Watson Game Is Afoot at Indian School Park

LHSP Grant Watson tossed five innings of shutout ball and combined with RHP Julio Benitez to hurl a five-hitter, Nathaniel Javier smacked two doubles and drove-in a run, and Jesus Tona and Jean Angomas each singled twice, scored a run, and collected an RBI, leading the Giants "orange" squad to a 7-1 victory over the Cubs in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Monday morning on Field #2 (AKA "Jim Davenport Field") at Indian School Park in Scottsdale, AZ.

In EXST Cubs roster news, OF Zach Davis (Cubs 2016 32nd round draft pick - Texas Tech) has been moved-up to South Bend. Davis was a RH-hitter only prior to this season, but he began switch-hitting at Minor League Camp in March to take advantage of his blazing speed. It hasn't been easy for the 22-year old Houston native, but he has shown some improvement hitting LH over the course of the past week, and it will be interesting to see if he can handle the better pitching he will see in the Midwest League (he only hit .120 in Cactus League EXST games). Getting on base more often also might help him steal a few bases (he didn't attempt to steal any at EXST), since bunting, taking walks, and running the bases is what he does best.

Zach Davis Cactus League EXST game stats:

Az Phil, How's Jonathan Sierra doing? Does he loom like Griffey, JR? That's the comp I've read. How's his defense?

CHILDERB3: Jonathan Sierra has been comped to a young Daryl Strawberry, and you can see why when he takes BP or runs the bases or tracks fly balls or makes throws from the outfield. No question he is a "toolsy" player with plus-HR power (at least in BP), above-average speed for a big man, a good eye at the plate, and a plus-arm that can play in RF. But he also is VERY raw.

Sierra struggles to make contact and show his HR power in games, and the Cubs have spent much of the past year trying to re-work his approach at the plate and get him to use his power and turn on the ball more instead of trying to arm-bar everything to the opposite field. He has shown improvement this year, but he still has a long way to go (he has a 33% K-rate in Cactus League EXST games, but with that high K-rate he hasn't hit any HR and only has two XBH in 51 PA).

Jonathan Sierra Cactus League EXST game stats:
15 GAMES (51 PA)
182/275/227
2 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 4 RBI, 4 RUNS, 6 BB, 17 K, 2 SB (0 CS), 1 PO

Thanks

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

  • crunch (view)

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

  • crunch (view)

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.

  • crunch (view)

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.

  • crunch (view)

he's hugging canario in the dugout cuz morel will shrivel up and die if he doesn't hug at least a dozen people a day.
