Trey Martin Celebrates Return to Lineup with Home Run

Trey Martin (on AA Tennessee 7-day DL since April 15th) blasted a solo HR, Jonathan Sierra ripped an RBI triple, singled and scored, and stole a base, Rafael Narea singled, walked twice, and stole three bases, and SP Javier Assad hurled three innings of shutout ball with five strikeouts, helping the Cubs defeat the Diamondbacks 6-2 in Memorial Day Cactus League game action Monday morning on Field #1 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

Cubs 2016 23rd round draft pick Delvin Zinn (March 2017 stress fracture in right foot) saw his first game action since Minor League Camp, playing 2nd base for five innings and going 0-2 with a walk. Zinn was also drafted by the Cubs out of HS in 2015 but did not sign, instead opting to attend Mississippi State and play baseball and basketball. But he transferred to Itawamba JC after only one semester at MSU, before being drafted by the Cubs for the second year in a row last June. Today is Zinn's 20th birthday.

Reaching base three times today, 19-year old Rafael Narea has gone 18-40 (.450) over his last 14 games since starting the Cactus League EXST season 0-14. Thanks to his recent hot streak, Narea is now hitting 333/463/429 in 21 Cactus League EXST games (67 PA) with only two strikeouts, a team-leading nine walks (Miguel Amaya is second with eight), and a team-leading ten SB (no other Cubs player has more than three). Hre also has two doubles, a home run, and eight RBI. Signed as a 16-year old IFA in July 2014, Narea is an above-average defender at three infield positions (SS, 2B, and 3B).

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

m.trout, on the DL for the 1st time in his career, will undergo ligament surgery on his thumb and miss 6-8 weeks.

Schwarber has been very unlucky (low BABIP). But I think he should be sent to AAA for a week. Get called back up when he gets hot. He needs to heat up in order to boost his confidence.

they could call back up that dude with the .484 ob% they sent down a couple weeks ago...let him battle j.jay for 5-10 PA a week. i dunno what schwarb needs, but i'm pretty sure he doesn't need to hit 1st or 2nd while it's being figured out. his past 5+ weeks has been sub-.250ob% ball and it's not like he was tearing it up before then.

best starter and 2 top hitters from the team gone...and they keep on winning.

little ahead of myself here, but the RSox got 9 outs to find 6+ runs.

Richard Gallardo just left the Smokies game with an arm injury after going to the ground following a pitch. Doesn’t sound good at all.

Phil, do you think Wiggins will start out in ACL?

The level of conversation on this site is intelligent, reasoned and informative. Miles ahead of other Cub sites.

Wiggins last threw "live" BP three weeks ago before being shut down for a couple of weeks, and this was the first time Roberts has thrown to hitters in almost two years.
