Cub Long Balls Tie Up Rockies at Talking Stick

Jose Escobar (opposite-field line-drive), Alfonsin Rosario (light-tower moonshot), and Bradlee Beesley (hard-contact blast) belted solo home runs, Anderson Suriel doubled, walked and scored two runs, and Adan Sanchez drilled an RBI single, reached base on an HBP, and walked for the Cubs, and Juan Castillo smacked a two-run double and Franklin Lopez laced a two-run triple for the Rockies, as the two teams played to a 6-6 tie in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training game played Monday afternoon on Dust Storm Field at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, east of Scottsdale, AZ.

Cubs pitchers Luis Martinez-Gomez and Wilme Mora combined to walk ten, hit a batter, and throw a wild pitch.

The game was called after 7-1/2 innings of play.

The Cubs are now 1-0-3 in their first four Cactus League Extended Spring Training games.

Rosario's HR was his third in three games (he didn't play in last Tuesday's game), so he has homered in all three Cactus League EXST games in which he has played. (On the pitch prior to Monday's bomb he just missed a HR down the LF line when a line-drive with home run distance hooked foul at the last second).

INF Derniche Valdez (the Cubs top DSL prospect in 2023) has returned to Extended Spring Training, and he served (quite cheerfully, I might say) as the bat boy and general gopher ("go for this, go for that") during Monday's game. (D. Valdez had been placed on the Restricted List on March 30th for an undisclosed reason).

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be savored...unedited. 40 years, wow.

Does he have any options left, Phil?
