Indians @ Cubs: Kluber vs Lackey (Game 176; World Series Game 4)

Indians 7, Cubs 2
W: Kluber (4-1); L: Lackey (0-1)
Indians lead series: 3-1PREVIEW
CLE (2-1): RHP Corey Kluber (3-1, 0.74)
CHC (1-2): RHP John Lackey (0-0, 5.63)
First pitch: 7:08pmCST

Lackey gave up 2 ER in 4 innings in Game Four of the NLCS against the Dodgers. He went 7-4 with a 2.62 at Wrigley this year. These Indians are 41-176 (.233) against him. Davis is 12-35.

Kluber went 6 scoreless to win Game One of the World Series, striking out 9 and walking none. He was 8-4 with a 3.03 on the road this season. He’s going on short rest, so we’ll see how that works out. The Cubs are 4-41 (.098) against him--so very due. Rizzo, Ross, and Coghlan are all 1-3. Zobrist is 1-13.

Bauer versus Lester tomorrow at 7:05pmCST for Game Five.

Go Cubs!

Once again, there is doubt. We have been here before...down 3 runs to SF in the 9th with Cueto looming....down 2-1 to the Dodgers with 2 more to play in LA....and now, down 2-1 with a tough pitching match-up. LEAVE NO DOUBT! KNOCK KLUBER OUT!

"According to toxicology reports released on Saturday, Jose Fernandez had cocaine and alcohol in his system when he and two friends were killed in a tragic boating accident in late September." the coke was a "trace" amount, fwiw. beyond that, he wasn't driving. "the report concludes that the driver of the boat had been driving with "recklessness" which was "exacerbated by the consumption of alcohol"" sad. sure, he could have mark prior'd his arm into obscurity at any point, but it still feels like we lost an opportunity to see a 1st ballot HOF career unfold. as a fan, that really sucks even if he was pitching for the "wrong" team.

Heyward in RF batting 7th, Javy batting 8th. Hopefully the second time facing Kluber is the charm.

Feel a lot like the Mets series last year. Just completely dominated, outplayed and out coached in all facets. Sad. I don't think we are out of it....but feels like a death march. Sad, but truly just getting here made it an amazing and unforgetable season.

I am sick and tired of the phrase "He can spin a baseball". Won't miss Buck and Smoltz. Smoltz should know about playoff failures -- Braves won their division 14 straight years (ex strike year), only won the WS once. Hard to blame Smoltz, though: 15-4, 4 Sv, 1 BLSv, 2.69 ERA in the post-season.

I think it’s a bit of a chicken or egg scenario. Did they make these trades because they saw what was coming and weren’t impressed and knew to keep up with the demand for constant winning thru had to acquire impact players? Or did those additions cause a failure of resource allocation elsewhere.

In addition, the whole they traded to acquire a star, that’s precisely what organizations should do if they feel they’re a piece away. Keep developing talent, but sometimes you need to supplement that talent. It’s what the best run organizations do. Atlanta does it. Houston in their prime run did it. Nationals during their prime run did it. Of course dodgers did it. Boston and Philadelphia too. Hell, the Cubs did it when they won. There’s no team that has had sustained success that has solely relied on their own internal development. It just doesn’t happen. I wouldn’t fault St Louis for that. What I suspect happened is in that 2020 season, in an effort to save money, they cut budget from developing and scouting. Or maybe the wrong guys got poached by other orgs. Regardless, blaming the acquisition of two of the best players of their generation for peanuts, seems off base to me.

I do agree that we’ve more or less come to the same conclusion, but our paths to that conclusion contain almost no crossover. I think we can also agree that seeing the cardinals struggle brings a warmth to our hearts.

Very well played game all around tonight.

best starter and 2 top hitters from the team gone...and they keep on winning.

little ahead of myself here, but the RSox got 9 outs to find 6+ runs.

Richard Gallardo just left the Smokies game with an arm injury after going to the ground following a pitch. Doesn’t sound good at all.

Phil, do you think Wiggins will start out in ACL?
