Mikolas beat the Giants (7 IP, 1 ER) his last time out. In three games against the Cubs this season, he's 2-0 with a 2.00. For their careers, these Cubs are 19-76 (.250) against him. Happ is 3-5.

Tomorrow it's Montgomery and Flaherty at 2:20pmCST to end the regular season.

Go Cubs!

well that sucked.

...and a reminder that the guy that owned the cubs for 8 innings today was STL's winning bidding war pickup vs the cubs...and "plan B" was t.chatwood.

Think I’d rather the Dodgers lose tonight and hopefully ramp up the pressure on the Cards tomorrow. Also, truth be known, I’d rather face the Cards than the Dodgers in a wild card game (if the Cubs don‘t win the Central)

there is a weird amount of DET fans at this MIL game.

i know they're kinda close(ish), but caring about the 2018 DET team sailed long ago.

Tie going into 162.  Guess there is a reason the baseball season is so long.

Advantage Milwaukee.

All MLB games start at 3:25 PM (Eastern) on Sunday.

Also, remember if there is a Game #163 tie-breaker game (or two) on Monday, regular-season roster rules apply (entire 40-man roster available except for players on DL or other MLB inactive list and for players on Optional Assignment to the minors). And while the result of a Game #163 tie-breaker would not count in the standings, individual player stats from the game would count.

Also, ALL players on an MLB Reserve List (including players from clubs that aren't playing in Game #163) or MLB 60-day DL who are not on Optional Assignment to the minors and who have not yet accrued 172 days of MLB Service Time in 2018 will accrue an extra day (applies to Bote, Caratini, T. Davis, Freeman, Gore, Hancock, Maples, Mills, Norwood, Rosario, Webster, B. Wilson, and Zagunis, but - NOT - to Alzolay, Tseng, and Underwood).

Then on the day after the conclusion of the MLB regular season, all players on an MLB 10-day DL must be reinstated, and all players on Optional Assignment to the minors must be recalled. Also, the ban on trades that began at 12 noon (Eastern) on the Sunday prior to the pre-scheduled last week of the MLB regular season is lifted. In addition, minor league players eligible to be Article XX-D free-agents (RHP Anthony Bass is the only Cubs minor leaguer so eligible) can file for free-agency beginning on the day after the conclusion of the MLB regular season up through 10/15. (In the case of Anthony Bass, if he doesn't file as an Article XX-D minor league free-agent prior to 10/15, he would be automatically declared an MLB Rule 55 minor league 6YFA on the 5th day after the final game of the World Series).

And then players on an MLB 60-day DL must be reinstated no later than 5 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day after the final game of the World Series, except for players who are MLB Article XX-B free-agents (who are automatically reinstated from the 60-day DL at 9 AM Eastern on the day after the final game of the World Series when MLB Article XX-B free-agents are automatically declared free-agents and are removed from MLB reserve lists).

And minor league players eligible to be MLB Rule 55 6YFA or second-contract free-agents are automatically declared free-agents at 5 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day after the final game of the World Series unless the player is added to an MLB  40-man roster or signs a 2019 minor league successor contract prior to the deadline. Likewise, any player on an MLB 40-man roster who would have been eligible to be an MLB Rule 55 minor league free-agent if he wasn't on an MLB 40-man roster cannot be sent outright to the minors after 5 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day after the final game of the World Series unless the player agrees to sign a 2019 Major League or minor league contract prior to being outrighted.

And MLB Rule 6 Draft-Excluded Players (in the case of the Cubs, that would be T. Davis,. Freeman, Gore, and Webster) cannot be sent outright to the minors unless waivers are requested no later than the 5th day after the final game of the World Series. NOTE: Outright Assignment Waivers secured after September 1st are good for seven days or until the end of the waiver period (whichever comes first).

So the Cubs & Brewers (N. L. Central) and Dodgers & Rockies (N. L. West) are tied for 1st place in their respective divisions going into the final game of the regular season.

If the teams remain tied after Sunday, there would be not one but two Game #163 tie-breakers played on Monday -- MIL at CUBS to determine the N. L. Central Champion and COL at LAD to determine the N. L. West Champ, and the two Game #163 losers would be the two N. L. Wild Card teams (with the home team for the Wild Card game the MIL-CUBS loser).

So it would almost feel like a tournament.

If the double tie-breakers do happen, Jose Quintana is set-up to face the Brewers at Wrigley Field on Monday, and if the Cubs lose that game (which would - NOT - be an "elimination game" for the loser), Jon Lester would start the Wild Card game on Tuesday at Wrigley Field versus either the Dodgers or the Rockies (and the Wild Card game - IS - an elimination game).

BTW, although the entire September 40-man roster is available for the Monday tie-breaker game, the Cubs will need to specify a 25-man active roster prior to the start of the Wild Card game, and it would very likely include ten or eleven pitchers (two SP and eight or nine RP) and a six or seven-man bench (depending on whether the Cubs go with ten or eleven pitchers).

The thing is, it is important to not "shoot the wad" on Monday, because losing that game is not the end of the world. Losing the Wild Card game would be the end, however (of the season, anyway).

I completely disagree.  You do absolutely everything to win on Monday to avoid having to play Tuesday and get home field advantage through the NLCS.

anything can happen in a single game, so it would make zero sense to hold something back on Monday just to have a shot at a 50/50 game on Tuesday.

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.

he's hugging canario in the dugout cuz morel will shrivel up and die if he doesn't hug at least a dozen people a day.

  • crunch (view)

    and morel is injured...nice.

morel trying to play LF from 3rd...runs into canario while leaping and comes down ribs/arm-first.

hopefully he sticks around to finish this terrible game, or at least is going to avoid the IL.
