month)), of the two, I would think the Cubs would be more likely to put Zagunis on the 60-day DL, because if Butler can get back into pitching shape (and he could do that at Instructs), there would still be the possibility that he could be available in case the Cubs get into a SP jam in the post-season (not very likely, but possible). Zagunis would not have similar value to this Cubs team.

The three negative things about recalling Zagunis or Butler and then placing one of them on the MLB 60-day DL is that: #1) the player would have to be paid at the major league rate rather than at the "minor league split" rate for the last month of the season (a difference of $80,000+ for Zagunis and a difference of $55,000+ for Butler), #2) the player would accrue MLB Service Time, and #3) the player would be ineligible to be included on the Cubs Post-Season Eligibility List and thus could not be replaced on the Cubs Post-Season Eligibility List by a player who was not on the Cubs MLB 40-man roster as of midnight 8/31 (like Freeman, Martin, or Maples, or any other Cubs minor leaguer who was not on the Cubs MLB 40-man roster as of midnight 8/31) should the need arise. (A player on an MLB 60-day DL is not eligible to be included on his club's Post-Season Eligibility List until he has spent at least 60 days on the DL).

The problem with transferring Addison Russell from the Cubs MLB 10-day DL to the MLB 60-day DL is that although he would be eligible to be reinstated on 10/3 (the day after the conclusion of the MLB regular season) and he would thus be eligible to be included on the Cubs Post-Season Eligibiliity List, another player on the Cubs MLB 40-man roster would have to be outrighted, traded, or released to make room for Russell on the 40, since Zagunis or Butler could not be placed on the Cubs MLB 60-day DL after the conclusion of the MLB regular season, and Zagunis or Butler could not be placed on the 60-day DL prior to the conclusion of the MLB regular season (in anticipation of Russell being reinstated on 10/3) because beginning on September 1st a player cannot be placed on the MLB 60-day DL unless he is simultaneously replaced on the MLB 40-man roster by another player. (Prior to September 1st, a player can be placed on the MLB 60-day DL if his club's MLB 40-man roster is full, but he does not have to be replaced on the 40 with another player).

One more thing to keep in mind about September baseball is that beginning this season and for the first time, TRADES ARE PROHIBITED THE LAST WEEK OF THE MLB REGULAR SEASON. So if a club battling for a playoff spot loses a key player in late September, the club cannot make a "quick-fix" trade for an impending free-agent to help get the club over the finish line and into the playoffs.

As part of this new rule, Trade Assignment Waivers automatically expire at 12 noon (Eastern) on the 7th day prior to the conclusion of the MLB regular season. (Trades involving minor league players are also prohibited during this period).

Note that the "no trade" period would continue beyond seven days if the regular season is extended beyond Sunday 10/1 to accomodate rain out make-up games or tie-breaker games.

After being Designated for Assignment on Friday, RHRP Jose Rosario has been released.

As I mentioned yesterday, Rosario was on the AA Tennessee 7-day DL and so he could not be placed on Outright Assignment Waivers unless he is healthy enough to play, and apparently he is not.

Presuming he isn't claimed off Release Waivers, nothing would preclude the Cubs from re-signing Rosario to a minor league contract (if Rosario is agreeable to the idea), but if they do he cannot be returned to the MLB 40-man roster any earlier than May 15th.

If I read the BBRef/Cots page accurately, Martin is Arbitration-eligible this off-season. Which is of little value if he hits like I do, in September. However, few saw Jon Jay hitting this well this season. If Martin can rekindle the offensive near-adequacy, he becomes a cost-controlled replacement for Jay for 2018. And, he's a very good defender/base runner. With Seattle absorbing much of the cost on Martin, the Cubs appear to be clearly "under" regarding the 2017 cap situation. Very low cost, and Hannemann can stay in Iowa until the season ends. Regarding who/if anyone gets DFA's now, I wondered about 60 Day-ing Butler. Zagunis would make sense, as well, as Phil notes.

Shit. I've got nothing to bitch at today. Carry on. Also: Cubs 9-1 in Lackey's last ten starts.

Cry baby Braun ejected after striking out swinging and saying something to the ump... Nats down 1-0, if they could just score a couple runs!!!

I can see this crazy scenario happen (not saying it will, but it's a possibility). Nats suck for remainder of season and crawl into the postseason. Cubs finish strong and not only win division, but finish one game better than the Nats and get home field in first round. D-Backs lock up wildcard game home advantage against either Rockies or Brewers. Then go on to beat Dodgers in NLDS while Cubs beat the sorry-ass Nats. Cubs then get home advantage for NLCS against the D-Backs..,

OK, everybody. It's like this. Very simple. Cubs beat the Reds Saturday morning in Goodyear and the Cubs are in the AZL playoffs. Cubs lose and they are out. Jeremiah Estrada gets the ball. Go Cubs, go! Good luck to Carmelo Martinez and the boys in blue!

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be savored...unedited. 40 years, wow.
