Cubs @ Reds: Butler vs Stephens (Game 81)

CHC (40-40): RHP Eddie Butler (4-2, 3.71)
CIN (34-45): RHP Jackson Stephens (0-0, —)
First pitch: 3:10pmCST

Stephens makes his MLB debut, the fifth starter and eighth pitcher to do so this season for the Reds. He was 4-4 with a 4.97 in 14 starts (15 appearances) for AAA-Louisville, where he spent most of the season. If we don’t light this guy up, I might need to take a break from baseball for a few days--maybe early next week.

Butler, who seems to pitch every other day, went 5 scoreless in DC for the win on Monday. He was 2-1 with a 3.20 in his five June starts. Overall, the Reds are 12-29 (.414) against him, which included a typical 8 ER, 4 inning start in Colorado last year. Votto is 4-8, and Cozart is 2-5 with a HR.

Arrieta (7-6) versus Adleman (5-4) tomorrow at 12:10pmCST to close out the weekend series.

Go Cubs!

KB back in lineup batting 2nd and playing 3rd. The rest of the lineup is 1 LF Jay 3 1B Rizzo 4 C Contreras 5 RF Happ 6 SS Russell 7 2B Baez 8 CF Almora. Have a feeling this is going to be a day both teams challenge for double digits.

Former Cubs pitching prospect Paul Blackburn to make his MLB debut today for A's against Braves.

well that sucked. cubs have reached the half-way point of the season. 40-41 boo. also, brewers won.

"Jason Heyward (hand) will begin a minor league rehab assignment with Low-A South Bend on Sunday."

This was the game that ended the season for me. I can no longer take this team seriously. The Reds -- The Reds! -- start a minor league pitcher -- no, wait, a BAD minor league pitcher! -- who gets the win and drives in the tying and winning runs. Funny, if it weren't so damn sad. I can remember many, may worse seasons, but I don't remember one that was less fun than this one. Theo miscalculated terribly. Schwarber isn't the next Babe Ruth, the current rotation has 4 #5 starters, and Fowler was much more valuable than Theo realized. Time to look to 2018.

yeah, montero tried that and look what happened... :( seriously, though...this SP crew is killing me. the bats have been sketchy, but it seems like it's the SP that's been consistently disappointing all year. even lester isn't pitching like an ace even though he's the high water mark for all the team's starters.

Well, game 29 on the year was a hell of a game. That felt like a throwback, too. I had a feeling Morel had a shot at catching up to that fastball.

    Phil,

Any thoughts/details on Carico and/or JP Wheat?

    MIL loses!

cubs finally get to sole control of 1st place in the central.

MIL out here stealing 3rd with 1 out and down by 1 in the bottom 9th.

it worked.  this MIL team is annoyingly fun to watch so far this year...

  • crunch (view)

it took him 24 pitches, 2 walks, 2 Ks...but he got it done.  woo.

    Full pack!

neris still doesn't have his command/control...

i don't expect it to dog him all season, much like i don't expect alzolay to be a HR machine.

i'll take alzolay over neris to close out a game, though...over leiter, too.

MOREL HR!  his first homer in like, 3 years or something...or feels like it.

top of the 9th, 2 run shot off f'n diaz to break the tie.

swanson breaks it up in the 8th with a single.

1h and 6 minutes to get through 6 innings.

also, the cubs are getting no-hit.  neat.
