Cubs @ Indians: Hendricks vs Kluber (Game 179; World Series Game 7)

The Cubs defeat the Indians 7-6 in Game Seven to win the World Series, 4-3. They are world champions. Holy crap. We did it!

PREVIEW
CHC (3-3): RHP Kyle Hendricks (1-1, 1.31)
CLE (3-3): RHP Corey Kluber (4-1, 0.89)
First pitch: 7:00pmCST

Hendricks has been solid all post-season, even with the misfortune of being matched up against Kershaw twice. He went 4.1 innings of scoreless ball in Game Three. He struck out 6 and walked 2. The Cubs went on to lose 1-0, despite numerous chances. Let’s hope that doesn’t prove to be the decisive game.

Lester (3-1, 1.93) will probably be the first out of the pen and hopefully can close it out. After Contreras’ sometimes-struggles behind the plate, we should expect to see Ross in there, too, when the time comes.

Chapman (1-0, 2.08) is the other pitcher Joe trusts. After throwing 20 pitches in 1.1 innings in Game Six, he will certainly be available for an inning or more.

Kluber is back on short rest for the Indians, after getting the win in Games One and Four. He’s held the Cubs to 9 hits and 1 ER in 12 innings, striking out 15 and walking 1. Clearly, that can't last.

More troubling perhaps is that the Cleveland pen is rested and ready. Miller (2-0, 0.53 in 17 post-season innings) threw 27 pitches in Saturday’s loss. He threw 46 pitches in Game One, so Francona will throw him as long as he’s effective. Allen (0-0, 0.00 in 11.2 innings) threw 36 pitches in Sunday’s win. Bauer (0-2, 5.54) will also be available, so we should hope to see him, rather than these guys.

This is it, gang. For the last time this season...Go Cubs!

The Great Maddonnini and his team made some great "half time" adjustments for yesterday's game on Tomlin's breaking stuff. I'll be interested if they can figure out Kluber on the third time around. I don't drink these days and unlike most people my age I have no prescriptions. I don't even smoke pot anymore. I have NO idea how I'm going to get through this game.

I have some concern about Chapman's loss of velocity against the last batter he faced last night. He was 96-97 on his fastball with only one reaching 99. I don't think he can sustain his velocity very far into an outing. Something to keep in mind for tonight.

Hmmm...rain in the forecast starting between 10pm-11pm EDT. I travelled today to Cleveland -- for a meeting, not Game 7, sadly -- everybody at O'Hare was wearing Cubs stuff. Guys in suits wearing Cubs hats. They played "Go Cubs Go" at the gate when we boarded. The flight attendant asked if there were any Cleveland fans on the flight. A few people whooped. "Well, now is your last chance to de-plane." Very fun stuff.

Dexter Fowler, CF Kyle Schwarber, DH Kris Bryant, 3B Anthony Rizzo, 1B Ben Zobrist, LF Addison Russell, SS Willson Contreras, C Jason Heyward, RF Javier Baez, 2B Lineup sucks. But for real, I think it's the same lineup as yesterday.

And the equally-imposing Cleveland lineup... Carlos Santana, DH Jason Kipnis, 2B Francisco Lindor, SS Mike Napoli, 1B Jose Ramirez, 3B Lonnie Chisenhall, RF Rajai Davis, CF Coco Crisp, LF Roberto Perez, C

Jack Magruder @JackMagruder #Cubs Lester probably has a "solid two innings," MGR Maddon said, since this would be his normal throw day between starts.

The Cubs have claimed 28-year old RHRP Conor Mullee off waivers from the New York Yankees.

Because he was on the Yankees 60-day DL (carpal tunnel syndrome), he can be transferred directly to the Cubs 60-day DL and not have to be placed on the Cubs MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) at this time.

Players on an MLB 60-day DL must be reinstated no later than 5 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day after the last game of the World Series (which will be next Monday), but Article XX-B free-agents are automatically taken off the 40-man roster at 9 AM (Eastern) on the day after the last game of the World Series (which will be tomorrow) and the Cubs have at least six of them -- Cahill, Chapman, Coghlan, Ross, Smith, and Wood for sure, plus possibly Fowler (mutual option), Hammel (club option), and Kawasaki (player option) -- so there will be no problem finding a 40-man roster slot for Mullee next Monday when he will need to be reinstated from the 60-day DL.

Also, as I reported here last month (and you read it here first), C-INF Ben Carhart has officially retired and will be a coach in the Cubs system in 2017 (he made his debut as a coach at AZ Instructs last month).

Whoops.

yes. i sat through an intentional tanking shit show for years. recent history is littered with more than a few teams that should have "torn it down" but they didn't and won the whole thing. 5 in a row wouldn't change it. i watch pretty much every game. it was torture knowing it was over before spring training broke with almost 100% certainty only to sit down to a 162 bite shit sandwich. some people liked it. some didn't. i didn't...never will.

AMAZING! And the best part about all this? There's always next year...

Finally, the hot stove league can begin. Wow! Everybody contributes! Schwarber, Almora's baserunning, CJ and Monty somehow get the last outs.

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

  • crunch (view)

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

  • crunch (view)

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.

  • crunch (view)

he's hugging canario in the dugout cuz morel will shrivel up and die if he doesn't hug at least a dozen people a day.
