Cubs @ Indians: Arrieta vs Tomlin (Game 178; World Series Game 6)

Cubs 9, Indians 3
W: Arrieta (2-1); L: Tomlin (2-1)
Series tied: 3-3PREVIEW
CHC (2-3): RHP Jake Arrieta (1-1, 3.78)
CLE (3-2): RHP Josh Tomlin (2-0, 1.76)
First pitch: 7:08pmCST

Arrieta won Game Two of the World Series in Cleveland, taking a no-hitter into the 6th inning and giving up 1 ER in 5.2. He struck out 6 and walked 3.

Tomlin had a no-decision in Game Three at Wrigley on Friday, going 4.2 scoreless. Like Bauer and Kluber, he’ll be going on short rest.

Game Seven would be Hendricks versus Kluber tomorrow at 7:00pmCST. Yes, please.

Go Cubs!

Comments

It's simultaneously a relief and an agony to know that nothing I do will have any effect on these games.

If this Cubs offense squares Tomlin up this time, I'll try not to complain about whatever else happens. I'll probably fail (especially with Joe West behind the plate), but I'll try.

Hey Cubs season will end (after game 7 win) closer to Thanksgiving rather than Labor Day (old dreary past)

from the twitter sidebar and Buster Olney

Re: Joe West behind the plate: Arrieta 2 career starts with West HP, 13 IP, 2.08 ERA, 4 BB/9 Ks; Tomlin, 3 g., 13.2 IP, 4.61 ERA, 4 BB/7 Ks

Russell is 1st Cub EVER to hit a WS Grand Slam. Plus his 6 rbi's tie him with only 3 others for a single game WS record.

There's a possible point In this game where Maddon will have to decide whether to keep going with Arrieta or pull him so he could possibly pitch an inning or two tomorrow

here's hoping for a healthy chapman tomorrow... ...or he can come out and continue pitching to protect a 5 run lead. alright, then. at least he's not injured.

Joe West made it all the way to 2 out in the 9th before making it about him.....so close.

Gotta love how Arrieta never let him bother him with two obviously blown called strike threes. Lackey would have imploded. You knew it was going to be a good night for Jake when got the strikeout on the 97 mph heater in the first. They said later in the broadcast that that was only the second time all season he's hit 97.

Think KB and Rizz like hitting 3/4? Oh, this lineup next year....and tomorrow night!

On another note, Pete Rose is acting like an ignorant douche bag on the postgame show. Probably angry that he was the only one of the four to pick the Indians to win tonight before the game started.

as for that Chapman thing, yeah it was a little overkill, BUT....

- Cubs don't give a shit bout chapman's arm long term, he won't be a Cub next year

- as I've been hinting at and Strop showed us, they don't seem to trust anyone but Chapman at moment.  With middle of lineup coming up, it was the opportune time to bring him in.

- I'm sure he'll still go 2-3 innings tomorrow if needed and if he blows it, Maddon knows he's going to get the blame. Good for Maddon for not caring and doing whatever it takes to get the win.

- on the other hand, a bit silly to not have someone warming up in 9th but ultimately Chapman didn't even throw that many pitches

- Lester, Lackey and even Arrieta should all be available. 3 guys they probably trust more than anyone else in the pen besides Chapman and maybe Montgomery.

Lets do this!

I might be on the bring Lester in to pitch a couple innings band wagon now. Hendricks goes 4-5 if effective, Lester goes 1-2, some combo of Montgomery, Edwards, Grimm to get the game to Chapman? Gotta score some runs off of Kluber early. I hope Rizzo and maybe Schwarber back off the plate a couple of inches in order to deal with that two-seamer.

"This is only the 3rd Game 7 of the live ball era in which both SP had 5+ bWAR (Saberhagen & Tudor in 1985, Clemens & Schilling in 2001)."

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.

  • crunch (view)

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

  • crunch (view)

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.

  • crunch (view)

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.

  • crunch (view)

he's hugging canario in the dugout cuz morel will shrivel up and die if he doesn't hug at least a dozen people a day.

  • crunch (view)

    and morel is injured...nice.

morel trying to play LF from 3rd...runs into canario while leaping and comes down ribs/arm-first.

hopefully he sticks around to finish this terrible game, or at least is going to avoid the IL.
