Giants Edge Cubs at Indian School Park

Jeremy Sy belted an RBI triple and a single and Nick Noonan singled, doubled and scored a run, as the Giants edged the Cubs 3-2 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action this morning at Indian School Park Field #2 in Scottsdale, AZ.
The Cubs were held hitless by Giants pitchers through the first five innings, before breaking through with two runs in the top of the 6th.

Ricardo Marcano led off the inning with a line-drive single through the box, and advanced to 3rd base on a two-base throwing error on a pick-off attempt at 1st base. Marcano later scored on a 4-3 GO. Then Rashad Crawford walked with two outs, stole 2nd base, and scored on an Alberto Mineo line-drive double into the RF corner.

19-year old 6-7 Dominican RHP Jeferson Mejia made his U. S. game debut today (he was at Instructs last fall but didn't pitch in any games), and he struggled with his control over his 1.2 IP stint (40 pitches - only 17 strikes). He allowed two runs on two hits (both singles), three walks and a WP, and was unable to complete his second inning of work, but he also struck out three (all three swinging).

Javier Baez rolled his ankle last Friday... "I thought it was broken," Baez said...Baez suffered the injury at Memphis while fielding ground balls during batting practice. "I jumped a little bit to throw the ball and when I landed, it was kind of like a hole or something (there)," Baez said. The 21-year-old said after rolling the ankle, he braced for the worst. "I thought I was done," he said...Despite being eligible to come off the disabled list this Friday, Pevey said Baez could be out five to seven days...Baez had been dealing with back issues before the team went to Memphis, but he said Tuesday those have dissipated..."It's great," Baez said. He added that he expects big things upon his return. "I'll be more patient (at the plate) when I come back," Baez said. http://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/sports/baseball/iowa-cubs/2014/0…

"I'll be more patient (at the plate) when I come back," Baez said. bwhahahahahaha. oh man. wow. hahaha. phew...wow. okay dude. i wonder how much of that back pain is from his hacks... he actually has a good number of swings where his momentum takes his back foot off the ground (and still manages to put the ball over a fence).

Mick Gillispie‏@BroadcasterMick Jake Arrieta very good in his 3rd rehab assignment. 5.2Ip 1r 3h BB 2K 82p 52k I heard he's going to get one more rehad start. But that may still be up in the air some.

Guy on ESPN's chat with Jesse Rogers today asked "Is there any hops of the Cubs resigning Shark...what's a fair deal, 6 years $85 million?" Oof....please no

Edwin Jackson has been a MLB starting pitcher, however mediocre, for 268 starts. Samardzija has 69 starts. Jackson had put together a few solid seasons, and managed to win some games...Samardzija bailed on last seasons because the Cubs were out of it and had a 5.30 ERA in July-Oct. Samardzija has more ability, not so much results yet...over a full season.

sanchez (PIT) obviously blocks the plate...CIN uses a challenge on an out call...call is upheld...CIN loses a challenge as well as not getting the call. the mess of challenge replay review + "new catcher rules" continues.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be savored...unedited. 40 years, wow.
