AZ Phil, how has Jonathan Sierra looked in general? I seem to recall rave reviews last spring for his work ethic, but he struggles a good bit in the AZL. Haven’t heard much about him this spring. Any thoughts on his development so far? Do you think he’ll be up in Eugene when their season starts?

BRADSBEARD: Jonathan Sierra will likely be assigned to Eugene, but he hasn't developed quite as was expected from his original projection. I mean, he's not another Darryl Strawberry.

Sierra is a good outfielder with a plus arm and he runs the bases well, but he's an extreme pull hitter (opposing teams use an infield shift on him even in Extended Spring Training games) who hits the ball on the ground a lot and doesn't show much power in games (although he does in BP). But there is no point in having him repeat AZL. He needs to move along.

Actually, the left-handed hitting outfielder who's the hitter the Cubs thought Sierra would become is Abraham Rodriguez. He can really rake. Rodriguez laces line-drives foul line to foul line, and he hits HR in games, too. But he is defensively challenged no matter where he plays (1B-LF-RF). BTW, Rodriguez would have played in the AZL last year, but he missed the entire 2017 season after undergoing shoulder surgery in April.

Probably the only position players at Cubs Extended Spring Training right now who have a shot at skipping AZL and going directly to Eugene are C Alexander Guerra (who is 21 years old and played a couple of seasons in Serie Nacional in Cuba prior to defecting), SS-3B Christopher Morel  (who is probably one of the Cubs Top 10 prospects), and C Jonathan Soto (the Cubs #2 catching prospect, behind only Miguel Amaya), and maybe CF Fernando Kelli (the fastest player in the organization).

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.

he's hugging canario in the dugout cuz morel will shrivel up and die if he doesn't hug at least a dozen people a day.

  • crunch (view)

    and morel is injured...nice.

morel trying to play LF from 3rd...runs into canario while leaping and comes down ribs/arm-first.

hopefully he sticks around to finish this terrible game, or at least is going to avoid the IL.
