Cubs vs. White Sox: Hamels vs. Nova (Game 72)

CHC (39-32): LHP Cole Hamels (6-2, 2.98 ERA)

CHW 3(34-36): RHP Ivan Nova (3-5, 6.28 ERA)

First pitch 7:05pmCDT

The Cubs return home to take on their cross-city rivals. They remain 0.5 games behind Milwaukee with the Cards lagging an additional two games behind the Cubs. Cole Hamels made his third start without an earned run, going seven innings with 9 strikeouts in Colorado last time out. Few White Sox have seen much of him. Jon Jay and his 13 at-bats are on the IL. Jose Abreu is 4-9 with a homerun off of him. Hamels has been a tremendous groundball pitcher this year, and the White Sox have the second highest GB% behind the Marlins--that may provide some incentive for Maddon to start his best defensive infield. The general impatience of the Sox lineup should play to Hamels' favor, although he seems to have harnessed his command of late.

The White Sox are hovering around .500 as they bring along some of their younger players. Key players Yoan Moncada and Lucas Giolito have taken big steps forward, and Tim Anderson is riding an early season hot streak to what look like breakout numbers. Former Cubs prospect Eloy Jimenez has looked overmatched at times, but his power has shown up and he does have a 127 wRC+ since returning from the IL on May 20. Ivan Nova gets the start. He's had a rough 2019 on the mound, getting generally knocked around. He allowed four earned runs in 5.1 innings against the Yankees in his last start. Current Cubs are 41-139 against him. Rizzo, Contreras, Gonzalez, Baez, and Heyward have all slugged over .500 against him. The Cubs have posted a team wRC+ of 85 since the beginning of June. Javy Baez hasn't walked  since May 31 and he's batting only .226 in June.

GM Jed Hoyer said Hendricks is dealing with an impingement in his throwing shoulder: "I feel like we got ahead of it. We're not sure how much time he'll miss, but we'll try to take it slow and take the length of the season into account."

sigh strop...

...and of course it's eloy that gives the WSox the 9th inning lead.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be heard...unedited. 40 years, wow.

Does he have any options left, Phil?

Richard Lovelady one walk & 20 K, 22 hits but no HR, high ERA, and two-to-one GB to FB in 12.1 IP, so I would guess that's why he got the call. Sort of the exact opposite of Luke Little.

Definitely surprised about Dick Lovelady. He has a phenomenal name but that’s probably the best thing he’s got. I was kinda hoping for Wieck even though he’s apparently still tossing 86 as his heater

wicks 15d DL...cubs select...get ready for this one...richard f'n lovelady.  lovelady's stregnths include being able to throw a ball left handed and that's about it.

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.
