Game Preview: White Sux (26-33) vs. Cubs (27-33)

The Cubs and White Sox square off for the first time to try and win the BP Crosstown Cup. Each member of the winning team gets an oily bird delivered to their doorstep.

The lineup for the Cubs from Muskat over twitter:  rf fuke, 2b riot, 1b lee, cf byrd,
lf sori, 3b tracy, c hill, ss castro, p wells

And the White Sox lineup: Pierre lf, Ramirez ss, Rios cf, Konerko 1b, Jones
rf, AJ c, Beckham 2b, Nix 3b, (Peavy)

According to a caller on WSCR, Randy Wells was out partying with Ryan Dempster and the Blackhawks into the wee hours of the morning. Might as well just warm up Gorzelanny along with Wells to start the game.

Last, but not least, Mordecai Hill has these flattering words to say about your 2010 Cubs.

"It was a perfect situation for the Brewers," Hill said. "They had a guy up there at the plate [in Counsell] who takes a lot of pride in what he does and he practices those situations, so when it does come up, he gets the bunt down to the right side of the field. They have the perfect guy on first base [in Gomez], who is one of the fastest guys in the league, and they had one of the worst fundamental teams on the field, so it was a perfect situation for them."

eh, Go Cubs?

Comments

Maybe Wells has a new pre-game routine. Look at all the money Farnsworth has made in his career, sets the right example for the young pitchers. Wells just needs a tighter pair of pants now.

I'm also glad BP is sponsoring the Crosstown Cup, since "disaster" and "negligence" are terms that would fit well with the Cubs these days.

"And Steve Stone? He's got enough problems doing what he does with the White Sox. What job has he had in baseball besides talking on television or radi. What has he done?/blockquote>

"Why isn't he a farm director and bring some kids around? Why isn't he a general manager, and put the uniform on and been a pitching coach? Why hasn't he been a field manager. There's 30 teams out there that could use a guy's expertise like that. I'm tired of some of these guys, I really am. Now that's it. Let's go to baseball."

"I've seen more baseball players than Lou has. I just haven't managed them."

thank you steve stone.

yeah, well steve...your mom wears combat boots.

I guess he does the WGN games for free.

clubhousecacner.com ...neat

there's an entire cottage industry springing up over the past few years of how fans can more easily get angry at athletes.

...complete with self-righteous ranting, i mean commentary.

YO, FUCK THIS SPORTS THING BECAUSE WHEN I WAS IN 8th GRADE I ALREADY KNEW BETTER THAN TO DO THIS STUPID FUCKING SHIT. TO HELL WITH THESE FUCKED UP ASSHOLES. THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO MAKE A BASEBALL GAME. IT IS MY OPINION THAT MY OPINION KICKS ASS.

Well the world cup will last a few weeks, and then there's hopefully a LeBron signing to get excited about, we should be to NFL Preseason by then, right?

Lou, it's June. Fukedome swoons in June. Do you really want this leading off?

KF career: .225 .330 .332
KF ..2010: .227 .261 .318

How about sitting Kosuke down til July when his hitting coach comes back and straightens out his swing?

If Lou sat down every guy who was cold for a week we'd be playing three players.

is colvin hurt?

I'm pretty sure I heard Lou saying something about Tyler Colvin being a "pretty boy" and having "a vagina" during the pregame. I'm not sure. He may have said that he smells bad and is "a douche" too. I think he high-fived Soriano afterward.

Is this totally like Dusty's last year managing?

two of the cubs' latest gaffes [botched rundown; runner scoring from 1st on a bunt]are garden variety little league...

Why has the game been delayed? Stanley Cup?

early morning rain or something, should be starting in 10-20 minutes

there was no rain. i was there, and we sat there looking at a dry field waiting for the game to start.

damn liberal media.

So, when Lou says something like--Unfortunately I have 5 major league outfielders on the roster, so I can't get Colvin in as much as he deserves because others need to play too--is that a message to the GM to trade from the teams strength in order to address a need either at the major league level or in the minors, or is that Lou just throwing up his hands and saying don't blame me?

I mean, should we expect Nady to be traded soon so that Lou only has 4 major league outfielders? Or expect to see Colvin traded soon? Or is Lou saying that we all just have to live with it until the situation somehow resolves itself?

I'm just curious what these angry rants at the press signify.

To answer your question, this is what Lou is thinking:

fart

go ask the players... =p

Look, we have five good outfielders, here - what am I going to do? Soriano has to play, even if he's batting .225 over half the season, you got to play him. Then there's Fukudome - who when I don't put on the lineup card, which he can't read because the first names are the last names anyway, he just jogs out to right field when the game starts. Byrd is leading the league in hitting, and does needless dives better than Andy Van Slyke ever did, and Nady is a proven vet who, I think, charged the beach at Normandy. How can I take him out of the lineup now that he can overthrow third with the best of them? Colvin is the only guy who does what I tell him to do, so he sits out most nights. What else can I do?

i think it means he has 5 good outfielders and 3 OF spots, someone has to sit.

of course it should be fuku right now.

A Soriano Byrd Colvin outfield with Nady at 1st would probably be our best offensive combination right now. Lee still isn't hitting, in case anyone's forgotten.

I've counted out winning at this point, though. I just want to see Colvin play because he's the guy I see providing the best value in the future, especially if the Cubs want to be more strategic with their payroll.

Fukudome would have to be the guy to sit. (And I hope that the Cubs are discussing Fukudome, Byrd, and Lee with other teams.)

watching the cubs @wrigley with hawk/stone calling the game.

strangely, that just isn't getting old for me.

and it shouldn't.

Randy Wells's new mustache is a sure sign that he's headed down a bad road.

so it his top of 1st.

Iowa is calling Randy...

I wonder if Gorzelanny is the one that leaked Wells was out all night?

At least he got two outs this time, unlike the STL start.

Who is Gorzelanny?

my bad...sloth

That's better.

Or Cashner.

-edit- don't feel like getting into it

long story short...adjusted wOBA on college metal bat baseball = bwhaha. it's not the main gist of the article, though.

I haven't even read it - just remember the discussion about JC players and thought some people may find it interesting.

oh, it's a good article...there's just a blurb at the end about adjusted wOBA on a metal bat college baseball player...as if it matters.

it's like trying to justify how pretending how someone hits inside pitching in metal bat baseball is even justifiable.

Randy Wells had another adventurous first inning, after the Cubs denied a WSCR-AM rumor that their starter had been out until 3 a.m celebrating with the Hawks at The Underground night club.

"He was in bed by 9:30," said a Cubs spokesman.

""He was in bed by 9:30," said a Cubs spokesman."

9:30 am?

...but then he had to get up and go home.

From Baseball America's Prospect Hot Sheet (for this past week)

8. Brett Jackson, OF Cubs

Team: high Class A Daytona (Florida State)
Age: 21
Why He's Here: .333/.429/.567 (10-for-30), 1 HR, 2 2B, 1 3B, 10 RBIs, 10 R, 5 BB, 6 SO, 4-for-5 SB
The Scoop: Jackson's raw power has yet to show through in the heavy air of the Florida State League. The Cubs' 2009 first-round pick out of California has just three home runs, including his grand slam on Wednesday against Brevard County, but he's otherwise been holding his own. Jackson, who's been Daytona's leadoff hitter all year, has had issues making contact (54 strikeouts in 214 at-bats), but that was a known problem for him, and he's been patient enough to already have drawn 39 walks, the most by any FSL hitter. Jackson's biggest obstacle so far might be his home park, where he's hitting just .238/.370/.343 in 105 at-bats compared to .321/.426/.486 in 109 road at-bats.

10. Chris Archer, LHP Cubs ....

http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospect...

I don't know about you guys, but I'm just getting this feeling that this just isn't going to be the Cubs year.

this just isn't going to be the Cubs year century

again?

damn.

You seeing something I'm not?

On another note, I just read this headline on Rotoworld: "A-Rod has stiff groin, will see doctor Friday".

Doctor's prescription: "Stop checking yourself out in the mirror".

2nd bad century in a row.

Keep up, Mauer.

I understood...I'm just saying that thus far I'm not seeing anything to lead me to believe that this century will be better than the last one.

fart.

touche

The last century also started out rough, as the Cubs finished 6th, 6th, and 5th from 1900-1902, topping out at 68 wins. But after finishing a solid 3rd (82-56) in 1903, the Cubs then reeled off back-to-back 90+ win seasons. Then from 1906-1910, they were in the World Series 4 of 5 years going 2-2, and the only year they missed the World Series they had 104 wins and a .680 winning percentage.

So yeah, if that's how a bad century looks 10 years in, there is nothing about our view from 2010 that suggests this one will be better, or even (cringe) as good.

The Cubs are sort of the Bizarro world's Tampa Bay Rays

something's gotta give...

meh

piniella has nervous breakdown, sandberg brought in as 'interim' to plug the fan leak @ wrigley & then we'll see...

  • Giants scare me. I think you're wrong about Bumgarner, he would pitch on short rest for Game 2 and then full rest for Game 5. Cueto would go Game 1, then short rest in game 4. Add in some really tough outs in that lineup and I want nothing to do with them. With that rotation they can easily steal a series.

Cards are a tough matchup. The rivalry evens out their comparable lack of talent. And like someone said, they love HRs, which is how to beat the Cubs. The upside is that I would feel really good about Lester twice against STL.

  • Right now, I'd like to see the Mets first, Giants 2nd.

I believe that since most of the team from last years' NLCS is on the squad this year, they will really amp their game up even more to kick their ass in payback for 2015.

The Giants just do not have the depth in years past, and I think all things equal - and at Wrigley - they could handle them.

I do not want to see the Cards, period. Or their fans, media, or Joe Buck.

  • I don't want to play Braves in the first round. Any friggin team in the league can win 3 of 5..I hate the first round. Furthermore, I wanted to play the Marlins in 2003 and the Mets over Dodgers last year.

With that said in reverse order:
    3. Cardinals: It will be devastating to lose in the first round, but even worse to their main rival. It is increased incentive for the Cardinals, especially after last year. Cards would have nothing to lose, Cubs have everything to lose.

    2. Giants: Rotation in the playoffs scare me a bit, but what a lousy team.

    blockhead25 20 hours 1 min ago view
  • 1. Mets--because of the losses in the rotation
    2. Giants--because they're not the team they were BUT they maybe have bullshit even-year magic?
    3. Cardinals--because rivalry and not making the playoffs hurts them more than losing in the NLDS plus getting eliminated by them in the playoffs would make for horrible sports commentary next throughout next season.

CLE/DET rained out last night already, possible rain-outs in New York (vs. Baltimore), Boston(vs. Toronto) and Philly(vs. Mets) this weekend too.

Not only games involving playoff spots that would need to be played, but any that involve home field advantage.

  • any opponent preference for NLDS?

Mets are down to 1 great pitcher instead of 4. Syndegaard may pitch Sunday which means if Mets win the WC game, he'd be set up for Game 1. There's a chance they clinch a spot by Sunday so he'd pitch the WC and then we'd probably get Colon for Game 1. They've certainly had the hottest bats over the last week and month out of the WC options.
