TCR Predictions

Feel free to add your own in the comments, as you'll see we're an optimistic if not biased bunch, except Cubnut who was obviously traumatized over yesterday's fiasco. Cubnut, You really should have picked the Cubs to win the first series. Even if you don't pick them to the World Series, you should have still picked them to beat the Snakes. For nothing else, the moral on this board. To you sir, I say, BOOOOOOO!

Reverse karma betting pool at my workplace: I'm glumly expecting Az in a sweep. As punishment for my negativity, my co-workers are vying for the most extreme form of humiliation for me, should Cubs win WS. Best one yet: shave my head, get a henna tattoo of the Cubs logo. Feel free to suggest others.

And will there be an "announced start time" for the chat room?

I was looking for the D'backs playoff roster and found this interesting story: http://www.azcentral.com/sports/diamondbacks/articles/1002mr-cubs1003-C… They are going to have a free viewing party tonight and tomorrow at Hohokam Park to show the game on the new 30-foot scoreboard there. No alcohol allowed...but I bet that sure would be a fun time. I also found out some interesting trivia: What are the two currently-active Diamondbacks that have the most career hits against Zambrano? (the two players are tied)

Of 20 "experts" at ESPN, 16 picked the Cubs to beat the D'backs. Only Jayson Stark picked them to go all the way. Of 10 "experts" at CNN.SI, 5 picked the Cubs to beat the D'backs. I did not see them picking beyond the 1st round.

The only prediction I'll make is that if the Cubs do have an edge, it's because of three names that roll trippingly off the tongue: Hill, Lilly and Lou. A guy who scares me is Juan Cruz. Now there's a different kind of ex-Cub factor.

NL PHI col (4) CHN ari (4) PHI chn (6) AL CLE nyy (4) BOS laa (3) CLE bos (7) CLE phi (5)

How can a writer for a Cubs blog (named Cubnut no less) not pick the Cubs to at least win the first series? I mean, it's not like there's money riding on these predictions. Talk about a buzzkill.

Cubs fans are notoriously pessimistic. Also, if the excercise was to predict correctly who would win each series perhaps you might want to pick against the cubs as they have not won in 99 years it's a good bet that they won't again. Vegas is doing that.

God bless you guys. The butterflies didn't emerge for me until I started reading these predictions. Now I can't stop fidgeting.

Mine were pure homerism, I won't lie. I think the Rockies would give us fits to be honest.

Cubnut, you d--che! Is that word allowed? I chose these before looking at anyone else's...remember that when they all turn out exactly right: CHI over ARZ (4) COL over PHI (5) CLE over NYY (5) BOS over ANA (3) -------------------------- CHI over COL (7) BOS over CLE (6) -------------------------- CHI over BOS (6) (I changed the last one at the last moment...I just couldn't do it.)

Same here Brick, although your photo of the marquee (not marquis) also gave me goosebumps a few days ago.

Gents-- I'll admit it: I'm a serial pessimist who hasn't gotten over 2003 yet. I think the Cubs are clearly better than the Diamondbacks, but I'm worried about Carlos vs. Webb tonight and I'm very worried about having to beat a lefty (Davis) tomorrow night. That's where the buzz-killing prediction comes from. Re; #23... The Joe, you misspelled it. It would be d-uche. Go Cubs!

Thanks O. Julius - and everyone else who liked the photo. I saw that Ruz picked it up for his site too, which was awesome. I'm in Cincy tonight of all places (on business). I'll be up late in my hotel room and useless for my meeting tomorrow. (Let's see, where can I go where the game starts even later?)

Just so you guys know, the profanity filter applies to only MVN writers, not MVN readers. MVN readers can swear to their heart's content ... it's not right for us to dictate to the readers what they can and can't do..

Mike & Mike (ESPN) mentioned this morning that one of the Vegas sportsbooks has the Yanks as favorite to win it all, followed by the Red Sox. I believe the Cubs and Indians were tied as fourth favorites.

Sorry, I thought I'd put d--che. Guess not. Still stands. My reasoning... If I'm wrong, then, well, I don't really care if my predictions come true or not.

from the Jayson Stark article... If it means anything, three of the previous four nonstrike-year playoff teams to have a negative run differential got swept in the first round. The fourth (the '87 Twins) did win the World Series -- but did it behind two dominating starters (Frank Viola and Bert Blyleven). We can't find a Bert Blyleven on this team. How about you?

...oh I guess I did. Apparently this blog thingy consolidates two hyphens into one. That sucks. Those dirty [censored], [censored]ity, mother[censored]ing [censored] [censored] [censored], Johann's mom [censored], [censored] with a midget and a garden rake right in the [censored].

Cubnut: "Mike & Mike (ESPN) mentioned this morning that one of the Vegas sportsbooks has the Yanks as favorite to win it all, followed by the Red Sox. I believe the Cubs and Indians were tied as fourth favorites." One of the online website I use has these odds: NEW YORK Y 8-3 BOSTON 3-1 CLEVELAND 13-2 PHILADELPHIA 7-1 CHICAGO C 7-1 LOS ANGELES A 15-2 ARIZONA 8-1 COLORADO 11-1

...anyway, the 'ou' in douche is a diphthong, which essentially turns it into one vowel and therefore (I believe) two hyphens are appropriate. I sure hope the censoring thing doesn't wear out anytime soon, cause I find it funny. Though, considering it is TCR where jokes never die, I should be safe for a while.

dirty sounding clean words In that case, why censor "douche"? You can't get much cleaner than that...

No problem, we all get a little discombobulated sometimes. Just be more careful before spurting out such ejaculations.

Good point, Wild Thing, that's why I originally asked if it was appropriate. Jon Stewart says douchebag, so it must be ok. Then again, he also says d-ck, so who knows?

dipthong- douche- pulling boners. Guys, save it for parachat. C'mon, might need the comic relief later

Hi Johann's mom! Sorry Dave...you're right. Good thing I'm not in politics, because that sort of talk could get me impeached.

I don't think you got what Wild Thing was trying to say... see, douche = device used to introduce a stream of water into the body (usually vagina) for medical or hygienic reasons, thus the "can't get much cleaner than that" comment.

woo, got 2 tickets for the Angels 2nd ALCS game if their so lucky. Angelfan wife is happy....

Thanks Carlos, I DID get it though. Most doctors do not recommend douching (perhaps our expert can shed some light on the issue) because it can lead to bacterial vaginosis. Wikipedia defines it thus: "The most common symptom of BV is an abnormal vaginal discharge (especially after sex) with an unpleasant fishy smell."

But seriously, Rob...how can you let your wife be an Angels fan? I told mine she's not allowed to be a Mariners fan or to ever wear Mariners gear.

I was 0 for 7 in my predictions last year, so I won't dare make a prediction about the Cubs this year. Phils over Rockies Bos over Angels Yanks over Indians Bos over Yanks

Are the other playoff games broadcast on the radio anywhere in Chicago? Don't have a tv at work.

they're in separate leagues, there's little conflict of interest. Although she's so use to going to the playoffs now and stuff it's really annoying to be honest. No harm no foul except when we play each other. World Series could be interesting. She still needs to payup on a bet when the Cubs took 2 of 3 a couple years back in Anaheim. And she looks hot in a baseball jersey so what's there to complain about?

I guess if she's always been a fan, there's not much you can do about it. When we moved to Seattle, mine said to me "so is it ok for me to be a Mariners fan too, since they're in a different league?" Bless her heart for knowing they were in a different league, at least.

I converted mine from Tigers----->Cubs. It wasnt very difficult considering the TIgers performance in the early 2000s.

nah, she could care less about baseball until 2002 other than accompanying me to Cubs games. The Angels run that year and me landing Game 7 tickets pushed her over the edge. But we got kids and all, they could use a home team to root for that's not the Dodgers. They'll be Cubs fan at heart though.

Well that's what I was afraid of. I didn't want her harmless Mariners interest to influence our daughter. It's harder to raise a Cubfan away from Chicago area, so only Cubs allowed.

No way the Cubs lose the first round. Everyone knows that to follow up on their last disaster movie, the sequel has to be even more spectacularly gory. So the Cubs actually make it to the World Series, win the first three games and then blowing a ninth-inning two-out lead in game 4, 5, AND 6. Take a huge lead in Game 7 only to have their opponents chip away bit by bit, tie, and then oh, Dempster blows it in the 12th. AND THERE'S PANDAMONIUM IN THE STREETS OF CLEVELAND.

good work Mao Zedong, you've successfully sheltered her from harmless cultural influences. Be proud Dad, be very proud.

Well, it's not a success, yet...but here's hoping. When she reaches the age of reason, she can make her own choices. What I want to shield her from is peer pressure and to create as much Cub influence in the meantime to help influence her decision. Isn't that what we do with religion? How many Hindu temples have your children visited, Rob?

don't know what you're talking about Joe, Sept was synagogues, Oct for temples, Nov for Lutheran churches and December back to the Catholic church.

Wow. The Rockies are already kicking ass. This is a MUST WIN game for the Phils--their only good pitcher at home...

"Wednesday's Cubs-Diamondbacks opener features crew chief Ed Montague behind the plate, with the 32-year-veteran making his seventh Division Series appearance and working his 20th postseason assignment overall. Sam Holbrook, Greg Gibson, Mike Everitt, Mike Reilly and Mark Carlson complete Montague's crew, with Carlson making his Division Series debut." http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071002&content_id=2246188&vke…

I became a fan in 2002? Shame on you Rob! I distinctly remember taking you to a game back in 99 when we were only dating, Pre-Scioscia era and the red/white uniforms. Good luck with me paying up on that bet now too...lucky you said I looked good in a jersey. Speaking of jerseys, how good are you feeling about the one you are currently sporting, which number is it? #22? Too bad. Ignore Rob, he's just bitter the Angels won the Series and we go to the playoffs every year while the Cubs have to wait every 5 to 99 years for anything good to happen. Good luck fellas. Even though I am a TRUE Angels fan, I'm still rooting for ya. Unless that is we meet up for the final series. Than all bets are off. Our twins will have a well rounded upbringing. Rooting for the cubs will teach them loyalty, discipline, and sacrifice, and rooting for the Angels will keep them from...well getting their little hearts broken. We will save that for another 16yrs at least.

I'm guessing Angelfan Wife will be treated a bit differently than most other fans of other teams when they visit this site? (Chad, I'm looking at you...)

I’m guessing Angelfan Wife will be treated a bit differently than most other fans of other teams when they visit this site? Damn straight.

I too think that we're way too optimistic and that scares me. Oh well, a stirring second half effort will do that I guess. I hope I'm wrong here. NLDS Cubs over D'Backs in 5 Phillies over Rockies in 4 ALDS Indians over Yankees in 5 Angels over Red Sox in 5 NLCS Phillies over Cubs in 6 ALCS Indians over Angels in 7 WS Indians over Phillies in 6

"It’s harder to raise a Cubfan away from Chicago area, so only Cubs allowed." In my experience i have found that most kids like the team that their dad (or mom - whomever is the bigger baseball fan) likes. no matter where they grew up.

I swear to God. I don't know what it is with you guys. I have a problem with Jessica as her posts are annoying and know it all. She acts like being the holder of all things Greg Maddux means anything. And she comes off like the obnoxious New Yorker. Next, I have a problem with Just A Girl. A girl who doesn't like to be disrespected for being a female fan all the while 100% attention to the fact that she is a girl. You know what a name like that means? It means don't treat me like one of the boys. Angelfan Wife, I assume, picked that name as it is the what her husband calls her here and a name by which she would be recognized. There is no problem with that. Not to mention she didn't come here to try to edjumacate (sic) us but rather to clarify some of the facts that were told about her here. Totally legit. Lastly, I would have respect for anyone of you're wives, girlfriends or mothers. However, in the case of Johann's mother, she may not get that same respect from dave. And leave Wriggles out of this.

I actually will stand by my prediction that the Cubs win the world series, too. Maybe not in the way described, but I like how our team stacks up. And I agree, Juan Cruz is going to be a dangerous ex-Cub in this series.

This just in: Lou decides to do a Howard Ehmke on Arizona's ass and start Marquis in Game 1. Except I'm sure Lou never heard of ol' Howard.

Tony Clark and Chris Young always seem to kill us too. I hope we can keep them quiet.

Chad: I was merely referring to what generally happens to fans of other teams who come by to talk shit about the Cubs. Not that that's what Angelfan Wife was doing, but ya know, it was a joke. And don't get me wrong, I love me some fire-and-brimstone shitstorms from Chad when guys like Josh Martin stop by for a chat.

well, sorry, i took that wrong. I get called a lot of things here and only one bothers me. Misogynist. I am not. But maybe I was just being too sensitive.

I don't know, Chad. You have said the women can't be sports fans. That they don't know anything about sports. You've also said that you don't think that Linda Cohn is any good. For this you are banished to Misogyndom. Or maybe the Isle of Lesbos. Your pick.

If Cleveland, Anaheim, Arizona and Colorado all make it to the LCS, would they bother showing it on TV?

"For this you are banished to Misogyndom." See this is the problem today. You can't say anything critical about a group with out immediately being branded a hater. I am pretty sure your post is tongue-in-cheek but the sentiment is there.

Anyone surprised by Manny picking against the Cubs? Anyone else remember back in 04 when Manny often bitched at everyone else for being pessimistic if they didn't drink the Dusty kool-aid?

TBS HD apparently just went live in Los Angeles on Time Warner. Happy, happy, joy, joy

#40: dirty sounding clean words This thread is all cocked up. I can't wait until Soriano, DLee, and ARam take my mind off it with some thrilling dongs! I hope they take Webb deep!

Cubs over Arizona in 5 Rockies over Phils in 4 Cubs over Rockies in 6 NYY over Indians in 4 LAAACA over Boston in 5 LAAACA over NYY in 5 Cubs over LAAACA in 6!

Husbands and Wives in my pants. Cubs in 3. Cubs in 4. Cubs in 4. That is all. Oh, and, Chasing October in my pants.

well, I'll take the Cubs to win all naturally. Right now though, if I were a betting man, I'd take Rockies to win it all. They are certainly sitting as the team with the most momentum and prove it in game one. They simply scare me right now.

"They are certainly sitting as the team with the most momentum and prove it in game one. " Momentum is only one asshole fan away from turning around 180 degrees.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be heard...unedited. 40 years, wow.

Richard Lovelady one walk & 20 K, 22 hits but no HR, high ERA, and two-to-one GB to FB in 12.1 IP, so I would guess that's why he got the call. Sort of the exact opposite of Luke Little.

Definitely surprised about Dick Lovelady. He has a phenomenal name but that’s probably the best thing he’s got. I was kinda hoping for Wieck even though he’s apparently still tossing 86 as his heater

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.
