Sunday Funnies: What Matt Williams said to get tossed.

In last night's Nationals/Giants game, tension boiled over in the bottom of the 10th when home plate ump Vic Carapazza called Nat Asdrubal Cabrera out on a 2nd high strike.
Cabrera threw down his bat and had a hissy in the ump's face, and the ump gives him the thumb.
Duh.
Matt Williams came out directly and got the same treatment.
But this was a moment of absolute uncool by a manager that needed to regain control rather than lose it.
And maybe... maybe he had other stuff - not up front, but somewhere waaaay in the back of his mind...

Earlier, right after Williams pulled Jordan Zimmerman with one out to go in a game Zimmerman had completely dominated, you knew there was the giant possibility that everything would go wrong.
It did.
Hey.
The day before we all saw Don Mattingly leave Clayton Kershaw in and look what happened there.
Professional Baseball Manager.
Sometimes, that is one tough job.

Captain Happy has a pretty quick hook and he hates walks. I can't wait to see everyone rip him apart during the playoffs, because it will mean the Cubs are in the playoffs.

In other sports news, Jay Cutler's head remains completely embedded in his ass. Nice job of turning 4-1 into 2-3.

I've always been a bit of Jay defender, not the kind that would really get into an argument in a sports forum about it, but just a bit of one, especially when people called him soft, which I don't think he is. But he's been in the league awhile now, I am not going to look it up even though it's a click away but I'm guessing damn near 10 years, at least 8, okay, dammit, I'll look it up. Okay, 8 years. So, that's enough time to finally get the hang of things, right? I never thought he was really the type that could win a super bowl for you without everything going really, really right, but I did have some hope that he'd be, well, better than he is. 8 years and he's still somebody that maybe Trestman can turn into a good QB. That's not really going very well. He's fun to watch when he's slinging it well, but the interceptions are boneheaded and painful to watch. The other bummer for me is I had pretty high hopes with Trestman, and those are fading. I don't really care about some of the occasional odd play calling, any coach will do that. They really wouldn't matter if the rest of the team played well and that's where this coach is failing. His special teams unit and defense are a disaster, and that is on him, because he's the head coach. I was having a discussion here with someone a few weeks ago and the poster was complaining that Bearrs fans always want defense and don't like seeing the Bears change. I love a good offense as much as anyone, but I actually now am longing for the days when even when the Bears were bad, a team dreaded having to face their defense and at least had to lick their wounds the next day. This defense is a joke. Yeah, Tucker sucks, but at the end of the day this is all on Trestman. I mean, crap what happened in the second half? It seemed like they were putting pressure and it *seemed* like they weren't doing cover 2 so much in the first half, but I wasn't watching super closely. I wasn't paying enough attention though maybe, and so maybe Carolina just made adjustments. Either way, Trestman was NOT making adjustments, another strike against him. So now, it looks like we'll have to deal with yet another group of coaching changes, maybe even a GM change, since this team just isn't very good. I hope I'm wrong and Trestman gets some of that golden boy aura he had a little of last year. I really wanted him to succeed. I'm definitely a big skeptic now.

The D gave Cutler the ball at midfield with 6 minutes to go and a 3-point lead -- a good offense puts the game away. Instead, Cutler throws a bonehead pick -- high throw over the middle to...Santonio Holmes? Ummm...how about using your Pro Bowl WRs? The D bails him out with a 3 & out FG. Then Forte fumbles on a routine tackle. Trestman's offense is a reflection of the head coach -- doesn't perform well under pressure (i.e. 2nd halves) and has shown no backbone (Marshall and Briggs walked all over him with off-field conflicts). Another season of annoying mediocrity looms. Sigh.

Panthers were giving the short field to the Bears and the Bears played right into the strategy, and Cutler obliged with his interceptions. They should have flooded the middle of the zone with receivers, instead they kept sending the big wideouts deep. Trestman is getting outcoached in the critical area of adjustments, and it's becoming a pattern.

i know BAL is in year 3 of being good and KC is in year 2, but it's still weird to think about a KC/BAL championship series being a legit thing.

White Sox DFA Bailey Horn. I'm thinking the Cubs would love to get him back although they probably won't have a decent chance of claiming him without another swap.

WSox also call up former Cub Rafael Ortega (and additionally Tommy Pham). They are hurting and having a gawd awful April.

    White Sox DFA'd Bailey Horn.

He wasn't producing good results in Charlotte (AAA).

But Jed might bring him back with that open 40man spot. Then try the "sneak him thru waivers" gambit.

    One more thing...

One of the reasons I come to this site...

...in addition to Arizona Phil, who is, as we all know, a treasure trove of well-written fresh information, honest evaluation, and sneaky-subtle humor regarding the entire Cub organization...

... is CubbyBlue and Tim's fantastic and timely visual takes on the Cubs (to be fair, he does have a much broader Chicago-flavored brush well beyond the Cubs).  Thanks for so many memorable images.  I am fortunate to own (one of my prize possessions) a print that I framed (55/200) of "The Last Out" with KB's shit-eating grin as he fields the series winning out of the 2016 WS.

Tim, will you visit me if I do the text security thingy and description: Tim S? Or will I find myself in a Cub detention cell.

i.e. "or send a text message to 773-839-**** with the keyword "Friendly" and include your seat location and a description of your issue.

Incredible moment. Huge part of the fun of working there is when something magic like that happens, and you get to interact with baseball fans.

That bear hug was indeed awesome. Word is that Dansby has become an outstanding clubhouse leader and that moment really demonstrated it. That reaction was one of a proud coach/mentor who’s student just excelled. I’m not even sure who was more overjoyed, Dansby or PCA. A veteran expressing that kind of unabashed support and enthusiasm for a struggling rookie is beyond fantastic to see.
