LAD (42-35): RHP Ross Stripling (6-2, 1.99)

Lester, who’s very quietly putting together a nice little season, has won his last six starts, including seven shutout innings against these Dodgers at Wrigley on Wednesday. Overall, they are 23-118 (.195) against him. Hernandez is 5-16 with 2 HR.

Stripling lost the matchup against Lester (6 IP, 3 ER). The Cubs are 8-42 (.190) against him. Baez is 2-2; Schwarber has a HR in 4 ABs.

AZ PHIL: Have you seen Drew Smyly out your way? Has he been pitching to live batters yet? Have you heard from any personnel on his progress? Thanks PHIL.

E-MAN: Drew Smyly was left behind at Extended Spring Training in Mesa when the Cubs finished MLB Spring Training, but he did not pitch in any EXST games or even "live" BP. At some point in time in May he went to Chicago and joined the MLB club to continue his rehab there, and I believe he threw either a "sim" game or "live" BP sometime earlier this month at Wrigley Field, either pre-game or on an off-day.

The thing to remember about players who are on an MLB Disabled List (and this is NOT true for players on a minor league DL) is that the player doesn't have to go anywhere. All he is required to do is remain with the MLB club, and that includes travelling with the club on the road. So (for example), Yu Darvish did not have to go to South Bend. He could have refused. And likewise, Drew Smyly (and Eddie Butler, too) don't have to go to Mesa. They can just stay in Chicago with the MLB club. Which is apparently what Smyly has been doing lately.

However, most players who are rehabbing from an injury eventually do agree to go somewhere that is more conducive to the rehab process, like when Darvish pitched at South Bend yesterday. But the player is totally in control as far as whether he goes to another place, where he goes, and if he does, how long he stays there. It's up to the player to decide, and while the club can make a suggestion, ultimately the player must consent to the assignment.

Another thing to keep in mind is that a DL rehab assignment is normally limited to 30 days for pitchers and 21 days for position players, but beginning in 2017 (as the result of changes in MLB rules that were part of the new CBA), a pitcher or a position player who is rehabbing from an elbow UCL transplant (Tommy John Surgery) - and that's ONLY TJS - can have his rehab assignment renewed once, so that a pitcher rehabbing from TJS can spend up to 60 days on a minor league rehab assignment, and a position player rehabbing from TJS can spend up to 42 days (six weeks) on a minor league rehab assignment. So (for example) if Drew Smyly began an official Article XIX-C Minor League Rehab Assignment on July 3rd and spent the entire 60 days on the assignment, his rehab assignment would expire on September 1st, at which point he could be reinstated to the Cubs MLB Active List (active rosters expand on 9/1).

So I would not be too surprised if Smyly begins his Article XIX-C Rehab Assignment next week and stays on it for two months (60 days), probably beginning in AZL rookie ball in Mesa and then gradually working his way up to AAA Iowa in August. And if there are no medical setbacks, he could actually be 100% totally stretched-out as a starter and be able to throw 100+ pitches and start every 5th day by September 1st (if all goes well).

bryant to the 10-day DL...rut roh.

underwood to AAA...hancock also to the DL.

maples, bote, and farrell up.

Zobrist 2B, Heyward RF, Baez 3B, Rizzo 1B, Contreras C, Schwarber LF, Happ CF, Russell SS, Lester P

How did Hancock get hurt? Hopefully KB returns at the earliest possible date. Looking forward to seeing Maples, although he may not be here long with Chatwood only allowed to be on the paternity list until after tomorrow's game and Morrow could come off the DL.

Oh, I meant when did Hancock get hurt? He pitched last night and this injury seemed to come out of nowhere. I would assume that something flared up after his outing last night.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be heard...unedited. 40 years, wow.

Does he have any options left, Phil?

Richard Lovelady one walk & 20 K, 22 hits but no HR, high ERA, and two-to-one GB to FB in 12.1 IP, so I would guess that's why he got the call. Sort of the exact opposite of Luke Little.

Definitely surprised about Dick Lovelady. He has a phenomenal name but that’s probably the best thing he’s got. I was kinda hoping for Wieck even though he’s apparently still tossing 86 as his heater

wicks 15d DL...cubs select...get ready for this one...richard f'n lovelady.  lovelady's stregnths include being able to throw a ball left handed and that's about it.

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.
