Cubs vs Phillies: Series Thread (Games 77-79

The Cubs return from the UK to take on the Phillies at Wrigley. They'll enter the series 37-39, within striking distance of .500 and only a few games back in an NL Central that appears available to whichever team is hot at the time. The 40-37 Phillies, however, have a much tougher environment and find themselves 10.5 back in the NL East and near the back end of the Wild Card pack. See below for daily matchups.

Game 77, Tuesday, June 27, 7:05 pm central
CHC: TBD
PHL: LHP Ranger Suarez (1-2, 3.50 ERA)

Game 78, Wednesday, June 28, 7:05 pm central
CHC: TBD
PHL: RHP Aaron Nola (6-5, 4.38 ERA)

Game 79, Thursday, June 29, 7:05 pm central
CHC: TBD
PHL: RHP Taijuan Walker (8-3, 4.10 ERA)

Perlaza is never going to get a chance.

Jed/Ross don't like Morel at 3B, so Madrigal is staying there, forcing Morel to the DH spot.

Perlaza will walk in the off season to another organization.

All he's done is hit. He's on pace for 16 HR and 40+ doubles. 40!!!

Switch hitter !! Almost identical #'s from both sides.

Mancini. Hosmer. Mastrobuoni. Madrigal. They got DH ABs for two months.

Shame

If you don't like the way Ross uses his position Players, lobby Jed. The Roster comes from Jed. I would have launched Mancini, Barnhart, Madrigal, Rios, and Mastrobouni a month ago.

Any MLB Manager will play all the position players on his Roster. No Manager is going to walk by a player(s) he hasn't/isn't going to play except for 1-2 PHs a week. Not going to happen, his job is to keep 26 guys motivated.

I'm waiting to see how or if Jed retools this Roster at the deadline. Also, not holding my breath.

I think it’s kind of nuts that the Ricketts family limits their budget to the level they do given they’ve been able to essentially purchase the state of Nebraska and one of its senate seats, but on the other hand there are plenty of GMs that could create a much better team and system within that budget.

Its not even that the MLB team is underwhelming. It’s that we’ve had two bad seasons to collect prospects and we have topped out at 3 in the top 100. There’s a reason we’re usually in the middle or the back half of team rankings. The rest of the division has at least as many high level prospects if not more. I’m no expert but, with a few exceptions, it’s as though a lot of the team’s prospects peak right when they join the organization, or shortly after, then start to become less well rated.

Too true, maybe more managers rely on veterans than we would want? But if you call up a guy, it's because someone's not performing up to what the team considered satisfactory; playing the underperforming guys, even after their alternative option/replacement is called up and needs to be assessed, is beyond me............

suzuki woke up with "neck stiffness"...he's d2d or may even come off the bench tonight.  morel in RF because what the hell, whatever.

welcome back j.young....1st MLB homer off nola on a 0-2 count.  neat.

WE GOT A NEW SCHWINDY!  WOO!  seriously though, he's got more upside than schwindy.

Brandon Hughes surgery was an arthroscopic debridement (cleanup/smoothing/shaving of irregular surfaces but not a restoration of arthritic wear), not  the distal femoral osteotomy (angular realignment to shift the weight bearing away from the arthritic area) as previously expected. This has a much shorter recovery time and for an arthritic knee compartment has unpredictable results but could help yet burns no bridges. The osteotomy option will be there if this doesn’t help.

storms moving south of chicago, such as in the sparkling wine region of illinois, are clearing out the smoke, but chicago is still looking like downtown mumbai, india.

1- how much longer until a.wainright is DFA'd by the cards

2- wow, there are a lot of HOU fans at tonight's @STL game

ha.  i hear that, but i'll still mark out over w.contreras.  the bat has been poor, and his "bad" defense this year is highly overstated and not that bad.  .214/.302/.370 is not getting it done for 17.5m a year...still, he's due for a 15+ HR and 30+ double season even though he's not getting on base a lot.

Jared Young slacking off tonite: only a rbi triple instead of a home run in his first at bat.

i miss insanely good defense happ.  2022 happ, easily the best LF i've seen a cubs player perform...not just notable, but insanely great.

kimbrel with an 8 pitch save, including a K.  phillies sweep.  cubs are 5 games under .500 with 4 losses in a row.

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.

  • crunch (view)

he's hugging canario in the dugout cuz morel will shrivel up and die if he doesn't hug at least a dozen people a day.

  • crunch (view)

    and morel is injured...nice.

morel trying to play LF from 3rd...runs into canario while leaping and comes down ribs/arm-first.

hopefully he sticks around to finish this terrible game, or at least is going to avoid the IL.

    Amen to that last point!
