Hammel beat Milwaukee (5.2 IP, 1 ER) on Friday. He likes pitching at night, going 5-2 with 2.06 in 13 starts. Hammel is 0-3 with a 3.07 ERA in 10 appearances against the Giants since 2009. They are 11-49 (.224) against him. Pagan is 3-9.

The 27y/o Heston pitched a few games for SF in September, so this is his first full year. He got roughed up in Texas (4.2, 3 ER) in his last start but went 3-0 with a 1.57 in July. The Cubs have never faced him.

Go Cubs!

BOB R: Unless a Cubs infielder goes down with an injury in the meantime, I suspect Tommy LaStella will be optioned to Iowa when he completes his Minor League Rehab Assignment at Tennessee.

If the Cubs wait until at least August 13th (next Thursday) to reinstate LaStella and option him to Iowa, and then recall him on September 1st when active list rosters expand, he won't burn a minor league option in 2015.

Interesting I hadn't thought about the option issue since he started the season with the team. While the 25 man roster is crowded with pitchers, assuming the Cubs want to give extra days off to Bryant and/or Castro I had assumed that LaStella would get recalled once he was healthy.

rizzo gets his 22nd HBP...off an area near the bottom of the knee. staying in the game (for now, hopefully for the rest of the game).

Woot!

When was the last time Soler had a 2-out RBI hit--May? Update: Actually, his last 3 RBIs (two separate ABs) came with 2 outs. It just seems like it's been forever.

Castro - batting 7th in front of pitcher 2 men on 2 out. 3-0 count you gotta take a swing at that FB down the middle. He just very rarely looks smart at the plate this year. He's just off most of the time. He's certainly never going to outsmart the pitcher.

Watched the inning this morning, and I thought the exact same thing, Carlito, about Castro taking the 3-0 fastball down the middle with two out, two on and the pitcher due next. But then he would have to be familiar with the batting order. Very, very hard to get through to that guy, to change his thought process at all. Still, I have noticed (or imagined) some improvement lately: if he manages to get one hard swing at a decent pitch, it's not a wasted at-bat. Even slow-pokes get there eventually, assuming they stay in the lineup, which he will do for the foreseeable future.

I've been trying to stay in Castro's corner. Not many Castro fans left these days. But he really makes my job of standing up for him very difficult. He had such a great game the other day, both in the field and at the plate. But then he watches a 3-0 watermelon, and eventually he'll boot an easy grounder to short in the ninth inning. Next game, he'll make a web gem play. If the Cubs play a one game playoff, and it's close in the late innings, I hope Maddon has the good sense to take him out for a defensive substitute. I just don't trust him out there. And it's too bad, because I really thought he was going to develop into an outstanding shortstop, not just a good one.

schwarb HR...woo. cubs up by 5 with 1 out in 2nd...awesome.

Not 100% sure but watching it was after 2 walks to open the 5th inning with a 3 run lead - think he was just ineffective. Didn't hear anything to the contrary. Also he had given up a few deep fly balls. Didn't seem to have his A stuff tonight.

That was actually the game right there. Maddon having the good instincts. He could see he was not throwing well - lots of hard hit balls. Then he walks two guys. That game could have gone the other direction fast. Nice bit of managing by the Great One.

Btw pretty sure the scouting report on the Cubs is 'don't throw strikes'. Even with their penchant for walks early in the season...

Leake out with a hammy, Vogelsong to start for SF tomorrow. Seize the opportunity! Also...Jon...we need 7+ good innings tomorrow, please -- back to back short starts. ....and, for the love of God, get Schwarber in the lineup.

I just looked at the rest of August schedules... Giants schedule next 2 weeks is very tough. Giants schedule after the Cubs series: Astros, Nationals, @Cardinals, @Pirates, Cubs, @Dodgers (Cubs play Brewers, @WSox, Tigers, Braves, Indians (makeup game), @Giants, @Dodgers) Giants schedule in Sept is easier (5 vs Dodgers, otherwise Reds, Padres, A's, Dbacks, Rockies). Cubs play 6 vs Stl and Pitt (each) in Sept (otherwise it's Dbacks, Phillies, Brewers, Reds and a makeup vs Royals)

Great win, and we need to find a way to keep Schwarber's bat in the line up.

Schwarber in LF, Coghlan at 2nd, Russell at SS, and Castro to the bench. So it begins.

Chris Coghlan is indeed a versatile player, although the Cubs didn't use him that way until fairly recently.

Coghlan was an All-American 3B at Ole Miss and also played 3B his first year in pro ball, was moved to 2B at Instructs post-2006 and played both 2B & 3B (mostly 2B) in 2007 and 2008, was moved to LF when he was called up to MLB by the Marlins in 2009, played both CF & LF (mostly CF) 2010-13, and RF & 1B (mostly RF) at Iowa in 2014 before getting called-up by the Cubs.

So it's not like Coghlan hasn't played other positions before. He can indeed play multiple positions (LF-CF-RF-3B-2B-1B). It's just that he is a below-average defender no matter where he plays, and a below-average defender can do less damage in LF than any other position.

BOB R: I agree. And I'm not saying that the Cubs shouldn't move Coghlan around and take advantage of his bat, because he can play multiple positions (or at least he knows the "mechanics" of other positions).

I'm only saying that Coghlan will probably get exposed (maybe not today, but eventually) if he plays positions other than LF, but also that it probably won't matter much if the Cub offense improves as a result.

It's not like Kris Bryant is a Gold Glove third-baseman, yet there is really no reason to move him to another position as long as he is a plus-contributor offensively and "out-hits" his errors. Same would apply to Coghlan when he plays 2B, 3B, CF, or RF.

There have been a number of defensively-challenged "offensive-first" super-subs and utility players who have been positibve contributors to winning teams.over the years. No reason why Coghlan can't be another one. But he is not a good defensive player, so Cub fans shouldn't expect too much.

I think it's becoming increasingly likely that the Cubs will attempt to acquiire Chase Utley from the Phillies (as has been reported elsewhere),

Utley has a terrible triple-slash line (157/257/279), but he puts the ball in play and doesn't strike out much (only 32 K in 249 PA), and he has been hitting in EXTREMELY bad luck this season (he has a .186 BABIP).

Utley is making $15M in 2015 (2/3 of the way through the season, so he is owed $5M) with a 2016-18 vesting option based on AB that is not going to vest, so a post-2015 $2M club buy-out is inevitable.

Presuming Utley's ankle is OK (he just got reinstated from the 15-day DL) and presuming he waives his "no-trade" right, I could see the Cubs and Phillies working out a waiver deal where the Philies pay a portion of the $7M Utley is owed ($5M left of 2015 salary plus the $2M post-2015 buy-out), and the Cubs send the Phils a second-tier prospect (maybe somebody like AA 2B Stephen Bruno).

A "rejuvenated" Utley could help the Cubs in the tradition of Gary Gaetii in 1998 or Jim Edminds in 2008.

If they just benched one of their franchise players (Castro) because he couldn't hit, I don't think they are going to give regular playing time to a 36-year-old, recovering from injury, who is hitting even worse! So I think for this to happen Utley would really have to play well for 2-3 weeks first. He hasn't played at all since June 22 and had a 179/257/275 slash line. If he is resembling his old self on 9/1 and they can get him cheap, then maybe something happens. But the fact that they didn't get Zobrist or anyone else at the deadline suggests to me that they think that Castro-Russell-Coghlan-LaStella-Baez are going to be good enough at SS-2B for the next 8 weeks.

Sweet.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be savored...unedited. 40 years, wow.
