Cubs @ Phillies: Darvish vs. Smyly (Game 121)

CHC (65-56): RHP Yu Darvish (4-6, 4.43 ERA)
PHI (62-58): LHP Drew Smyly (2-6, 6.96 ERA)
First pitch 6:05pmCDT

Yu Darvish continued to get hurt by the long ball, allowing three homeruns in what seemed like it should have been a stellar start last time out. He struck out nine and walked none, but gave up three homeruns and four earned runs in Cincinnati. His strikeouts and walks have been trending in the ace direction for about two months. Citizen's Bank is not, however, a good place to hide out from the dinger. Harper is 0-2 with a walk against Darvish. Dickerson is 4-10 with a homerun, and Cesar Hernandez is 4-8 with a triple.Drew Smyly has made 13 starts and 17 total appearances this year, striking out more than a batter per inning but also allowing 4.92 walks per nine and 2.76 homeruns per nine. He's made four starts with the Phillies (since coming over from the Rangers), and he's had two good starts and two bad starts. His two most recent starts were the latter--he's allowed nine earned runs on eleven hits, four walks, and four homeruns in his last 10.2 innings pitched. Against Smyly, Castellanos is 3-8 with two doubles and Lucroy is 1-5 with a homerun. No other active Cubs have faced him.

RHRP James Norwood up, RHP Alec Mills down (since Mills probably not available until next Tuesday).

almora / cast / bryant / rizzo / baez / bote(2nd) / schwarb / caratini / darvish

it's worth mentioning that bote has an ob% around .390 the past month or so.  just saying...you know...almora and stuff.

javy "felt ill" so we got a new lineup...

rizzo / cast / bryant / shwarb / happ(2nd) / bote(SS) / caratini / darvish / almora

This kind of shit happens in the ninth when your only true shortstop is hurt/sick and out of the game. Yikes

OMG - Happ - brutal

The Happ/ Bote double play combo making a case for never again being the double play combo!

nothing says "4 run lead in the 9th" like getting your 3rd pitcher in the inning.

cubbery everywhere.

Looking back, having Darvish hit for himself in the eight would have been the better play. Trust Kemp at second moreso than Happ

Boxscore is going to not tell the true story of this one, particularly Wick’s line.

No one probably feels worse than Javy, figuratively and literally

This is what happens when the Cubs pretend Ian Happ is an MLB 2B, Bote is an MLB SS, 2019 Pedro Strop is anything other than mop up relief, and Joe Maddon is the guy to get the best out of this team.

I didn't see the game last night, but it sounds like Philly's revenge on Bote.

Has seemed like a lost season for a long time, but the strange thing is they're still in the thick of it, and meanwhile the starting rotation is shaping up better than we expected for a stretch run. Anything could happen.

If you're looking for a team that's more predictable/reliable, the Bears get going pretty soon.

this is one of those losses, where if the cubs slide out of 1st or the wildcard next month...people will point to this game as a low point marching towards that end result.

it's a brutal loss that could have happened just as easily in april, but this one was one of those oldschool heart crushing losses that felt doomed before harper hit the grand slam.

cubs still have a more than average shot at the postseason, even ending in 1st, but this was a deflating loss.

come back javy...heyward, you come back, too.

also, i dunno if they can even mess around with not having a.russell up ASAP if javy's illness is more than a 1-night off thing.  the middle IF gave away a few outs tonight.

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

  • crunch (view)

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

  • crunch (view)

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.

  • crunch (view)

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.

  • crunch (view)

he's hugging canario in the dugout cuz morel will shrivel up and die if he doesn't hug at least a dozen people a day.
