Minor League Rosters
Rule 5 Draft
Minor League Free-Agents

He's a Robel

The Cubs have signed INF Robel Garcia to a 2019 minor league contract and he has been assigned to AAA Iowa.

The 25-year old switch-hitting Garcia was a member of the Italian National team that was a guest of the Oakland Athletics at Fitch Park in Mesa over the past month. (Ex-Cubs minor leaguers RHP Alessandro Maestri and C-1B Alberto Mineo were also on the squad). Besides working out with the A's minor leaguers, Team Italy participated in a dozen AZ Instructional League games, and that's where the Cubs saw Garcia play before offering him a contract. NOTE: While the Cubs did not field an AZ Instructs team this year, Cubs professional scouts did attend games.

Garcia played for UniPolsai Bologna (Fortitudo B. C. 1953) in 2018. He hit 281/343/490 and was 2nd in the league in triples and 10th in doubles during the regular season, before hitting .400 in the semifinali serie and .357 in the finale serie as he helped lead his club to the Federazione Italiana Serie A1 (the Italian major league) championship.

Signed by the Cleveland Indians out of the Dominican Republic as a 17-year old back in March 2010, Garcia spent four very uneventful seasons in the Indians farm system (hitting a combined 217/326/356 in 274 games) before being released at the end of Minor League Camp in 2014, but he didn't give up, so now he will get another chance with the Cubs.

Garcia probably projects as a AAA or AA utility infielder at this point, but time will tell.

and eventually, the Chi Tribune covers it.

the LA Times article is full of sour grapes phrases using words like Pedestrian, wild fluctuations, extremely poor seasons and market dwindled.  Sure, the story fits but it is a very glass-half-full take.

The contract would pay Bellinger $30 million in both 2024 and 2025, while paying a salary of $20 million in 2026 if he were to not opt out of the deal, according to Passan.

Cody Bellinger  - 3/$80 with opt outs each year. Now, LFG!!

    Per Jeff Passan

ump's zone almost all game was really small.

nice to see b.davis do something decent.  him, stumpf, and bote hit homers.  bote generally owns spring before settling into his role as a highly paid minor leaguer.

smyly didn't look great in the 1st, but the ump was squeezing the zone a bit too tight.  some of those called balls should have been strikes.

Phil, is CJ healthy enough to have a shot at the opening day roster?

Agreed crunch. I feel like the team could have taken themselves from “has a chance at the division” to “definite division favorite.”

    yeah, i like the team.

my main complaint isn't that they won't be competitive, rather that they could be even more competitive given their resources.  there's still time to add on, and they have 10s of millions to do it without going past their self-imposed limitations.  whether these limitations should exist or be way more flexible is up for debate, but we have what the owners give the front office to work with.

some of the sites doing wins predictions have CHC at or just below STL for taking the NL Central.

it's also nice knowing if some of the kids expected to break with the team don't work out, there's a good amount of kids near-MLB ready to hedge some of the failures...a few non-roster vets, too (peralta/d.smith/cj edwards).  no guarantees, but it's nice to have around.

i feel good about 2024 even without additions, but i'm still expecting an addition until the "Boras 4" are off the market.

if the cubs we see today are the cubs we get going into opening day, i will be disappointed, but i still think they got a shot at the playoffs.
