from an article in the Athletic by Patrick Mooney (paywall)…

“Once top pitching prospect Ben Brown (lat) comes off the injured list at Triple-A Iowa, the Cubs will likely begin converting him to the bullpen to see how his stuff might play in shorter bursts at Wrigley Field.”

It's been done successfully before. Recall, that is how Wainwright was used when he first got to StL. "Wainwright made his MLB debut on September 11, 2005, and spent the rest of the season as a relief pitcher. The next year, he briefly assumed closer duties, saving the series-clinching games of the 2006 National League Championship Series and the 2006 World Series over the Detroit Tigers."

Ben Brown fueled Visons of SugarPlum fairies dancing in my head.

Wiki on the 2006 Cards:

All this led to a difficult season, despite that quick start, one that included two eight-game losing streaks (the longest such streaks for the franchise since 1988) and a seven-game losing streak, losing months in June, August and September, and an 83-78 record, the worst for the Cardinals since the 1999 team finished 75-86. However, that record was still good enough to finish first in a weak National League Central. On the season's final day, the Cardinals made the playoffs for the sixth time in the last seven seasons, edging the second-place Houston Astros by a game and a half. Once the playoffs began, the lightly regarded Cardinals surprised baseball fans everywhere by beating the San Diego Padres in the four-game Division Series, beating the New York Mets in the seven-game NLCS, and beating the Detroit Tigers in the 2006 World Series four games to one

Some commentary on the bullpen. Might make sense regarding a Ben Brown audition. Too bad Keegan Thompson lost his mojo this year.

Jordan Bastian from mlb pipeline: “One layer of risk involves workload, though. Merryweather is at a career-high in MLB innings already and has not thrown this much since 2017, when he was a starter in the Minors. Alzolay is carrying a heavy load after missing most of ‘22 due to injury woes.”

Giving up 6 extra base hits in an inning is, ah, something I didn’t expect to see today. Run Differential Correction gods weighing in hard today.

so now we're going to waste wesn on this shitshow game?  are they really going to go with a lesser option or a f'n bullpen game tomorrow?  probably be assad for no good reason...geez...THIS game is an assad game.

Keegan got rocked last night. Two quick outs, then a single & back to backers. Threw strikes at least. PCA still looking for his first Triple A hit.

cubs finish the season with 4 games @ATL and 3 @MIL.  no matter what happens between those 7 games, the last 7 are a gauntlet.

if the cubs are still in it for those series i'll be happy.  if they make it until the MIL series and things still matter, very happy.  if they actually win it, division or wildcard shot, extremely happy.

at this point i just want to be entertained.  baseball is an entertainment product and it's nice to actually care in august after the last 2 seasons where it didn't really matter before the all-star break rolled around.

i really wish they would have snagged a significant pen arm.  having alzolay go 1.1 - 1.2ip in somewhat close games more than rarely isn't a great thing.  3 innings left for ATL to bat and JD + boog + most of cubs nation are expecting to see alzolay go more than 1 inning.

MIL + CIN lose...cubs win!  13 wins in the last 16 games.

I was hoping to get at least one win against the Braves - this is great!  Play a three game series against them in Atlanta at the end of September, best case scenario they’re resting regulars for the playoffs.  Last three games of the season are In Milwaukee.

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

  • crunch (view)

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.
